The Boston Red Sox re-signed free agent first baseman Mitch Moreland to a two-year contract through the 2019 season, the team announced Monday.Moreland's deal will reportedly pay him $13 million over two seasons with up to $1 million more in incentives, WEEI.com reports."(Re-signing with the Red Sox) will make Christmas a little better," Moreland told reporters on Monday."I was hoping (to return). I loved playing here, loved the guys -- everything about it. Looking forward to being back and taking care of some unfinished business."Moreland revealed after news broke of his re-signing that he underwent a scope on one of his knees to clean up a small meniscus tear, but that he is fully recovered now.Moreland batted .246 with 22 homers and 79 RBIs while playing in a career-high 149 games last season. The 32-year-old also set personal bests in at-bats (508), runs scored (73), doubles (34) and walks (57) in his first season with the Red Sox.A Gold Glove winner in 2016, Moreland answered that with a .995 fielding percentage last season."We've stayed in contact with Mitch's rep all offseason," Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told the Boston Globe. "We liked the job that Mitch did for us last year."The Red Sox had been linked to Kansas City Royals free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, among other prominent free agents, before bringing back Moreland.Moreland owns a .252 batting average with 132 homers and 433 RBIs in 922 career contests with the Texas Rangers and Red Sox. He helped the Rangers reach the World Series in 2010 by going 16-for-46 in 15 playoff games.
