Mon Jan 30 202314:23Darren O'Day Announces Retirement
Relief pitcher Darren O'Day announced on Monday he's retiring from the league in a tweet. O'Day made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2008 and has appeared in every Major League season since. The 40-year-old made 644 appearances over the years, pitching for Los Angeles, the New York Mets, Texas, Baltimore, Atlanta, and the New York Yankees. He most recently appeared in 28 games for Atlanta in 2022, pitching to a 4.15 ERA and a 4.04 FIP in 21.2 innings of work while logging 26 strikeouts compared to 10 walks. For his career, the 40-year-old owns a 2.59 and a 3.48 FIP in 609-lifetime innings at the Major League level. He struck out 9.41 batters per nine frames while allowing just 2.54 walks per nine innings.

Tue Aug 9 202211:51Darren O'Day's Rehab Moved To Triple-A
The Atlanta Braves moved relief pitcher Darren O'Day's (calf) minor league rehab assignment from High-A Rome to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. O'Day struck out a batter in a scoreless inning of work for Rome last Friday. The 39-year-old right-hander might only need a few more rehab outings before he's activated from the 15-day injured list. O'Day landed on the injured list on July 13 with a left calf strain. Before the injury, he was sporting a 4.15 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and a 26:10 K:BB in 21 2/3 relief innings for the Braves. The veteran side-armer isn't of any real value to fantasy managers.

Tue Nov 30 202115:20Darren O'Day Signs Minor League Deal With Braves
The Atlanta Braves signed right-handed reliever Darren O'Day to a minor league deal on Monday. The 39-year-old side-armer signed a one-year deal with the New York Yankees last winter but pitched in only 10 2/3 innings due to a rotator cuff strain and a season-ending hamstring injury that required surgery. If he's in the majors with the Braves next season, he'll make $1 million. In his 14 big-league seasons, O'Day has a nice 2.53 ERA in 587 1/3 innings pitched. He previously pitched with Atlanta from 2019-20 but pitched only 21 2/3 innings due to injuries, and he hasn't gone over 20 innings pitched in a season since 2017. If O'Day cracks the Opening Day roster, he'll be a relief option against right-handed bats.

RHP Darren O'Day had not allowed a run in 14 career games versus the Astros but that changed Saturday. He came on for RHP Chris Tillman with a 4-3 lead in the sixth, allowed two singles and a three-run pinch-hit homer to 3B Marwin Gonzalez that gave Houston the lead for good, and O'Day (1-3) took the loss. "I thought I had him set up for a pitch there and I didn't execute, so I just made a mistake," O'Day said. "It's really unacceptable for a team that's kind of fighting for every win. I just didn't get the job done."

RHP Darren O'Day has had some control issues at times this season, and that popped up again Friday. He walked one batter to start the 10th, later added an intentional walk before giving up a three-run homer to RF Steven Souza Jr that snapped a 3-3 tie, and the Rays went on to a 6-4 victory. "Darren's done a good job against left-handed hitters really the last couple years," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Just a walk there and then he got a breaking ball up that he doesn't normally throw up."

RHP Darren O'Day was placed on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder before Friday's game. O'Day felt some soreness during his last outing Wednesday against Pittsburgh and manager Buck Showalter is unsure how long he will be out because it is the same soreness O'Day experienced after making his first 15 relief appearances. O'Day is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA this season. "It's something that's been bothering him a little bit the last couple days," Showalter said. "He had good outings, he's been pitching well. It's unfortunate." After Friday's loss, O'Day spoke about the injury and reiterated Showalter's comments by saying: "I think it's pretty similar to what I had earlier in the season. I felt it Tuesday night against the Pirates. Really, there's no explanation for why it happened, but it started hurting me, so Buck was able to stay away from me the past couple nights, but we had to make a decision today and I felt like if I pitched tonight it would probably make it worse and I'd be out for longer so we made the decision."

RHP Darren O'Day received a bit of a break in the seventh inning. The game was tied at 3-3, and O'Day struck out 1B Justin Smoak with the bases loaded. The ball got away from C Welington Castillo, and a run appeared to score, but the pitch hit Smoak and the rules say the play is dead at that point. That strikeout ended the inning.

RHP Darren O'Day earned his first save of the season by getting the game's final out Saturday against the Red Sox. He came in after LHP Donnie Hart got the first two outs in the ninth. RHP Brad Brach, who has been serving as the closer with LHP Zach Britton out, had pitched three nights in a row so manager Buck Showalter tweaked things a bit.

RHP Darren O'Day was reinstated from 15-day disabled list after recovering from a right shoulder rotator cuff strain. O'Day, the Orioles' setup man, pitched for the first time since Aug. 11 against the Rays and allowed a home run to Corey Dickerson on his first pitch. "It was awesome to be back," O'Day said. "Be able to help the guys out. They've been having a heavy workload down there. So to take one inning, it's helpful. Obviously, the day was made even better by the win at the end there. It was a good day."
