Chavez once hit 32 home runs and racked up 96 RBI in High-A ball in 2010, but he's struggled since. Those struggles include a .206/.306/.270 line in 24 games with the Cubs' Double-A affiliate this past season. The 24-year-old will serve as organizational depth.

Chavez showed lots of potential in the lower minors with the Mariners but was unable to continue to hit as he moved up the ladder. He's still just 23, so perhaps the Cubs can coax something out of him.

Chavez was designated for assignment earlier this week but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. The 23-year-old batted just .232 with a .725 OPS in 288 plate appearances this season.

Mon Feb 28 201118:03Mariners prospect Chavez homers in ninth
Johermyn Chavez homered in the top of the ninth Monday as the Mariners and Padres played to a 6-6 tie.
Chavez might prove to be the saving grace of the Brandon Morrow trade for the Mariners. He follwed up at .315/.387/.577 season in A-ball last year with an excellent winter league campaign, and he already has a homer and a double in five at-bats this spring. The 22-year-old will open the season in Double-A.

Mariners outfield prospect Johermyn Chavez is batting .314/.422/.500 over 70 at-bats in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Chavez was acquired last December when the Mariners traded Brandon Morrow to the Blue Jays and has really taken off in the Mariners' farm system. The 21-year-old hit .315/.387/.577 with 32 home runs and 109 runs scored this year in 136 games at the Single-A level and has an excellent outfield throwing arm. He's likely to kick off the 2011 season at Double-A.
