Mariners outfield prospect Greg Halman was stabbed to death in the Netherlands on Monday morning.
Dutch police were called to a home in the port city of Rotterdam and found the 24-year-old ballplayer bleeding from a stab wound. They were unable to resuscitate him. Halman's 22-year-old brother was arrested as a possible suspect and is being questioned by police. There aren't many more details available at this time. Halman, 24, batted .299/.358/.441 with three homers and 15 RBI in 40 games this year for Triple-A Tacoma.

Mariners optioned OF Greg Halman to Triple-A Tacoma.
Halman batted just .230/.256/.345 with two homers and a 32/3 K/BB ratio over 91 plate appearances with the big club. The Mariners haven't announced a corresponding roster move, but it might not be long before we see the Wily Mo Pena or the recently-acquired Trayvon Robinson.

While his teammates combined for 14 hits, Greg Halman went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Wednesday against the A's.
We don't see what Halman is doing in the majors. Today's appearance was his first in a week, and his average is down to .230. He has a 32/3 K/BB ratio in 87 at-bats since his callup.

Sun Jul 3 201100:26Greg Halman goes 2-for-3 for Mariners
Greg Halman had the Mariners' only two hits Saturday in a loss to the Padres.
He doubled and singled. Halman isn't playing much, but he's hit .378 in his limited action, which is pretty stunning given his tendency to swing and miss. The Mariners will eventually free up some at-bats for him or send him back to Triple-A.

Thu Jun 16 201103:24Halman blasts first career home run
Greg Halman launched his first major league home run on Wednesday, helping the Mariners defeat the Angels 3-1.
Halman entered the game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement, and rewarded Mariners manager Jack Zduriencik by contributing with his bat. Halman is hitting .409/.409/.636 in his first 22 at-bats in 2011, and is part of a promising youth movement that could give Seattle much more run production in the second half of the season.

Sun Jun 5 201120:08Halman goes 3-for-4 in 2010 debut
Mariners prospect Greg Halman made his 2011 debut Sunday, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
With Michael Saunders struggling badly, Halman is getting a chance. The powerful righty batted ninth today and almost had as many hits today as he did in nine games late last season (4-of-29). We know he has elite power, but an extreme strikeout rate and poor plate discipline are red flags. Only deep leaguers should test the waters here.

Fri Jun 3 201103:10Mariners call up OF Halman
Mariners recalled outfielder Greg Halman from Triple-A Tacoma.
Michael Saunders needed to go, but hopefully Halman's stay will be a short one. He had played in just five games since returning from a broken wrist, going 6-for-22 with one homer. One of the game's most strikeout-prone players, he appeared completely overmatched in his brief audition last year, going 4-for-29 with no homers and 11 strikeouts. He has big-time power, but he's not a major leaguer right now and the Mariners need to be hunting for a veteran outfielder capable of helping out in at least a part-time role.

Wed Apr 13 201113:57Mariners prospect Halman placed on DL
Mariners prospect Greg Halman went on the Triple-A disabled list with a fractured wrist sustained when he was hit by a pitch.
Hopefully it won't take too much of a toll on his power when he does return. Halman can hit homers with anyone in the minors, but unfortunately, he's also right there with the leaders when it comes to strikeouts.
