Jose Lopez has agreed to a one-year contract with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League.
The deal will pay him $911,000, which is probably double what he would have made state-side. Lopez batted just .246/.270/.356 in 81 games last season, but he does have some power and should do pretty well in Japan.

It was reported over the weekend that the Astros were close to signing Lopez, but that was incorrect. The 29-year-old infielder batted just .246/.270/.356 in 81 games this past season between the Indians and White Sox and owns a .688 career OPS in the big leagues. He'll hope for better luck overseas.

Lopez reportedly said Saturday that he would be flying to Houston soon to take a physical, but apparently that's not the case. MLB.com's Brian McTaggart has also said the Astros are not in "active discussions at this time with free agents." The 29-year-old will continue to look for a job.

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Astros are close to signing free agent infielder Jose Lopez.
Lopez, who is currently playing in the Venezuelan Winter League, said during a press conference Saturday that he's flying to Houston on December 26, and that everything will depend on a physical exam. The 29-year-old hit .246/.270/.356 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 81 games between the Indians and White Sox in 2012.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reported Tuesday night that the two sides were having "serious discussions" about a contract. Lopez, 28, batted just .216 with a .617 OPS over 242 plate appearances in 2011 between the Rockies and Marlins. While he hasn't been a productive player for a couple years now, he could carve out a role as a platoon player during spring training.
