Kotchman signed a minor league contract with the Royals on Friday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

Kotchman hasn't been affiliated with a team since 2013, when he played in six games with the Marlins but missed most of the season with an oblique injury. The veteran will provide organizational depth for the Royals, but it would likely take multiple injuries for him to crack the big league roster.

Kotchman was recalled from his rehab assignment, activated from the disabled list and then cut from the 40-man roster all in one fell swoop. He has been sidelined since early June because of a left oblique strain. It's not clear what the plan is now for the 30-year-old.

The slam came off Jenrry Mejia. It was Kotchman's spring debut after he injured the finger eight days ago. He may be the Marlins' Opening Day first baseman with Logan Morrison still recovering from knee surgery.
