Sun Mar 7 202117:06Felix Hernandez back on the mound, vying for spot with O's
After a year away, Felix Hernández admittedly has some kinks to work out in his pursuit of a big league roster spot. “I feel like real quick to the plate, like I was rushing the ball, I was opening myself too quick," Hernández said after making his debut for the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night. "I’m going to be better at the end of the spring.” It's still a bit weird to think of King Felix in another uniform after the right-hander made 418 starts in 15 seasons for Seattle, winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2010. But his final two seasons with the Mariners were a struggle and he opted out of 2020 because of coronavirus concerns while with Atlanta. This year, the former ace is with the Orioles as a non-roster invite. Hernández made his first spring training start of 2021 against Detroit, pitching two innings. He allowed two runs on one hit and two walks, striking out two. “I thought he did a really nice job. First time he’s pitched in a year," manager Brandon Hyde said. "I thought he did... [More]
Mon Sep 28 202015:28Mariners see development, progress in truncated season
SEATTLE (AP) — Sometime around the midpoint of the truncated 60-game season, Scott Servais noticed an obvious shift in the Seattle Mariners clubhouse. While the focus on development of young players was still there, Servais said it became clear his young team was growing in confidence, and the expectation of just being competitive wasn’t good enough. The Mariners believed they were ready to win. “I do think we were able to accomplish a lot of what we’re looking to do and maybe it’s happening a little bit quicker than we thought,” Servais said. “So that excites me a ton. I know the mindset of our team shifted. It shifted about halfway through this thing. "I really felt there was an everyday focus on winning the ball game. And along the way, we were going to focus on getting better no question about it. But the attitude among our players, our coaching staff, it shifted.” How that shift carries into the 2021 season will be a major determinant in the next stage of the Mariners rebuilding project.... Sun Jul 19 202017:22Boyd honored to be Tigers' starter for opener vs Reds
DETROIT (AP) — Matthew Boyd's status as Detroit's opening night starter is now official. He'd known for a while.Manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed Sunday that Boyd would start the opener, then the 29-year-old left-hander admitted he'd been told about the assignment months ago — before the coronavirus shut down spring training. His family was making plans for the occasion, then had to reconsider.“They were all booking their flights to Cleveland," Boyd said. "Luckily, Delta was able to refund some of those.”Boyd said he was told again he would pitch the opener shortly after the Tigers reconvened for their second training camp. That game not in Cleveland anymore. Detroit is set to begin the abbreviated 2020 season Friday night at Cincinnati. Starting the opener is a big deal for Boyd, even though the usual crowd of fans won't be there.“I know it’s going to look different this year, without getting to share it with the fans in person, but I’m sure it’ll be pretty special on TV with everything...
