Wed Apr 26 202316:21Diamondbacks Officially Release Madison Bumgarner
The Arizona Diamondbacks officially released left-hander Madison Bumgarner on Wednesday. Any MLB team can now sign him for the league minimum of $720,000. Bumgarner's time in the desert came to an end last week when Arizona designated him for assignment after his rough start to the 2023 campaign. It was most definitely a tough decision for the D-backs, as they still owe him almost $36 million guaranteed. The four-time All-Star had a 10.26 ERA (8.13 FIP), 2.40 WHIP, 15 walks and 10 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings over four starts to begin the year before being cut. In his four seasons in Arizona, MadBum struggled to a 5.23 ERA (5.18 FIP), 1.38 WHIP and 17.4 percent strikeout rate in 69 starts. He could latch on with another team, but the veteran southpaw's illustrious career is nearing an end.

Thu Apr 20 202312:20Diamondbacks Designate Madison Bumgarner For Assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks designated left-hander Madison Bumgarner for assignment on Thursday after four ugly starts to open the 2023 campaign, according to sources. Bumgarner has a 10.26 ERA in his four starts this year and entered the season still owed $37 million on his five-year, $85 million deal that he signed before the 2020 season. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw just hasn't had it early on this year, as he's allowed 20 runs (19 earned) on 25 hits (four home runs surrendered) while walking 15 and striking out 10 in 16 2/3 innings over his four starts. This will effectively end his time with Arizona, and he'll be on the open market shortly after passing through waivers. A change of scenery could help MadBum, but fantasy managers shouldn't bet on it.

Wed Apr 19 202318:34Madison Bumgarner Could Miss Next Start
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner is off to a horrendous beginning to the season. The left-hander was torched for seven runs over three innings of work during Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. He holds a 10.26 ERA, 2.40 WHIP and 10/15 K/BB ratio across four starts this season. Following Wednesday's game, manager Torey Lovullo said he isn't committing to Bumgarner making his next start. He continued by saying that he'll need to talk it over before making a decision. The 33-year-old might find his way into the bullpen if things don't start getting better for him on the mound.

Fri Apr 14 202322:06Madison Bumgarner Takes The Loss Versus Miami
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner had another ugly performance on Friday in the loss to the Miami Marlins. The lefty was on the hill for the third time this season. However, things weren't any different, with Bumgarner allowing nine hits and five earned runs through five innings. He now sits on a rough 0-2 record and a miserable 7.90 ERA (13 2/3 innings). That said, Bumgarner has likely found his way off fantasy rosters, which will remain the trend until he turns things around.

Thu Apr 6 202322:51Madison Bumgarner Expects To Make Next Start
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner (arm) said his left arm feels better and he's thrown since returning to Phoenix. He expected to make his next scheduled start on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bumgarner dealt with fatigue in his first start of the year and thinks he just overdid his throwing in the week prior to the start. The 33-year-old allowed five runs on four hits while walking four in four innings against the Dodgers in his season debut last Saturday. He doesn't have any structural damage in his arm, though, so he won't need a trip to the injured list. Fantasy managers should be extremely wary of using MadBum in a rematch with a potent Dodgers lineup.

Tue Apr 4 202312:10Madison Bumgarner's Arm Checks Out Fine
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner (arm) is on track to make his next scheduled start after an MRI exam on his left arm showed no structural damage, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Bumgarner is just dealing with a little fatigue in his arm. He'll throw a typical between-starts bullpen session this week, and barring a setback, he'll start on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 33-year-old southpaw's velocity was down in his first start of the year on Saturday, and he told the team he felt "arm fatigue." MadBum allowed five runs in four innings against LA, and he'll be one to avoid in his second start against the same dangerous lineup this weekend.

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner (arm) is being sent back to Arizona to be evaluated by the team's medical team. He felt arm fatigue during Saturday night's start. Bumgarner walked four in his start and gave up five runs over four innings while striking out two. Bumgarner felt he wouldn't miss his next start, but more will be known after the team looks things over.

Tue Feb 28 202320:54Madison Bumgarner Faces Live Hitters
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was able to face live hitters for the third time on Monday. The veteran southpaw is getting closer to making his Cactus League debut. The Diamondbacks are bringing Bumgarner along slowly to save on some wear-and-tear on his body. The 33-year-old posted a 4.88 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 112/49 K/BB ratio over 158 2/3 innings in 30 starts last season. The hope is that he'll bounce back this season. The expectation is that Bumgarner will take the mound within the next week, so he should be ready to go by Opening Day.

Sun Sep 25 202214:25Madison Bumgarner Will Not Pitch Again This Season
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner will not pitch again this season, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Lovullo told reporters that there is nothing wrong with the veteran southpaw and that he's not injured. Bumgarner is coming off a strong six-inning effort against the Dodgers in his previous start and will end the season on a high note. The D-Backs want to take a look at some of their younger arms before the year is over, so the veteran Bumgarner will end his year with a 4.88 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 112:49 K:BB over 158 2/3 innings on the year.

Wed Aug 24 202219:52Madison Bumgarner To Be Skipped This Weekend
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that left-hander Madison Bumgarner will be skipped his next time through the starting rotation this weekend during the series against the Chicago White Sox. Bumgarner will work with pitching coach Brent Strom to tweak some things and will return during the team's series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which starts next Monday. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw has been getting hit around over his last seven starts dating back to July 15, allowing 30 earned runs on 53 hits (six homers surrendered) while walking 14 and striking out 31 in 41 2/3 innings. He's now 6-13 on the year with a 4.53 ERA (4.64 FIP), a 1.43 WHIP and a 97:43 K:BB in 133 innings over 25 starts. Fantasy managers may want to keep him benched in deeper leagues until he turns things around.

Tue Jun 7 202200:07Madison Bumgarner Gets Hit Around In Monday Loss
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner fell to 2-5 in Monday's 7-0 loss to the Reds. MadBum pitched 5 innings, allowing four runs on eights hits (including a solo home run) and two walks with four strikeouts. The 32-year-old veteran has pitched decently overall on the surface this season, compiling a 3.64 ERA with 41 strikeouts and 21 walks over 12 starts and 59 1/3 innings pitched. However, his Statcast metrics are all mostly in the bottom third of baseball, which does not inspire a ton of confidence. His next matchup will be a tough test at the Phillies, and fantasy managers would be wise to avoid starting him.

Sun Apr 3 202220:24Madison Bumgarner Named Opening Day Starter
The Arizona Diamondbacks have named starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner as the team's Opening Day starter this year. He will go up against a tough San Diego Padres lineup this coming Thursday, April 7. MadBum posted a solid 1.18 WHIP last year, but the rest of his numbers were pretty ugly. He had a 4.67 ERA and averaged just 7.6 K/9. The average velocity on his four-seamer (90.4 mph) was up last year from 2020 (88.4 mph), but it was still well below where it was in his prime. He can remain undrafted in all but the deepest of fantasy leagues.

Sat Sep 4 202106:46Madison Bumgarner Yields Five Runs In No-Decision
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner allowed five earned runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five across six innings during Friday's 6-5 loss to the Seattle Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. The southpaw was hurt by the long ball and surrendered home runs to Mitch Haniger and Jarred Kelenic. The 32-year-old also walked a season-high five batters on Friday. Bumgarner owns a 4.52 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 106 strikeouts across 123 1/3 innings in 2021. The 31-year-old is set for a rematch on the road against the Seattle Mariners. Bumgarner can be used as a streamer in deep-league formats but should temper expectations as the left-hander has now allowed five earned runs in back-to-back starts.

Mon Aug 9 202102:01Madison Bumgarner Tosses Quality Start Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher recorded a quality start despite taking the loss on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings of work against the Padres. Bumgarner has been on a dominant run over his last five starts, going 2-2 with a 1.97 ERA, 0.906 WHIP and 16.2 percent strikeout rate over 32 innings of work while also recording four quality starts in that span. He'll get a rematch with the Padres in his next outing, which managers should consider using him as a streaming option while he's on a hot streak.

Marcus Stroman pitched one-hit ball for eight innings, Dominic Smith launched a grand slam and the New York Mets cruised to a 7-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. Stroman (7-8) gave up a leadoff single to Aristides Aquino in the third inning and little else. He struck out seven and walked one while giving New York’s beleaguered bullpen precious rest going into Thursday’s day off. Jeurys Familia struck out three in a hitless ninth. Luis Guillorme hit his first homer of the season and Jonathan Villar also connected for the NL East leaders. Mets manager Luis Rojas returned to the dugout after serving a two-game suspension for excessive arguing on Sunday.
