Mon Jun 11 201803:07Few certainties in baseball draft, but top picks valuable
Yes, the baseball draft can feel like a bit of a crapshoot, but it does help to be picking near the top. This year's draft took place Monday night, with the Detroit Tigers selecting Auburn right-hander Casey Mize with the top pick . San Francisco followed by picking Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart. It could be a while before either of those players makes an impact in the majors, but if the past two decades are any indication, the top two picks are as likely as anybody to provide major value. From 1998-2017, the 20 players picked No. 1 overall have been worth a total of 313.5 wins above replacement, according to Baseball-Reference.com. That's more value than any other slot in the first round. The 20 players drafted at No. 2 have been worth 261.3 WAR, which is the second-most value. After the top two picks, the draft has been more hit-or-miss. For example, the No. 7 pick (222.4 WAR) has yielded significantly more value than the No. 4 pick (82.1). That's not to say that a team should rather pick... [More]

RHP Jeremy Guthrie was designated for assignment on Sunday, one day after he was called up to make a spot start against the Phillies. It didn't go well for the longtime MLB veteran, who gave up six hits and four walks while getting tagged for 10 runs in just 2/3 of an inning, taking the defeat in a 17-2 loss on his 38th birthday; his ERA stands at 135.00.

Guthrie, who will turn 38 on Saturday, will be pitching for his fifth different MLB team over a career that began in 2004; last year, in 30 games (24 starts) for Kansas City, he went 8-8 with a 5.95 ERA.

RHP Jeremy Guthrie's $10 million mutual option was declined by the Royals on Nov. 4, making Guthrie a free agent. The 36-year-old veteran didn't make the Royals' roster for any round of the postseason. He went 8-8 with a 5.95 ERA in 30 regular-season games (24 starts). He spent three seasons in Kansas City, going 15-12 in 2013 and 13-11 in 2014.

Guthrie gave up nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits and zero walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings Tuesday against the Mariners.
Despite his general ineffectiveness and Tuesday's disastrous outing, Guthrie will stick in the rotation through the end of the season as the Royals look to get Danny Duffy acclimated to the bullpen role he will hold during the postseason. Guthrie's next start comes Sunday at home against the Indians.
Thu Sep 17 201516:35Guthrie will start Tuesday's game against Seattle
Guthrie will start Tuesday's game against Seattle, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Guthrie will rejoin the rotation over the final weeks of the regular season, taking the spot vacated by the struggling Danny Duffy. If the current rotation remains intact, Guthrie is on pace to make three starts before the postseason.
Thu Sep 17 201515:56Guthrie will be moved back into starting rotation
Guthrie will be moved back into the starting rotation, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports.
The Royals moved Guthrie to the bullpen last month after a string of sub-par starts, but with Danny Duffy struggling of late, Guthrie will re-enter the rotation for the final few weeks of the regular season. It's unclear exactly when Guthrie will make his next start, though it will likely be Tuesday when the Royals host the Mariners. Guthrie has not been overly effective out of the pen over the last month, allowing six earned runs on eight hits over 11.1 combined innings of long relief.
Fri Aug 21 201517:23Guthrie moved to bullpen
Guthrie has been moved to the bullpen, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
This has been a long time coming for Guthrie, who's struggled throughout the season to the tune of a 5.65 ERA, with a total of 18 runs allowed in his last four outings. Kris Medlen will slot into the rotation starting Monday, while Guthrie will serve in a multi-inning role out of the bullpen.
Thu Aug 20 201517:12Guthrie could be in danger of losing spot in rotation
Guthrie could be in danger of losing his spot in the rotation, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports.
Manager Ned Yost refused to provide an answer when asked whether Guthrie would remain in the rotation following another lackluster start Wednesday, a possible indication that the Royals could make a change. Guthrie allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings in his last start, and he's allowed at least 10 hits in three of his last five appearances while running his season ERA up to 5.65. Should Yost make the decision to remove Guthrie from the rotation, the most likely candidate to take his spot would be 22-year-old Miguel Almonte, who has spent time at Double-A and Triple-A this season.
Thu Aug 20 201515:12Jeremy Guthrie: Could Lose Rotation Spot
Kansas City Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who has a 5.65 ERA this season, could lose his spot in the rotation after failing to make it out of the fifth inning Wednesday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Guthrie allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Reds on Wednesday. He struck out four in the no-decision.
Considering that Guthrie put 10 men on base and gave up two homers, he should feel tremendously fortunate to have just three runs on his line. Nonetheless, it's just another awful game for the veteran righty, who was coming off his first one-run outing since the start of June. There are precious few fantasy leagues where Guthrie is worth anything but a juicy matchup for opposing hitters.

Guthrie allowed one run on two hits in six innings Thursday against the Angels. He walked three and struck out two in the no-decision.
The Royals' bullpen squandered a nice bounce-back start by Guthrie, who had been dinged for at least 10 hits in each of his past three outings, putting his spot in the rotation in question. The 36-year-old veteran has an unimpressive 5.63 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 62:36 K:BB ratio in 124.2 innings this season.

Guthrie (8-7) tossed 5.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits in Saturday's 7-6 win over the White Sox.
Despite earning the win, Guthrie hasn't tossed a good game in quite some time. He's allowed at least three earned runs in each of his last five starts, and his ERA is flirting with 6.00. He only struck out one batter Saturday, and has just 60 strikeouts on the season in over 118 innings pitched. The veteran righty hasn't halted Kansas City's march towards the top, but he's been a liability as a starter as of late.

Guthrie was hammered for eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits over 5.1 innings in a losing effort Wednesday in Cleveland.
His days in the rotation may be nearing an end, as the addition of Johnny Cueto at the top will give manager Ned Yost a decision to make with the No. 5 spot. If he remains in the fold heading into next week, Guthrie will start against the Tigers on Tuesday before a spin on August 9 against the White Sox, but it's no guarantee at this point.
