Indians acquired OF Aaron Cunningham from the Padres for RHP Cory Burns.
Cunningham, who was acquired from the Athletics in the Kevin Kouzmanoff deal, spent most of the 2011 season with Triple-A Tucson. The former top prospect has a lousy .231/.290/.375 batting line over 392 plate appearances in the big leagues, but bats from the right side and can play all three outfield positions. He could be a useful bench player for the Tribe.

Fri Dec 16 201115:58Report: Indians get Cunningham from Padres
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Indians have acquired outfielder Aaron Cunningham from the Padres in exchange for relief prospect Cory Burns.
Cunningham spent most of the 2011 season at Triple-A and raked there, batting .329/.398/.532 with nine homers over 384 plate appearances. He hit only .178/.257/.367 over 101 plate appearances in his time with the Padres. The 25-year-old should get some playing time against left-handed pitching. Burns was not ranked by Baseball America among the Indians' top-30 prospects coming into the season, but he boasts a 2.02 ERA and 11.5 K/9 rate over 130 minor league games. He finished 2011 at Double-A.

It certainly wasn't because of his play on the field. Cunningham batted .326 with two homers, five doubles and eight RBI over 46 at-bats this spring. He suffered a high calf strain last week, which could be a significant reason why the Padres ultimately decided to carry Cedric Hunter as a reserve outfielder.

Wed Sep 15 201001:38Cunningham leads off, collects three hits
Aaron Cunningham led off for the first time this year and collected three hits and scored twice in a big win for the Padres.
He has actually been walking at a poor rate for a leadoff hitter, but he's been lucky with batted balls and has a little power and speed, so moving to the top of the lineup can only be good news for his fantasy value. He's shown promise in the minor leagues in four different organizations, and this could be a breakout for him finally.

We like what Chris Denorfia has been doing, but he's already pretty banged up and his regression is probably imminent. Cunningham at least provides another option in that regard. The 24-year-old outfielder is batting .312 with one home run and 13 RBI in 77 at-bats with the Padres this season.

Padres recalled OF Aaron Cunningham form Tripe-A Portland.
Cunningham has produced nine hits in 31 at-bats this season for the Pads, but he has also struggled to find regular playing time. Will Venable's injury could change that, and he's worth keeping an eye on in NL-only leagues.
Wed Jun 16 201001:13Padres' Cunningham hits grand slam
Making his first start since being recalled, Aaron Cunningham went 2-for-3 with a grand slam off Toronto's Brett Cecil and a walk Tuesday.
It didn't seem like the Padres would have much use for Cunningham and Chris Denorfia at the start of the season, but both can play a bit and the team might not lose anything with them in the lineup over Kyle Blanks and Tony Gwynn Jr. Cunningham is worth following closely in NL-only leagues, though he may play only against lefties for now.
