Wed Apr 1 201509:58Gwynn reassigned to Nationals' minor league camp Wednesday
Gwynn was reassigned to the Nationals' minor league camp Wednesday, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.
Gwynn put together a productive spring training with a .341/.420/.500 line across 44 at-bats, but the Nationals' decision to acquire a more versatile defensive outfielder in Matt den Dekker likely resulted in Gwynn being cut. The 32-year-old will stick around in the organization in a depth capacity, and could rank among the Nationals' first call-ups if further injuries hit the outfield.

Gwynn is having a big spring so far, hitting .379/.455/.586 in 29 at-bats and playing good defense in center field.
With Denard Span expected to miss significant time due to core muscle surgery, and both Jayson Werth and Nate McLouth potentially beginning the season on the DL due to shoulder issues, the door is potentially open for Gwynn to win a bench spot, and even have some fantasy value if Michael Taylor struggles out of the gate. In deep NL-only leagues, Gwynn could be worth keeping an eye on.
Mon Mar 2 201522:09Gwynn signed minor league contract with Nationals on Monday
Gwynn signed a minor league contract with the Nationals on Monday, the Washington Times reports. The deal includes a spring training invite.
The 32-year-old has played for four major league teams in his eight-year career, most recently appearing in 80 games for the Phillies in 2012. He hit just .152, however, and refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues in October, opting to become a free agent. Due to his speed and defensive capabilities, Gwynn will have a chance to make the Opening Day roster as a bench player, but he'll need to demonstrate that he's made major strides as a hitter.

Gwynn refused his outright assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, instead opting for free agency.
Gwynn is unlikely to land a major league deal in the offseason, but his capable glove and decent speed should allow him to land a minor league contract and an invitation to spring training. The 32-year-old appeared in 80 games for the Phillies last season, slashing .152/.264/.190 over 127 plate appearances.

Gwynn was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday.
Less than a week after being released by the Phillies at the end of July, Gwynn re-upped with the team on a minor league deal and went on to hit .290/.383/.362 with Lehigh Valley in August. His name was included among the team's September callups, and Gwynn will serve as outfield depth over the remainder of the season with John Mayberry shipped to Toronto.

Designated for assignment two weeks ago, and then released a week later, Gwynn posted a .163/.281/.204 slash line over 98 at-bats with the Phillies. It will be a minor surprise if he's back in the majors before September.

Thu Mar 20 201416:29Tony Gwynn Jr. goes 2-for-3
Tony Gwynn Jr. went 2-for-3 with a double and walked against the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Gwynn was already gaining traction as a bench candidate for the Phillies, but in light of Darin Ruf's oblique injury, he now has a pretty good chance of breaking camp with the team. He does make for a better backup center fielder than John Mayberry Jr., except since he and Ben Revere are both left-handed hitters, there's no good way to use them in tandem. Even if he does make the team, Gwynn shouldn't have any fantasy value in NL-only leagues.

Wed Dec 18 201312:20Phillies sign Gwynn to minor league contract
Phillies signed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Gwynn is a career .244/.312/.318 hitter over 1,671 big league plate appearances. Most players of his skill level don't get that amount of MLB playing time, but it pays to be named Tony Gwynn. The younger Gwynn rebounded from year's of offensive strife to slash .300/.393/.384 at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2013, though the Dodgers didn't trust the 31-year-old enough to promote him to the active roster.

Mon Aug 6 201212:34Dodgers designate Gwynn Jr. for assignment
Dodgers designated OF Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment.
The Dodgers inked Gwynn to a two-year, $2 million contract over the winter, which means they owe him $1.15 million in 2013 if the club is unable to swing a trade. Gwynn, 29, was very useful as a fourth outfielder last season, batting .256/.308/.353 with two homers, 22 RBI, 22 stolen bases and a .660 OPS over 340 plate appearances while playing excellent defense. This season, however, was disastrous. He posted a sub-replacement .232/.276/.293 slash line in 277 at-bats. That's an OPS+ of 58, folks. Los Angeles will try to find a taker for him.

Thu Jul 26 201216:58Tony Gwynn Jr. goes hitless from leadoff spot
Tony Gwynn Jr. went 0-for-4 as the Dodgers' leadoff man Thursday and is hitting .146 in 48 at-bats this month.
Bobby Abreu hasn't been hitting at all, so the Dodgers have been giving Gwynn more at-bats with even worse results. Gwynn is hitting just .237/.280/.300 for the season, so as anything more than a defensive replacement or pinch-runner, he's a liability.
