Anna was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.
Anna will take Randal Grichuk's spot on the 25-man roster, as he was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 17 with a lower-back strain. He's spent most of his career in the minors, but saw a brief stint with the Yankees last season. Anna will serve as a bench player with the ability to play both shortstop and second base, though he has also seen small amounts of time in the outfield during his time in the minors.

Anna will be recalled to replace Randal Grichuk (back) on the active roster, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Rather than bring up an outfielder to replace Grichuk, the Cardinals will add Anna for some depth in the middle infield. Anna has gotten off to a strong start with Triple-A Memphis this season, recording 11 hits in his first 28 at-bats, though only two of those hits have gone for extra bases (two doubles).

Anna has just three hits in 22 at-bats this spring, hurting his already slim chances of making the opening day roster.
Prospect Jacob Wilson has hit very well this spring but he's still likely to start the season in the minors. That leaves Ty Kelly and Pete Kozma in competition with Anna for an opening day roster spot. Kozma has put in work at several positions this spring, including the outfield, which could give him a leg up on Anna. While Kelly is a switch-hitter who has shown an excellent eye this spring. Anna still has shot of cracking the roster, but it has to be considered a long one.

Anna signed a one-year, major league contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Anna made the Yankees' Opening Day roster but went just 3-for-22 in 12 games and was promptly demoted before the end of April. Now 27, Anna doesn't have much power or speed to speak of, but he has hit .296/.385/.432 in parts of two seasons at Triple-A and fits the bill as low-cost middle-infield depth.

In signing Jayson Nix on Sunday, the Pirates were forced to remove Anna from their 40-man roster, after the infielder struggled to hit at Triple-A Indianapolis. He was batting just .186 over 19 games with the Triple-A squad, which may allow him to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Sat Mar 8 201417:44Dean Anna reaches three times for Yankees
Dean Anna went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored in the Yankees' 9-6 defeat of an Astros split-squad on Saturday.
The 27-yearold Anna looked like he might make the Yankees when he was acquired from the Padres in November, but that was before the team re-signed Brendan Ryan and brought in Kelly Johnson, Brian Roberts and Scott Sizemore. Now it'll probably take an injury to someone ahead of him to give him a shot. He's 5-for-13 so far this spring.
