Martinez signed a minor-league contract with Boston, Sox Prospects reports.
The 29-year-old Martinez split time last season between the Angels and Athletics organizations, playing for both teams' Triple-A affiliates. He has 32 games of major-league experience and will serve as the insurance call-up at catcher should Christian Vazquez or Ryan Hanigan suffer injury in Boston. He's essentially taking the role of Dan Butler, who spent some time at Boston last season, but was designated for assignment in the offseason and traded to Washington in January 2015.
