The Kansas City Royals placed right-handed starting pitchers Kris Medlen and Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday.Medlen is dealing with rotator cuff inflammation, while an MRI exam revealed that Young has a strained muscle in his right forearm.Kansas City recalled left-hander Scott Alexander and right-hander Peter Moylan from Triple-A Omaha to fill the roster spots.Medlen will undergo further tests to pinpoint the severity. He experienced soreness after his start on Tuesday and is just 1-3 with a 7.77 ERA.Young is 1-5 with a 6.68 ERA and revealed on Tuesday that he has been bothered by forearm soreness since spring training. He allowed five homers in Monday's loss to the New York Yankees.Dillon Gee will move into the starting rotation and start Saturday versus the Atlanta Braves. The Royals have yet to identify a starter for Sunday's game.

Young tossed 6.1 innings on Friday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five and not factoring into the decision in the win over Minnesota.

Young made 16 of his 34 appearances in 2015 out of the pen, but showed the ability to be effective when starting games off, surrendering a single run on four hits in 11.1 innings in his final two outings, both starts. He's a safe bet to return to the bullpen for the Royals in the playoffs, but the the lanky, soft-tossing righty likely performed well enough in 2015 for a team to take a flyer on him for 2016.

Young earned his 11th win of the season Sunday, striking out a pair and walking just one while no-hitting the Indians through five innings.

A truly special start could have been in the cards for the soft-tossing veteran, but he had been coming out of the bullpen of late and left the game after throwing just 68 pitches. Young will remain in the starting rotation to finish out the season, and he will pitch Friday against the Twins.

While the official reasoning behind his insertion into the rotation Sunday hasn't been announced, it seems likely that he will just replace Jeremy Guthrie in the rotation following another bad outing (nine runs (eight earned), nine hits over 2.1 inning) from Guthrie on Tuesday against the Mariners. It' unclear how the rotation will unfold the next time through, but the Royals will only need one more start from the fifth spot before the postseason begins and they can shrink the rotation to four.

Young will be moved to the Royals' bullpen, the Associated Press reports.

The acquisition of Johnny Cueto will force Young to assume a bullpen role, despite the lanky right-hander's solid surface numbers (3.25 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) over his 99.2 innings this season. Young's unimpressive 66:32 K:BB ratio and propensity for giving up home runs minimize his utility from a fantasy perspective, but his flyball tendencies don't hurt him as much at the spacious Kauffman Stadium. He appears to be a more reliable starting option than Jeremy Guthrie, who could eventually surrender his rotation spot to Young unless he gets his performance back on track quickly.

Young allowed one run in 4.2 innings against the Indians Tuesday, taking a no-decision.

Young allowed three walks and five hits in the short start, but was able to limit the damage with the help of five strikeouts. He has now completed six innings just once this month. Young will carry a 3.25 ERA into his next start this weekend against the Blue Jays.

Young has been hindered by back tightness and is 1-3 in his last five starts. Thursday's three-inning stint was his shortest outing since he allowed five runs while getting just two outs for Seattle last September at Oakland. Young struck out four and walked four while holding the White Sox to two runs on three hits over five innings to earn his eighth win of the season Friday afternoon.

Reaping the benefits of four scoreless frames from the Kansas City bullpen, Young picked up the victory in a matchup against Jeff Samardzija on Friday. The recipe here remains the same, as he induced eight of his nine contact outs through the air in Friday's start. Young's hold on a rotation spot is now in doubt, however, as the Royals are getting Jason Vargas back from the DL for Tuesday's game against the Pirates, likely bumping Young to a long relief role.

Young took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings, striking out four.

He heads into the All-Star break with an impressive 3.00 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, and while it's hard to expect Young to maintain those numbers given his pedestrian arsenal, he should still be able to supply some wins and quality starts for the AL Central-leading Royals.

The big, lanky right-hander turned over a 1-0 deficit to the game's best bullpen, but the Kansas City offense was unable to bail him out, leading to the loss. Young will give it another go in his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Rays.

As long as Young isn't walking batters, he'll have a chance to keep stringing together good starts. He has now gone at least six innings without giving up an earned run four times this season. His ERA sits at 1.98, but his value is limited as he has just two outings with more than four strikeouts all year.

Young will take the rotation spot of Joe Blanton in a move that allows manager Ned Yost to start Edinson Volquez on normal rest Monday. Considering that half of the Royals' Opening Day rotation is either on the disabled list or at least dealing with a minor ailment, Young should continue to own a rotation spot for several weeks to come.

Young (4-1) took his first loss of the year Wednesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven Yankees.

This is the second time in Young's five starts that he's exhibited surprising bat-missing ability, as he struck out nine Tigers on May 1, but just seven batters total in his next three outings. The veteran's still got sparkling stats so far this year, but regression is starting to come for him, so now might be a good time to try to shop him. Young will draw Cleveland on Wednesday.
