RHP Radhames Liz's $2.25 million option was declined by the Pirates on Nov. 5. Liz, 32, got a $250,000 buyout. He finished 1-4 with a 4.24 ERA in 14 relief appearances for Pittsburgh this year.
Tue Sep 15 201512:12Liz designated for assignment by Pirates on Tuesday
Liz was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday.
Liz was used sparingly in September and gave up four earned runs over six innings this month, so the Pirates decided to remove him from the roster and add Vance Worley. Liz's next step will be determined after his waiver period comes to a close.

Liz struck out two batters in two scoreless innings Tuesday against Milwaukee.
He put together an impressive 1.40 ERA in 10 Triple-A starts prior to his recall. Liz failed in an earlier opportunity with Pittsburgh in 2015 but will try to again make the transition from starter to reliever. He's off to a good start.
Tue Sep 1 201516:53Liz called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday
Liz was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.
The Pirates designated Liz for assignment in late May after he walked 10 in 17.1 innings, but the 31-year-old earned another opportunity with a strong showing in 16 appearances (10 starts) with Indianapolis (1.40, 1.06 WHIP). He did still continue to battle control issues on and off after his demotion, but he finished his year with Indy with five consecutive innings without a walk. Liz figures to work in long-relief over the final month, but a spot start or two isn't completely out of the question.
Wed Jun 3 201515:25Liz cleared waivers and outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis
Liz cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
Liz, who was DFA'd on Monday, posted a 3.63 ERA in 11 appearances for the Pirates, but he struggled with control and took three losses in addition to blowing a save. The veteran will look to get back on track at Triple-A in hopes of returning to Pittsburgh later this season.
Mon May 25 201515:23Liz designated for assignment by Pirates on Monday
Liz was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Monday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The Pirates had to make room on the roster for Monday's starter Charlie Morton (hip), and Liz was a logical choice to lose his spot. While Liz turned in a respectable 3.63 ERA in 11 appearances, he also walked 10 in 17.1 innings, taking three losses and blowing a save. The 31-year-old right-hander returned to the major leagues this season for the first time since 2009, but it's uncertain if he'll be back again.

Liz gave up a solo homer on two hits and two walks in three relief innings Thursday against Philadelphia.
The Phillies' Ryan Howard smoked Liz's first pitch into the right field stands. The righthander hasn't pitched as well as his earned-run average (3.21) suggests, as his inflated WHIP (1.64) testifies -- he's walked eight batters in 14 IP. Liz hasn't seemed to earn the team's trust in tight situations, either, and isn't currently in line for potential save opportunities.

Liz scattered two hits and three walks through three innings of scoreless relief against the Cubs on Tuesday.
Only 28 of Liz's 54 pitches went for strikes, but the righthander offered just enough control to give the Bucs an acceptable showing. The three innings represent Liz's longest major-league outing since Sept. 24, 2007, back when he was a rookie with the Orioles.
Sat Apr 4 201517:45Liz will open 2015 campaign as part of Pittsburgh's bullpen
Liz will open the 2015 campaign as part of Pittsburgh's bullpen, Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Liz has endured a long journey since last pitching in the major leagues for Baltimore in 2009. The former top prospect isn't expected to pitch in high leverage situations for the Pirates, but he could pick up an occasional hold. The hard-throwing righty compiled a 1.80 ERA in 15 spring innings, but struggled with his command (5:7 K:BB ratio).

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle confirmed Thursday that the team is transitioning Liz to a long-relief role, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
21 of Liz's 28 career appearances in the majors (from 2007-09) have come as a starter, and he's worked almost exclusively as a starter in the minors over the past several years, but he will indeed work in a long role with Pittsburgh. The 31-year-old right-hander has fared very well out of the bullpen this spring, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in five innings.

Liz hurled a scoreless frame in his spring debut Wednesday, striking out one batter without allowing a walk.
The hard-throwing righty is a good bet to make the Pittsburgh bullpen, provided he can keep his knees healthy and he throws strikes. Liz's fastball looked electric Wednesday and it's possible he could surprise onlookers in 2015.

Manager Clint Hurdle said Liz will be stretched out to 50 pitches during spring training but will be used out of the bullpen in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Liz is a bit of an unknown quantity. The hard-throwing righty, who last pitched in the majors in 2009, was used as a starting pitcher in the Korean Baseball Organization from 2010-2013. Last year, Liz made 12 starts in Toronto's organization before the Blue Jays released him.
Fri Dec 12 201417:54Liz's contract actually for only one year
Liz's contract is actually for only one year, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
This might just be due to a miscommunication, but the Pirates' investment now makes a little more sense. No word if the $3 million figure is also incorrect.
Fri Nov 21 201412:51Liz agreed to two-year, $3 million contract with Pirates on Frid...
Liz agreed to a two-year, $3 million contract with the Pirates on Friday.
Liz has not pitched in the big leagues since 2009, but he pitched well in Korea from 2011-13 and posted a 2.95 ERA in 12 minor league starts last season, so the Pirates are willing to give him a chance to be part of their roster in 2015.
Sat Mar 8 201414:50Radhames Liz to rehab knee in first half
According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Radhames Liz will miss the first half of the 2014 season while rehabbing his knee.
The 30-year-old hurler resurrected his career in the Korean Baseball Organization the past three seasons, posting a 3.06 ERA and striking out 188 in 202 2/3 innings in 2013. He won't be an option for the Jays until the second half of the season.

Fri Mar 7 201420:18Blue Jays ink Radhames Liz to minors contract
Blue Jays signed RHP Radhames Liz to a minor league contract.
The 30-year-old right-hander hasn't appeared in the major leagues since the 2009 season, and owns a career 7.50 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over 110 1/3 innings. He's spent the past three seasons pitching in Korea, most recently posting a 3.06 ERA and leading the Korean Baseball Organization with 188 strikeouts in 202 2/3 innings in 2013. It's a nice low-risk signing for the Jays.

Sun Jan 9 201109:43Liz signs with Korean team
Radhames Liz has signed a contract with the Korean team the LG Twins.
Liz was once looked at as an up and coming talent with the Orioles organization but was never able to live up to the potential. He also spent time with the San Diego Padres organization in 2010. Now he will join fellow pitcher Brian Bannister as former major league pitchers heading oversees this offseason.

Wed Jan 5 201118:28Padres release righty Radhames Liz
Padres released RHP Radhames Liz.
The Padres claimed Liz off waivers from the Orioles before the 2010 season but were unimpressed with the 4.83 ERA and 1.35 WHIP that he posted in 25 appearances at the Triple-A level last year. The 27-year-old righty will be on the hunt for a minor league contract and a spring training invite.
