Coach Mike Pettine indicated Monday that McCown (ankle) might need a day off in practice this week, but the QB should be able to play Sunday against the Broncos, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
For his part, McCown -- who threw for a franchise-record 457 yards in Week 5's overtime win over the Ravcens -- said that he's "hopeful" he'll be able to play this Sunday, so his status is worth monitoring in the coming days. Next up for the Browns' QB snaps should McCown miss any practice reps (or even game action) is Johnny Manziel, with Austin Davis also on hand.

McCown suffered a sprained ankle during Sunday's overtime win against the Ravens and is hopeful of playing in Week 6 against the Broncos, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
McCown finished Sunday's game with a whopping 457 yards and two touchdowns, but tweaked his ankle on Cleveland's game-winning drive during overtime. It's unknown how much the 36-year-old will be impacted by his sprained ankle, but McCown will need to be plenty mobile against the Broncos' vaunted pass rush in Week 6. While McCown's practice participation during this week should help clarify his upcoming availability, backup Johnny Manziel would figure to see increased reps if McCown is limited going forward.

McCown suffered an ankle injury on the winning drive in overtime Sunday against Baltimore and was seen afterward limping in the locker room. "One of the linemen was telling me he got bull-rushed and held and tackled into me, so I rolled my ankle," he told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "It feels all right. At the moment it was pretty painful. I think I'll be fine, though."
McCown didn't need to come out of the game, so the injury sounds minor. Still, we'll need to watch his progress this week to make sure it isn't something more significant. McCown was 36-of-51 passing for 457 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

McCown connected on 36-of-51 passes for 457 yards and two scores in Sunday's win over Baltimore. He added 12 yards on the ground on three carries.
McCown nearly doubled his per-game average in yards against the slumping Ravens. Though perhaps best known for playing ahead of Johnny Manziel, McCown is quietly putting together a solid season, posting an impressive 6-to-1 TD/INT ratio in four starts. Coming into the season, there were two primary questions about McCown: whether he could repeat his efficient performance of 2013 and whether he had the weapons to succeed in Cleveland. Thus far, McCown has been accurate, careful with the football and developed a rapport with the likes of Gary Barnidge, Travis Benjamin and Andrew Hawkins. Next week he'll be tested by the Broncos' relentless pass rush and deep secondary.

McCown (hand) completed 32-of-41 passes for 356 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-27 loss at San Diego. He did lose a fumble at one point.
McCown moved the ball well for most of the game, although the Browns' offense bogged down a few times on the Chargers' side of the field, which led to four field goals by Travis Coons. He was clutch late, completing 4-of-4 passes for 45 yards on a game-tying drive that culminated in a short touchdown pass to TE Gary Barnidge at 2:09 of the final period. Unfortunately, McCown left too much time for Philip Rivers, who engineered his own clutch drive that ended with the game-winning field goal. In any event, it was probably one of McCown's best games as a pro, and he's certainly silenced most of the critics that are calling for Johnny Manziel to start at QB. The veteran QB will face a suspect Ravens' secondary in Week 5.

Though McCown's right hand was banged up following Sunday's loss to the Raiders, he won't miss any practice time, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Though the report relays that McCown was spotted in the locker room Monday with "a swollen right hand, a gash on the top of it and a wrapped ring finger," the quarterback's Week 4 status does not appear to be in any danger at this stage.

X-rays on McCown's right hand came back negative after Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Raiders, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
McCown jammed a finger during the preseason but didn't end up missing any practice time. Sunday's injury is likely unrelated, and while it doesn't sound too serious, he may have some swelling during the week. McCown struggled in the first half of Sunday's game, but his starting job probably isn't in any immediate danger, as he made a contest of it after halftime, ultimately finishing with 341 passing yards and two touchdowns.

McCown completed 28-of-49 passes for 341 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's loss to Oakland.
McCown was asked to sling the rock often with the Browns trailing all game, and came out with a nice-looking stat line even if it wasn't enough to get his team the win. He immediately reclaimed the starting quarterback role from Johnny Manziel after returning from a concussion, and nothing about his game today would suggest McCown is in any danger of losing his job to Manziel any time soon.
Wed Sep 23 201509:42Josh McCown: Cleared to Start Sunday
McCown (concussion) will draw the start at QB for the Browns over Johnny Manziel in Sunday's game against the Raiders, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
The report relays that McCown has been cleared by an independent neurologist to return to action from his concussion. With that in mind, McCown is now slated to practice Wednesday in some capacity as the Browns begin their preparations for Sunday's contest.

McCown (concussion) could return to practice as soon as Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
McCown still needs to be cleared by both the Browns and an independent neurologist, so a Wednesday return to practice is far from assured. He's still listed atop the team's depth chart, but head coach Mike Pettine said the team will talk to its quarterbacks Tuesday afternoon, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Johnny Manziel may get another shot to start in Week 3 against the Raiders, after completing eight of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 28-14 win over the Titans.

McCown (concussion) remains listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the Browns' unofficial depth chart, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
McCown remains in the league's concussion protocol, but the implication here is that he'll return to a starting role after he's cleared. When asked about it Tuesday in an interview with NFL.com, head coach Mike Pettine was noncommittal, praising the positive attributes of both players while refusing to name a specific starter or play out hypotheticals. Pettine likely won't have to provide a concrete answer until McCown is cleared by the league, leaving prospective fantasy owners in limbo in advance of Cleveland's Week 3 matchup against the Raiders.
Mon Sep 21 201512:31McCown still going through Browns' concussion protocol
McCown is still going through the Browns' concussion protocol, Cleveland.com reports.
McCown missed Sunday's game against the Titans after failing to be cleared by the Browns' team doctors and independent neurologists in wake of his concussion suffered during Week 1. While McCown reportedly was symptom-free throughout last week and was confident of returning Sunday, Cleveland's Johnny Manziel got the start at quarterback and flashed big-play ability. As a result, the Browns' signal-caller situation as it relates to McCown's concussion condition should be worthwhile to monitor in advance of Week 3's matchup against the Raiders.

McCown's (concussion) teammate Johnny Manzell will start Week 2 against the Titans, ESPN's Adam Scheffer reports.
Apparently McCown isn't quite ready, either physically or in not getting enough prep time. While we would think he'd be cleared to play in Week 3, the team probably views the two quarterbacks close enough that Johnny Football's performance this week bears very close watching by McCown owners.
Thu Sep 17 201513:31McCown (concussion) appears to be in line to start Sunday agains...
McCown (concussion) appears to be in line to start Sunday against the Titans, provided he's cleared to practice Friday, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. "I don't see an issue if he's cleared and practices fully tomorrow, I don't see, barring anything unforeseen, a reason why we wouldn't play him."
McCown suffered a concussion in the season opener against the Jets, and is currently participating in the league's mandatory concussion protocol. If he's cleared of symptoms and is OK to practice Friday, it seems apparent that he will be the Week 2 starter in Cleveland. Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo also indirectly gave McCown a vote of confidence, stating that "I don't notice any change" in the quarterback since last week. Meanwhile, Johnny Manziel continues to take reps with the first-team offense, preparing as if he'll start that game.
Wed Sep 16 201513:25Josh McCown: Won't Practice Before Friday
McCown (concussion) won't be cleared to practice before Friday, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
When Friday rolls around, coach Mike Pettine is in line to make a decision on whether McCown is an option to start Sunday's game against the Titans. In the event that McCown isn't ready for the assignment, Johnny Manziel -- who is dealing with elbow tendinitis and will be limited at practice Wednesday -- would be in line to make his second career NFL start.
Mon Sep 14 201517:12McCown in NFL's concussion protocol
McCown is in the NFL's concussion protocol, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
As a result, the Browns are preparing Johnny Manziel to start Sunday's game against the Titans, though such a potential outcome is not set in stone, especially if McCown is able to fit in some practice reps by Thursday or Friday.
Sun Sep 13 201513:48Josh McCown: Suffers Concussion, Ruled Out Sunday
McCown has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game due to a concussion, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
McCown will now have to watch as Johnny Manziel takes over the offensive unit. The veteran quarterback will now have to enter and clear the league's concussion protocol before he can suit up for the Browns' Week 2 home opener against Tennessee. McCown was 5-for-8 with 49 yards prior to exiting.
Sun Sep 13 201513:40Josh McCown: Being Evaluated For Head Injury
McCown exited in the first quarter of Sunday's game and is being evaluated for a head injury, according to the Browns' official site.
McCown took multiple high-impact hits when attempting to reach the endzone in a play that ultimately resulted in a turnover -- and left the Browns scoreless in that red zone possession. Look for the team to provide an update in the near future, including clarification on whether or not he sustained a concussion and will have to enter the league's mandatory protocol. While McCown is undergoing evaluation, backup quarterback Johnny Manziel will take over as the signal caller.

McCown will not play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Bears, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Per the report, other Cleveland starters are also in line to rest on Thursday. Though holding McCown out of game action this coming week is not an injury-related move, coach Mike Pettine noted that he'd like to see the veteran QB do a better job of avoiding big hits. "He's got to understand it's a long season and we need him out there," Pettine said of the Browns' presumed Week 1 starter.
Sat Aug 29 201521:15McCown completed 17 of 23 passes for 117 yards and two touchdown...
McCown completed 17 of 23 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns, adding three carries for 20 yards, in Saturday's preseason game against the Buccaneers.
McCown played into the third quarter before giving way to Thaddeus Lewis. The highlight was a 16-play, 80-yard drive in the first quarter that featured a pair of McCown scrambles for first downs. Likely done for the preseason, McCown should enjoy working behind a strong offensive line, but he arguably has the league's worst supporting cast at the skill positions.
