Reds signed RHP Adam Russell to a minor league contract.
Russell signed a minor league deal with the D'Backs over the winter but didn't wind up pitching for them. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011 and posted a 2.37 ERA in 60 2/3 innings last season for the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk. The big righty is merely minor league depth.

Mon Jul 18 201116:06Rays designate Adam Russell for assignment
Rays designated RHP Adam Russell for assignment.
Russell is the unfortunate victim of a roster crunch, as the Rays called up Alex Cobb to start Monday night and need a fresh arm for the bullpen. The 28-year-old has a 3.03 ERA and 13/20 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings this season. The sudden lack of strikeouts are a disappointment, but he does have a ground ball rate north of 50 percent. He should draw some interest on the waiver wire.

Sun Mar 20 201116:29Rays' Russell allows three runs in relief
Adam Russell surrendered three runs and four hits in one-third of an inning Sunday against the Orioles.
The Rays are counting on Russell to be a big part of their pen after acquiring him from the Padres in the Jason Bartlett deal, but he has a 7.88 ERA this spring. During that span, he's allowed 19 hits in just eight innings of work. He doesn't look like much of a sleeper saves candidate at the moment.

Russell has landed on his third team in the last couple years, as he was also part of the Jake Peavy deal with the White Sox. Russell stands 6-foot-8 and regularly touches the high-90s with his fastball. He registered a solid 1.21 WHIP in 15 2/3 innings of relief this past season for the Padres and should immediately find a spot in the Rays' bullpen, probably as a middle reliever or setup man.
