Jay Payton will start in left field Wednesday against the Padres, his first start since being called up from the minors last week. | ||||||
At the risk of being swept, the Rockies are looking to catch lightning in a bottle with Payton, who had a pinch-hit RBI single in last night's game against the Padres. This will be Payton's first start in the big leagues since September 27, 2008 as a member of the Orioles. It's worth a shot, really. Seth Smith is batting just .206 this month and .197 since the All-Star break. | ||||||

The Rockies are expected to call up outfielder Jay Payton and right-hander Edgmer Escalona before Tuesday's game. | ||||||
Just a little depth. Payton, 37, was signed to a minor league contract in January and has hit .323 with six homers, 74 RBI and 13 stolen bases this year at the Triple-A level. Escalona, 23, has posted a 3.26 ERA over the last two months at Colorado Springs and will pitch in middle relief. | ||||||
