Tue Sep 1 201509:00Herrera flied out as pinch hitter Monday
Herrera flied out as a pinch hitter Monday.
Though he showed his versatility and value to the Cubs earlier in the year while the team was waiting for Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, and others to join the team, Herrera is clearly an afterthought at this point. He only batted 18 times in all of August, hitting two doubles and striking out five times.
Mon Jul 20 201500:28Herrera 2-4 with pair of RBI in Sunday's win over Braves
Herrera went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in Sunday's win over the Braves.
It was the first start in six games for the 30-year-old, but he filled in admirably at second base and actually provided the game-winning RBI. However, Herrera is unlikely to see consistent playing time barring an injury to one of the Cubs' other infielders.

Herrera took advantage of a rare start at third base Thursday against the Mets, going 1-for-2 with a three run homer -- his first of the year -- and a walk.
Kris Bryant doesn't take too many games off, so Herrera tends to see more work at second base on those occasions when he's in the lineup. Herrera's career high in homers is three even though he spent parts of five seasons in Colorado, so there's not much to see here except in the deepest of NL-only formats.

Herrera got the start at second base Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
It's his first multi-hit game of the season, so Herrera isn't likely to be a threat to Addison Russell's spot any time soon. If he continues to produce when he gets a chance, however, Cubs manager Joe Maddon may begin to look for ways to sneak Herrera into the lineup.

Herrera failed to get off the bench Thursday against the Mets and has just two at-bats in May.
Herrera has played in only three games since Apr. 25 after playing a significant role on the team during the first three weeks of the season. With Tommy La Stella due back soon, it wouldn't be surprising to see Herrera on the chopping block.

Herrera will make his fourth straight start at second base Sunday against the Padres, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
An oblique injury to Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara's ongoing struggles at the plate have paved the way for Herrera to pick up regular at-bats for the Cubs. While the secure lineup spot might give Herrera some appeal in NL-only formats, he's been deployed in the nine hole in each of those starts, minimizing his chances of scoring runs.
Sun Apr 12 201514:19Herrera getting start for Cubs in place for injured Mike Olt
Herrera is getting the start for the Cubs in place for the injured Mike Olt.
Olt was hit by a pitch on his wrist in Saturday's game. Herrera could be in for a few starts while Olt recovers from the injury.
Sun Apr 5 201515:31Herrera made Opening Day roster
Herrera made the Opening Day roster, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Herrera beat out Ryan Sweeney, who was designated for assignment Sunday. Of course, Herrera's roster spot may eventually go to Kris Bryant in mid-to-late April, though the Cubs could lose other infielders to injures by that time. Herrera will work in a utility role for the time being.
Wed Apr 1 201522:24Herrera
Herrera, Matt Szczur, and Ryan Sweeney are battling for the final two spots on the Cubs' bench, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports.
Herrera is the only one of the trio not on the 40-man roster, and with Chris Denorfia (hamstring) and Chris Coghlan (neck) banged up, the Cubs may opt to keep the two outfielders ahead of Herrera.
Sun Dec 7 201410:42Herrera signed with Cubs on minor league deal
Herrera signed with the Cubs on a minor league deal, CBS Sports reports.
Herrera spent most of 2014 in the big leagues, slashing .233/.307/.289 in 42 games with the Red Sox. He elected free agency rather than take his assignment to Triple-A, but it appears he'll have to start back in the minors in the Cubs organization.

Herrera will become a free agent after declining his assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
The Red Sox were looking to clear a 40-man spot, but Herrera opted to test the free agent market, as is his right. He may be able to catch on as a utility infielder with another club.

Herrera will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, CSN New England reports.
Herrera occupies a spot on the 40-man roster, a spot the Red Sox might want to allocate to a younger player. If he stays on the roster, he'll compete for a bench gig next spring.
Mon Jul 7 201415:41Red Sox option Jonathan Herrera to Triple-A
Red Sox optioned INF Jonathan Herrera to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Herrera was moved off Boston's active roster Monday to clear a spot for Mike Carp, who is recovered from his fractured foot. Herrera has hit .233/.307/.289 in 104 plate appearances this season in the major leagues.

Sun Apr 13 201423:16Jonathan Herrera plates run against Yankees
Jonathan Hererra went 1-for-4 and drove home a run in Sunday's loss to the Yankees.
Herrera's RBI single off Ivan Nova got the Yankees on the board in the second inning. He's sharing time at third base while Will Middlebrooks is on the disabled list, and it hitting .211/.318/.211. His already minimal fantasy value will be non-existent once Middlebrooks returns.

Mon Apr 7 201414:40Herrera in Monday's starting lineup
Jonathan Herrera is playing shortstop and batting eighth for the Red Sox for Monday's game against the Rangers.
Herrera starts for the third game in a row. However, Ryan Roberts is active for Monday's game, so the streak may end on Tuesday. Herrera has been filling in for the injured Will Middlebrooks.

Red Sox avoided arbitration with INF Jonathan Herrera by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

Wed Dec 18 201314:19Red Sox acquire 2B Herrera in Morales deal
Red Sox acquired 2B Jonathan Herrera from the Rockies for LHP Franklin Morales and RHP Chris Martin.
Herrera has slashed a ho-hum .265/.325/.332 over 1,100-plus plate appearances the past five seasons in Colorado. The 29-year-old gives Boston a cheap utility infielder who plays outstanding defense at multiple positions for two more team-controlled years. He's not fantasy relevant.

Tue May 21 201305:22Herrera batting .283 in limited playing time
Jonathan Herrera is batting .283/.327/.370 through 49 plate appearances.
If his slash numbers hold, Herrera will finish with the best offensive season of his career, topping the .694 OPS he mustered in 2010. Unfortunately, the utility infielder has scuffled in the field recently, recording three errors in his last 12 games.

Wed Jan 23 201315:59Rockies, Herrera avoid arb. with 1-year deal
Rockies and INF Jonathan Herrera avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 contract.
The two sides settled at the midpoint of arbitration figures that were exchanged last week. Herrera was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after batting .262/.317/.351 with three home runs, 12 RBI and a .688 OPS in 251 plate appearances in 2012. He figures to serve as a utility infielder for the Rockies in 2013.
