INF Clint Barmes had his $2 million option declined by the Padres on Nov. 3, making him a free agent. Barmes, 36, hit .232/.281/.353 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 98 games for San Diego this year.

Barmes is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins, MLB.com's Bill Center reports.

Barmes remains stuck in a timeshare at shortstop with Alexi Amarista, will neither option being especially appealing for fantasy purposes. Though Barmes is batting .273, his lack of counting stats production at the bottom of the San Diego order severely limits his upside.

He's now stunningly sitting on a .293 batting average, though it's been boosted by an absurd .410 BABIP, and with just four walks against 29 strikeouts over 92 at-ats this season, Barmes isn't exactly experiencing a late-career surge. He also doesn't get to play every day, limiting his value to NL-only formats.

A home run off Clayton Kershaw is impressive, but when Barmes does it, it's almost unbelievable, but he helped chase the Dodgers' ace from the game in the seventh inning. He's also raised his average to a surprising .284 thanks to a recent hot streak -- over his last six starts, he's gone 10-for-23 (.435) with a double, a triple and a homer. Barmes still splits time at shortstop with Alexi Amarista and doesn't have much in the way of tools, but he's proven ownable in NL-only formats.

Barmes is getting his second straight start against his former club and third straight overall. He went 2-for-5 with a run and a strikeout in Monday's game.

As spring training has gone on, Amarista has emerged as the likely starter shortstop on Opening Day while Barmes is projected to fill in as a utility infielder off the Padres' bench.

Barmes signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.

Barmes' bat certainly didn't earn him this contract -- he's a .246/.295/.380 career hitter at the major league level -- rather it was his quality glove at the middle-infield positions. The Padres have a need at shortstop with Everth Cabrera non-tendered, and Barmes' experience and defensive abilities likely give him the inside track at the regular job, but he'll have to fight off Alexi Amarista in spring training.

Barmes (groin) was reinstated from the DL and recalled Monday.

Barmes will come up from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was rehabbing the strained groin that cost him seven weeks. Barmes, who hasn't played since June 29, is hitting .239 with four RBI and 18 strikeouts in 88 at-bats this season. In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh designated Jayson Nix for assignment.
