INF Clint Barmes had his $2 million option declined by the Padres on Nov. 3, making him a free agent. Barmes, 36, hit .232/.281/.353 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 98 games for San Diego this year.
Sun Jul 26 201513:49Barmes out of lineup Sunday against Marlins
Barmes is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins, MLB.com's Bill Center reports.
Barmes remains stuck in a timeshare at shortstop with Alexi Amarista, will neither option being especially appealing for fantasy purposes. Though Barmes is batting .273, his lack of counting stats production at the bottom of the San Diego order severely limits his upside.
Sun Jul 19 201513:27Barmes out of lineup Sunday against Rockies
Barmes is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rockies.
Barmes will have now surrendered the start at shortstop to Will Middlebrooks for the fourth time in the past five games. After a slow start to the season, Barmes rebounded by posting a .927 OPS in June, but is 5-for-21 with seven strikeouts since the beginning of July.

Barmes went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
He's now stunningly sitting on a .293 batting average, though it's been boosted by an absurd .410 BABIP, and with just four walks against 29 strikeouts over 92 at-ats this season, Barmes isn't exactly experiencing a late-career surge. He also doesn't get to play every day, limiting his value to NL-only formats.
Sat Jun 13 201509:54Barmes 2-4 with solo home run in 4-3 loss to Dodgers on Saturday
Barmes went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a 4-3 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.
A home run off Clayton Kershaw is impressive, but when Barmes does it, it's almost unbelievable, but he helped chase the Dodgers' ace from the game in the seventh inning. He's also raised his average to a surprising .284 thanks to a recent hot streak -- over his last six starts, he's gone 10-for-23 (.435) with a double, a triple and a homer. Barmes still splits time at shortstop with Alexi Amarista and doesn't have much in the way of tools, but he's proven ownable in NL-only formats.

Barmes is starting at shortstop Monday and will bat eighth against the Dodgers.
Barmes gets the nod over Alexi Amarista, but it could be a temporary lineup change as Amarista is expected to be the everyday shortstop. That said, Barmes has had some success against Dodgers' starter Clayton Kershaw, going 7-for-27 against the three-time Cy Young winner.

Barmes went 1-for-2 Monday against Cincinnati, blasting his first home run of the spring.
Barmes is batting .242 with eight strikeouts and three walks in 33 at-bats this spring. He was brought in on a one-year deal in the offseason to compete with Alexi Amarista for the starting shortstop role. As spring training has gone on, Amarista has emerged as the likely starter shortstop on Opening Day while Barmes is projected to fill in as a utility infielder off the Padres' bench.
Wed Dec 3 201418:57Barmes signed one-year contract with Padres on Wednesday
Barmes signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports.
Barmes' bat certainly didn't earn him this contract -- he's a .246/.295/.380 career hitter at the major league level -- rather it was his quality glove at the middle-infield positions. The Padres have a need at shortstop with Everth Cabrera non-tendered, and Barmes' experience and defensive abilities likely give him the inside track at the regular job, but he'll have to fight off Alexi Amarista in spring training.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said that Barmes (groin) might be able to rejoin the team during the upcoming series against the Cardinals, the Associated Press reports.
If Barmes is ready to return this week, he'll reprise his role as a spot starter at shortstop behind Jordy Mercer, but that role will afford him with very few chances to accrue at-bats.

Barmes (groin) moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Barmes will be eligible to return from the DL whenever he's deemed ready, but because he's missed the last six weeks with a groin strain, a lengthy rehab assignment will be required. The Pirates expect to have him back at some point in late-August.
Wed Aug 13 201412:05Barmes (groin) will begin rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona...
Barmes (groin) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Wednesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Manager Clint Hurdle stopped short of saying Barmes will need to go through a spring training-length rehab stint, but the team will take things slowly with the middle infielder. Barmes is expected to also spend time playing for Triple-A Indy before making his return to the majors in late August.
Sun Jul 6 201411:52Clint Barmes (groin) heads to DL
Pirates placed SS Clint Barmes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 30, with a Grade 3 adductor sprain.
Barmes hasn't played for a week, so he apparently had been holding out hope that the ailment would get better. He's expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Michael Martinez has replaced Barmes on the roster.

Thu Jun 19 201417:44Barmes has four-hit day against Reds
Clint Barmes went 4-for-5 with a run scored in Thursday's extra-inning win over the Reds.
He was also hit by a pitch in the game-winning rally in the 12th inning. Barmes had three singles and a double, notching his first four-hit game since May 30, 2009. The 35-year-old managed to improve his batting average from .227 to .263 in just one day. We're not counting on many big days moving forward.

Sat Mar 1 201409:18Clint Barmes will be used as utility player
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Friday that Clint Barmes will see time at second base and third base this spring as he prepares for his new utility role.
The Pirates are intent on handing the starting shortstop position to Jordy Mercer for 2014, which shifts the defensive-minded Barmes into a utility role. Since Barmes offered very little with the bat anyways, he can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Barmes just finished his two-year, $10.5 million deal with the Pirates and will take a paycut to stick around as a utility player. The 34-year-old hit just .211/.249/.309 with five home runs and 23 RBI over 330 plate appearances this past season, but plays quality defense and will serve as a backup to Jordy Mercer in 2014.

Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says that the Pirates have kept in touch with shortstop Clint Barmes.
The Pirates are looking for a capable defensive shortstop to pair with Jordy Mercer. Barmes doesn't bring much with the bat, but he consistently rates among baseball's best defensive shortstops year after year.
