McKenry will undergo surgery Monday to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
McKenry has apparently been playing hurt since first hurting the knee in June, and the Rockies finally decided last week that they didn't want the backup catcher to fight through the pain any longer. He'll go under the knife for the second knee surgery of his career. The Rockies have already placed McKenry on the 60-day DL to spell the end of his season. It's quite likely McKenry has played his last game in a Colorado uniform, as he'll become a free agent this offseason.

McKenry (knee) was placed on the 60-day DL on Wednesday.
The official diagnosis for McKenry is a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee, an injury which will end the 30-year-old's season. Dustin Garneau was called up to serve as Nick Hundley's backup behind the plate. McKenry turned in a disappointing .205/.329/.402 batting line in his 58 games this season, with a 4-for-29 mark in the second half before succumbing to the injury.

McKenry smacked a bases-clearing double in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Padres.
McKenry's big hit busted the game open and gave starting pitcher Chris Rusin all the breathing room he needed as he rolled to his first career shutout. The backstop is maintaining a .331 on-base percentage for the season while seeing limited plate appearances behind regular catcher Nick Hundley.

McKenry crushed a walk-off two-run homer in Wednesday's 11-inning thriller against the Mariners.
The home run was McKenry's only hit in five at-bats on the afternoon, and had to provide him with some measure of redemption. In Monday's series opener, McKenry failed to come up clutch with the game on the line, striking out in his ninth-inning to end the game while stranding the tying run at third base. The backup catcher's batting average has fallen more than 100 points below the .315 mark he posted in 2014, but he'll at least be able to bask in the afterglow of his first walk-off hit for a little while.

McKenry (knee) will rejoin the lineup Monday against the Reds.
McKenry has suffered from fluid buildup in his knee recently, last starting a game behind the plate July 17. He did serve as a pinch hitter both last Wednesday and Saturday, but he will now return behind the plate for the Rockies.
Fri Jul 24 201518:08McKenry (knee) out of lineup Friday against Reds
McKenry (knee) is out of the lineup Friday against the Reds, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
A buildup of fluid in McKenry's knee prevented the 30-year-old from catching Wednesday, and he remains out for the opener against Cincinnati. He was likely to sit out regardless of the injury, though, as Nick Hundley is the primary option behind the plate and team just had an off-day Thursday.

McKenry was bypassed for the start behind the plate in Wednesday's loss to the Rangers after he experienced a buildup of fluid in his right knee, the Associated Press reports.
McKenry was slated to serve as the battery mate for Jorge De La Rosa, but the minor injury prompted manager Walt Weiss to hold the catcher out. He was able to make an appearance as a pinch-hitter later in the game, however, with Weiss suggesting afterward that McKenry would likely be ready to go for Friday's game against the Reds.

Colorado Rockies catcher Mike McKenry is dealing with a buildup of fluid in his right knee, according to the Associated Press. McKenry was held out of the lineup Wednesday with typical battery mate Jorge De La Rosa on the mound, but manager Walt Weiss said he should be ready to return Friday.

McKenry went 2-for-4 with a double, homer, and three RBI in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Dodgers.
McKenry's playing time has been scarce this season with Nick Hundley both hitting well and offering superior defense behind the plate, but the backup backstop makes for a strong target in daily formats just about whenever he's scheduled to start at Coors Field. Over 135 career plate appearances at the Rockies' home park, he's slashing .360/.470/.586.

McKenry got the start behind the plate Saturday, going 1-for-4 with a solo home run.
It was his second home run of the season, coming in just 47 at-bats. McHenry's been productive in his rare opportunities, slashing .255/.375/.447 on the season, but he'll need Nick Hundley to cool down before he has a chance of seeing his workload increase significantly.

McKenry went 1-for-2 with his first homer of the year, drew three walks, drove in two runs and scored twice Thursday in a win over the Phillies.
In a manner typical of Rockies hitters, McKenry has been a dynamo at home this year, albeit in a tiny sample -- he's 6-for-15 (.400) with the homer, three doubles and six walks (against four strikeouts) at Coors Field. Unfortunately, he doesn't see very regular action backing up Nick Hundley, largely limiting McKenry's fantasy utility to deeper NL-only formats.

McKenry supplied three hits, a run, and a stolen base in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Padres.
Given that McKenry was able to uphold a .315 batting average last season, the three-hit showing at Coors Field wasn't overly surprising, but the stolen base sure was. After failing to record a stolen base in his first five seasons in the big leagues, McKenry now has a steal in two of his last three starts. That certainly shouldn't be viewed as a trend, and neither should fantasy players expect regular starting assignments for McKenry because of it. Primary catcher Nick Hundley is hitting well so far this season and offers superior defense behind the plate, which should ensure that his name is penciled into the lineup for the majority of the Rockies' games.

McKenry went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Giants.
It was the first stolen base in 252 career MLB games for McKenry. The backstop was making just his second start of the season, as Nick Hundley was just receiving a day off for the series finale. Hundley appears to be firmly entrenched as the Rockies' regular catcher, which will leave few opportunities for McKenry to pick up regular at-bats and unless an injury occurs.

McKenry will start at catcher Sunday against the Cubs.
McKenry will take over for Nick Hundley, who will get a day off for the day game following the night game. McKenry isn't expected to serve as the personal catcher for anyone on the Rockies' staff in 2015, so look for his reps to be few and far between.

Manager Walt Weiss indicated Tuesday that he has no plans of deploying McKenry as the personal catcher for any of the team's starting pitchers, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Instead, Weiss said any starts that McKenry or Wilin Rosario receive in place of starting catcher Nick Hundley would be dictated by off days and the handedness of opposing pitchers. Since McKenry isn't as polished of a defender as Nick Hundley and also bats right-handed, expect McKenry's starts to be mostly limited to scenarios where the Rockies play a day game after a night game. The presence of three catchers on the roster could make it exceedingly difficult for McKenry to surpass the 192 plate appearances he saw in 2014.

Manager Walt Weiss now appears inclined to carry three catchers to open the season, putting McKenry on sturdy ground to win a 25-man roster berth, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. "Honestly, the way that it looks like it's heading, is if we carry the two catchers in [Nick] Hundley and McKenry, then [Wilin] Rosario lines up now as that half-catcher who plays first base," Weiss said Tuesday.
McKenry's standing with the Rockies appeared to be tenuous after Weiss suggested earlier in the spring that the team would consider going with a four-man bench consisting of only one backup catcher to open the season, but it appears the manager has since changed his tune. Rosario's lack of development as a game caller and pitch blocker the last few seasons has prompted the Rockies to move him to a position where his defensive shortcomings won't be as glaring, leaving McKenry to serve as the primary understudy to Hundley behind the plate. Though his role is seemingly secure, McKenry may not have much of an opportunity to build on last season's impressive .315/.398/.512 batting line. McKenry remains inferior defensively to Hundley and bats from the same side of the plate, likely closing off the possibility of a platoon developing. Instead, McKenry's chances to pick up starts may be primarily limited to day-game-after-night-game scenarios.

With manager Walt Weiss suggesting earlier this week that the Rockies would prefer to use a four-man bench this season, McKenry could be on the outside looking in for a spot on the club's 25-man roster, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.
After signing Nick Hundley to a two-year contract during the offseason, the Rockies will have three catchers with extensive MLB experience in their camp. Unlike Hundley and Rosario, however, McKenry has a less expensive contract attached to his name, and isn't the asset that Hundley is defensively or Rosario is offensively. There's a possibility that the Rockies could deal one of the three catchers by the end of camp -- Rosario's name has been floated around in trade rumors all winter -- which would eliminate the team's need to expose McKenry to waivers. In any event, considering the existing positional logjam, in addition to some expected regression from a .315 batting average that was propped up by a .381 BABiP, McKenry seems unlikely to deliver the same sort of value he supplied in two-catcher formats in 2014.
Fri Jan 16 201519:18McKenry agreed to one-year
McKenry agreed to a one-year, $1.0876 million contract with the Rockies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
McKenry's performance in a limited role last season (.315/.398/.512 with eight homers in 57 games) will likely have many in two-catcher leagues licking their chops next spring, but there are reasons for skepticism. He had a .381 BABIP and 18.2% HR/FB rate. Also, veteran Nick Hundley was brought in during the offseason, so McKenry isn't even a lock to break camp with the big club barring a Wilin Rosario trade.

McKenry went 2-for-6 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers.
Wilin Rosario's hot bat has limited McKenry's at-bats over the past two weeks, but it hasn't done much to dampen the backup catcher's excellent production in limited duty this season. He's poised to finish 2014 with a .315/.398/.512 line over 168 at-bats, with the batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage all representing career bests.
Wed Sep 17 201410:47McKenry 2-3 with run and RBI in Tuesday's win over Dodgers
McKenry went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers.
McKenry has seen his playing time tail off over the last week with Wilin Rosario returning to full health, but he'll still retain value through the end of the week, when the Rockies conclude their homestand with the Diamondbacks. Given his excellent numbers at Coors Field this season (.351/.457/.545 batting line), McKenry should remain a worthy consideration in daily leagues anytime he's set to start at home.
