Sun Sep 516:25Justin Upton Placed On Injured List
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton (back) has been placed on the 10-day injured list. The 34-year-old outfielder was scratched from Saturday's game due to back discomfort. A day later, the organization has decided to place Upton on the injured list for at least 10 days. Before getting injured, Upton was hitting .211 with 17 home runs for the Angels this season. He doesn't offer much upside in fantasy leagues outside of his power numbers. Kean Wong has been recalled to take his spot on the active roster.

Sat Sep 422:14Justin Upton Remains Out Saturday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton (back) was not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers. He continues to deal with nagging injuries, which have hindered him all season long. Upton tried to play on Saturday, but back spasms stopped him from getting into the lineup. There really isn't much upside from Upton right now anyway. He has decent power with 17 home runs, but won't offer much outside of that. Most fantasy managers can find a better option right now.

Thu Aug 2612:42Justin Upton Out Again, But Available Off The Bench
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton (calf) is out of the starting lineup for the third straight game on Thursday. However, he will be available for the team off the bench if he is needed, according to Sam Blum of The Athletic. Upton is currently dealing with a calf injury. Prior to the injury, he was in the midst of an 0-for-11 slump at the plate. He's slashed just .140/.232/.260 over August as a whole. Jo Adell is making his third consecutive start in left field on Thursday while Juan Lagares is covering right field.

Tue Aug 2418:20Justin Upton Sitting Out Against Orioles On Tuesday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton (calf) is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. He is dealing with a minor calf issue, but Upton appears to be day-to-day. He might be available off the bench, but the Angels might elect to give him another night off. Juan Lagares will bat ninth and play right field versus righty Spenser Watkins on Tuesday. Sadly, Lagares doesn't have enough upside with the bat to warrant using as a streaming choice or DFS choice.

Fri Aug 2018:15Justin Upton Not Starting On Friday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton isn't in the lineup on Friday for a matchup with the Cleveland Indians and left-hander Sam Hentges. Upton is batting .222 with a .307 on-base percentage, 17 home runs, and four stolen bases in 343 plate appearances this season, but won't start against Hentges. Jo Adell is batting sixth and starting in left field instead. The 22-year-old is batting .213 with a .273 on-base percentage, a home run, and a stolen base in 66 plate appearances so far this year. You're probably better off looking elsewhere for a streaming option on Friday in daily fantasy play and season-long formats.

Tue Aug 1710:38Justin Upton Homers Monday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton had a first-inning home run off of Gerrit Cole during Monday's 2-1 loss against the New York Yankees. It was his first home run in his last 12 games. Altogether he went 1-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and two strikeouts. He now has 16 home runs on the year and is slashing .224/.309/.429 with 37 RBI, 46 runs, and four stolen bases. Hopefully, the home run will get Upton going, as he has a .488 OPS since returning from the injured list on July 22. He should get more playing time after the Angels designated Adam Eaton for assignment, with who he was platooning alongside in the outfield. If he can get hot, fantasy managers needing outfield help should consider Upton and play him as long as his streak lasts. However, if he continues producing poor numbers, he is safe to leave on the waiver wire.

Fri Aug 1313:58Justin Upton Held Hitless Thursday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton couldn't get a hit in four at-bats during Thursday's 6-3 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. His post-injury struggles continued, as he is now slashing .143/.217/.222 in 17 games since being activated from the IL on July 22. Amid his struggles, he's now on the short side of a platoon with Adam Eaton and has only started three of their past six games. His fantasy value has diminished in most leagues, but he is a streaming option when the Angels face a left-hander, with Upton slugging .464 against them.

Sun Aug 815:45Justin Upton Out Of Sunday's Lineup
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton isn't starting on Sunday. The Angels will match up with the Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Walker Buehler but will do so with Upton on the bench. The veteran is batting .224 with a .313 on-base percentage, 15 home runs, and three stolen bases in 316 plate appearances this season. Jo Adell is getting the start in left field and batting sixth. The 22-year-old has collected five hits and a pair of walks in 21 plate appearances this season. On most days, he'd be worth a look as a streaming option, however with Buehler on the mound for the Dodgers, fantasy managers might want to look elsewhere for outfield help on Sunday.

Thu Aug 512:49Justin Upton Isn't Starting On Thursday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton isn't in the lineup for a Thursday matchup with the Texas Rangers and right-hander Spencer Howard. Upton is hitting .230 with a .319 on-base percentage, 15 home runs, and three stolen bases in 307 plate appearances this season. Jo Adell is starting in left field instead of Upton and is batting fifth. Adell has logged just nine plate appearances with the Angels this year, but already has three hits and a walk. The former top prospect is worth a look as a streaming option in deeper leagues.

Tue Aug 311:50Justin Upton Platooning, Jo Adell To Play Everyday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton will platoon with right fielder Adam Eaton, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group. Upton will start against lefties and play left field. Upton has slashed .222/.371/.500 versus left-handed pitching this season compared to .232/.292/.426 against righties. The decision comes the day of Jo Adell's promotion to the big leagues, with him being given an everyday job in the outfield. Adell will try to justify the move by showcasing his raw power that led to .592 slugging with 23 HRs in 73 minor-league games this season. Fantasy managers need to act accordingly, only rostering Upton in deep and AL-only leagues, as well as keeping Adell as a waiver wire option.

Sat Jul 3114:34Justin Upton Not In The Lineup Against Oakland Saturday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's matchup with the Athletics. This looks to just be a day off for Upton, who has struggled at the plate since coming off the injured list as he's slashing .139/.184/.278 with a 12:2 K:BB ratio over his last nine games. Hopefully the day off will allow Upton to get back on track, and in the meantime Phil Gosselin will get the start in left field and is batting third against Oakland.

Sat Jul 3109:51Justin Upton Picks Up Two Hits Friday
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton recorded two hits in four at-bats with a double and a strikeout during Friday's 2-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics. It was his first multi-hit game since returning from the IL on July 22. Upton is slashing a respectable .232/.316/.452 with 15 HRs, 34 RBI, 42 runs, and three stolen bases. Upton has had a streaky year thus far, with him starting off slow before getting scorching hot prior to his injury. He's been in a slump since his return, however. Fantasy managers can ride his streaks, playing him when he's hot and sitting him otherwise.

Sat Jul 3102:55Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and ... [More]

Thu Jul 2902:14Late-scratch Judge hits tiebreaking single for Yanks in 10th
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Aaron Judge went from being a late scratch to hitting a tiebreaking single in a two-run 10th inning to help the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays for the second straight day, 3-1 on Wednesday night. Judge was taken out of the lineup about 30 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. Although no announcement was made about why, the All-Star right fielder struck out in the fifth pinch-hitting for Estevan Florial. Judge returned to the team Tuesday after going on the COVID-19 injured list July 16. New York also had a big night off the field. The Yankees reached a deal to get All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been announced and was subject to approval of medical records of the players involved. Greg Allen was hit by a pitch from Pete Fairbanks (3-4) leading off the 10th, putting runners on first and second... [More]
Sun Jul 1815:41Top prospect Brandon Marsh gets start in center for Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Marsh is making his major league debut and playing center field for the Los Angeles Angels in Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Marsh is considered the top prospect in the Angels' organization. He was drafted in the second round in 2016 and was batting .382 with two home runs and six RBIs in his last eight games with Triple-A Salt Lake. Manager Joe Maddon said before the game that he hopes Marsh can remain on the roster the rest of the season, even when three-time AL MVP Mike Trout and Justin Upton return from stints on the injured list. “I told (Marsh) don’t think you have to do anything differently. It’s the same game,” he said. Marsh said he was surprised about being called up at this point of the season, especially since he had not been back at Salt Lake that long after missing nearly a month with right shoulder inflammation. Infielder Kean Wong was optioned to Salt Lake to make room for Marsh. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Jul 1420:50Angels sign veteran OF Adam Eaton after White Sox release
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels signed veteran outfielder Adam Eaton two days after he was released by the Chicago White Sox. The Angels announced the move Wednesday. They also designated left-hander Dillon Peters for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The White Sox designated Eaton for assignment July 7 after he batted .201 with five homers and 28 RBIs in 58 games during his return season with Chicago. After a strong start to the year, his production slumped badly from mid-April onward. The 10-year major league veteran also struggled at the plate with the Washington Nationals in 2020, a year after playing well and winning a World Series ring with new Angels teammate Anthony Rendon. Eaton is a career .278 hitter with 65 homers and 317 RBIs across a decade with Arizona, Washington and two stints with the White Sox. Eaton will provide immediate depth in the Angels' injury-plagued outfield. Left fielder Justin Upton has been out since June 22 with a lower bac... [More]
Fri Jul 923:49Shohei Ohtani reaches upper deck in Seattle with 33rd homer
SEATTLE (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s league-leading 33rd home run of the season Friday night put him in rare company in the history of the Seattle Mariners' home ballpark. Ohtani’s solo shot in the third inning off Marco Gonzales soared into the top deck of right field at T-Mobile Park. The Angels' two-way phenom is the sixth player to reach the upper deck of the right field seats since the stadium opened in 1999. MLB’s Statcast projected the homer at 463 feet. Ohtani’s blast left a buzz through the ballpark and caused a couple of fans sitting alone in that section of the stadium to duck as the ball drew closer. It landed above the fifth row of seats before hitting a concrete wall and ricocheting back down into the lower levels. The Angels dugout erupted in excitement and disbelief after Ohtani's left-handed swing. Justin Upton put his hands on his head in shock when it landed in the upper deck. Ohtani is the first player since Albert Pujols to in 2006 to hit 33 or more homers in his first 82 games of a season. He's on pace for 61. The others to have reached the upper deck at T-Mobile Park are Joey Gallo (2020), Daniel Vogelbach (2019), Nomar Mazara (2019), Carlos Delgado (2001) and Mo Vaughn (1999). ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Tue Jul 618:38Anthony Rendon on Angels' injury list for 3rd time this year
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Third baseman Anthony Rendon has been placed on the Los Angeles Angels' injured list for the third time before the All-Star break. Rendon went on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left hamstring strain that occurred Sunday. The Angels recalled infielder Jack Mayfield from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace him. Rendon has struggled with injuries and inconsistent production at the plate throughout the second season of a $245 million, seven-year contract he signed as a free agent to join Los Angeles after winning the World Series in a career year with Washington in 2019. The slugger has played in just 58 of the Angels' 84 games, and he is batting a career-low .240 with six homers — just three since May 3 — and 34 RBIs. He was 11 for 47 with two homers in his final 13 games before his latest injury. Rendon missed 11 games in April with a groin strain. He then missed nine games in May with a bruise after fouling a ball off his left knee. The Angels (42-42) ente... [More]
