Krauss was released by the Tigers to make 40-man roster room for Randy Wolf, Chris Iott of MLive.com reports.

The Tigers recently promoted first base prospect Dean Green to Triple-A Toledo, so it was very likely Krauss had lost his spot on the depth chart as a backup first baseman and was therefore expendable. Krauss is a career .188/.255/.242 hitter in the majors and is leaving his fourth team in two years, so it's hard to see any club offering him anything beyond a minor league contract to fill out their Triple-A roster.

Krauss was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

Krauss was claimed off waivers from the Rays earlier in the month and underperformed even against replacement-level expectations, hitting an anemic .152/.152/.242 in 12 games with Detroit. He could see the majors again if the Tigers need first base or corner outfield depth, but he likely will won't seen as a real option for playing time.

Krauss is out of the lineup Saturday against the Red Sox.

Krauss went 0-for-4 on Friday against Rick Porcello and the Red Sox, and he'll take a seat Saturday with Alex Avila taking over first base duties. He had started three of the last four games at first base for the Tigers, going 2-for-10 in that stretch.

Krauss was formally activated from the paternity list prior to Sunday's game against the Orioles, MLive.com's Chris Iott reports.

Krauss will immediately enter the lineup for the Tigers upon his return, slotting in at first base and and batting second after missing the team's first two games out of the break. With Miguel Cabrera (calf) likely unavailable until August, Krauss could get a sustained trial as a lineup regular, but the early returns aren't encouraging. The 27-year-old is off to a 2-for-18 start to his Tigers career.

He will face off against right-hander Taijuan Walker in his Tigers debut, after coming over from the Rays on a waiver claim Monday. Krauss went just 6-for-45 in 15 games between Anaheim and Tampa Bay to start the year, but he's fared well at Triple-A and it looks like he may be afforded regular starts against right-handed pitching while Miguel Cabrera (calf) is on the shelf.

With the injury to Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers were in need of a first baseman and Krauss fits the bill. Though he's struggled this season, hitting for a .133/.188/.267 slash line in 45 at-bats, the former second round pick in 2009 was hitting extremely well for Triple-A Salt Lake earlier this season, holding a .868 OPS. The team has yet to announce who is being sent down to clear room for the first baseman.

The Rays designated Krauss for assignment Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Krauss was removed from the 40-man roster to open a spot for pitcher Everett Teaford. Krauss' next step is uncertain, but he was optioned to Triple-A Durham earlier in the week, and will remain there if he clears waivers and decides to stick with the Rays.

The 27-year-old went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment by the Angels late last month, but Krauss caught the Rays' attention by batting .290/.423/.435 with Triple-A Salt Lake in June. It seems Tampa has major league plans for Krauss, as Nick Franklin was optioned and Krauss will reportedly be added in his place, though it remains to be seen what kind of role he'll take on.

Krauss is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres.

Krauss will sit for the fifth time since his May 12 recall to the major league club as Chris Iannetta serves as the DH against right-hander Andrew Cashner. While Krauss is just 5-for-35 with the Angels thus far, he may continue to see semi-regular starts with C.J. Cron sent down, though the addition of Kirk Nieuwenhuis complicates things.

Krauss went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in Monday's win over the Padres.

Krauss' line still sits at a paltry .156/.206/.313 over 34 plate appearances, but it appears the Angels are nonetheless willing to roll with him as their primary DH for now. C.J. Cron was sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake after Monday's game, leaving Krauss with no obvious roadblocks to everyday at-bats.

After Krauss went 0-for-9 in the first two games of the series, manager Mike Scioscia will turn to C.J. Cron on Sunday with the hope of generating some production from his DH spot. Krauss was thought to be a solution to the Angels' woes at DH after he posted a .405 on-base percentage in 28 games at Triple-A Salt Lake, but he's notched only three hits in 29 at-bats since his promotion.
