Sun Jul 31 201603:08OF Cole Gillespie designated for assignment Saturday
OF Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment Saturday. The 32-year-old journeyman has played parts of six seasons in the majors, appearing with six organizations -- Diamondbacks, Giants, Cubs, Mariners, Blue Jays and the past two years with the Marlins. His best season was last year, when he posted a career-high .761 OPS in 157 plate appearances. This year, though, he got only 55 plate appearances and had a .645 OPS. That's in line with his .672 career norm, and it just wasn't good enough to stick on this contending club.

LF Cole Gillespie had his first two hits of the season Wednesday in his first start after going 0-for-8 in a pinch-hitting role. He brought in the winning run in the eighth inning during the Marlins' 4-3 win over the Rays. Gillespie's only other RBI of the season came against Tampa Bay on Monday, when he hit a sacrifice fly.

Tue Sep 1 201516:39Gillespie cranked solo home run during Monday's win over Braves
Gillespie cranked a solo home run during Monday's win over the Braves.
Gillespie has been solid in a part time role for the Marlins, batting .301/.347/.451 over 144 plate appearances with a pair of home runs and four stolen bases. He'll continue to see at-bats in the short term, but the playing time opportunities could dry up if/when Christian Yelich is ready to return to an everyday role and Giancarlo Stanton is activated from the DL.
Sun Aug 23 201511:34Gillespie (wrist) back in lineup Sunday against Phillies
Gillespie (wrist) is back in the lineup Sunday against the Phillies, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
A sore left wrist bounced Gillespie from Friday's game early, but after taking Saturday off to rest, it looks like he's good to go. Gillespie will replace Ichiro Suzuki in right field.

Gillespie left Friday's game with a sore left wrist and is considered day-to-day, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Gillespie was hit by an Andres Blanco line drive earlier in Friday's game and has since been replaced by Derek Dietrich in left field. The team has Gillespie listed as day-to-day, so it's possible that he gets back into the lineup during Miami's series against Philadelphia.

Gillespie went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old journeyman's come essentially out of nowhere to post four consecutive multi-hit games, and all of a sudden, he's hitting .309. He makes a lot of contact, so it's not unbelievable that Gillespie could maintain a decent batting average -- not one over .300, but .280-.290 could be reasonable -- but his lack of both power and speed makes him a marginal fantasy asset.
Tue Aug 4 201516:43Gillespie in lineup for Tuesday's game against Mets
Gillespie is in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.
Gillespie will get the start in place of Ichiro Suzuki, and hit second against Mets starter Jon Niese. The sample size is small, but Gillespie has hit southpaws well this season, going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and three RBI.
Sun Jul 26 201513:35Gillespie out of lineup Sunday against Padres
Gillespie is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Gillespie drew outfield starts in each of the Marlins' previous four games, going 1-for-14 with a walk and an RBI. The slump resulted in a nearly 60-point drop in his season batting average, which now sits at .277. The 31-year-old journeyman outfielder doesn't have much of a track record of success at the big-league level, and could be squeezed out of regular at-bats once Giancarlo Stanton (wrist) returns from the DL or Marcell Ozuna comes back from Triple-A.
Sun Jul 12 201512:45Gillespie slugged first home run of season Saturday during Marli...
Gillespie slugged his first home run of the season Saturday during the Marlins 14-3 rout of the Reds.
Gillespie has seen semi-regular at-bats for the Marlins as they cover the absence of Giancarlo Stanton (wrist) and Marcell Ozuna. He's made the most of his opportunities so far, knocking 10 hits, six of which have gone for extra bases, in 30 at bats. The 31-year-old is a career .242/.303/.359 hitter, however, so it doubtful that he'll be able to maintain anything close to his current .333/.375/.600 slash line.
Fri Jul 10 201515:41Gillespie out of lineup Friday against Reds
Gillespie is out of the lineup Friday against the Reds, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Gillespie has earned everyday starts in right field with the Marlins, but will get a day off Friday. Jordany Valdespin will start there in his place, batting eighth for the Marlins.

Gillespie made his second start since being called up by the Marlins last week in Friday's game against the Cubs. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
The Marlins lack better alternatives right now, and it seems likely that Gillespie will head back to the minors once Mike Morse is ready to return, as the Marlins may have to use Morse in the outfield to keep Justin Bour's bat in the lineup on the large side of a platoon at first base.
Sat Jun 27 201512:35Gillespie called up by Marlins on Saturday
Gillespie was called up by the Marlins on Saturday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
With Giancarlo Stanton (hand) landing on the DL, Gillespie will come up to play for his sixth different major league team. The 31-year-old has hit .291 in 247 at-bats with Triple-A New Orleans this season, but he has modest pop and his speed has dwindled in recent years. Further, he will likely see somewhat limited opportunities in a reserve role.

Gillespie signed a minor league contract with the Marlins that includes an invite to spring training.
The 30-year-old outfielder has joined Miami, his fifth different organization since the start of 2013, and will get to attend major league camp for spring training as a non-roster invitee. Considering Gillespie is just a .230/.295/.329 career hitter at the major league level, it seems likely he'll end up playing out most of 2015 as depth in the minors.
Sun Aug 3 201419:57Gillespie (oblique) outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo
Gillespie (oblique) has been outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Placed on the disabled list in early July, Gillespie will head to the minors once he's healthy. The Blue Jays are pleased with the recent performance of fellow outfielders Anthony Gose and Nolan Reimold.
Wed Jul 9 201401:34Cole Gillespie (oblique) placed on DL
Blue Jays placed OF Cole Gillespie on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique.
The injury comes at a bad time, as the Blue Jays were planning to use Gillespie regularly in the DH spot versus lefties. He figures to be sidelined through the end of July.
