OF Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment Saturday. The 32-year-old journeyman has played parts of six seasons in the majors, appearing with six organizations -- Diamondbacks, Giants, Cubs, Mariners, Blue Jays and the past two years with the Marlins. His best season was last year, when he posted a career-high .761 OPS in 157 plate appearances. This year, though, he got only 55 plate appearances and had a .645 OPS. That's in line with his .672 career norm, and it just wasn't good enough to stick on this contending club.

He'll continue to see at-bats in the short term, but the playing time opportunities could dry up if/when Christian Yelich is ready to return to an everyday role and Giancarlo Stanton is activated from the DL.

Gillespie went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old journeyman's come essentially out of nowhere to post four consecutive multi-hit games, and all of a sudden, he's hitting .309. He makes a lot of contact, so it's not unbelievable that Gillespie could maintain a decent batting average -- not one over .300, but .280-.290 could be reasonable -- but his lack of both power and speed makes him a marginal fantasy asset.

Gillespie is in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Gillespie will get the start in place of Ichiro Suzuki, and hit second against Mets starter Jon Niese. The sample size is small, but Gillespie has hit southpaws well this season, going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and three RBI.

The slump resulted in a nearly 60-point drop in his season batting average, which now sits at .277. The 31-year-old journeyman outfielder doesn't have much of a track record of success at the big-league level, and could be squeezed out of regular at-bats once Giancarlo Stanton (wrist) returns from the DL or Marcell Ozuna comes back from Triple-A.

Gillespie has seen semi-regular at-bats for the Marlins as they cover the absence of Giancarlo Stanton (wrist) and Marcell Ozuna. He's made the most of his opportunities so far, knocking 10 hits, six of which have gone for extra bases, in 30 at bats. The 31-year-old is a career .242/.303/.359 hitter, however, so it doubtful that he'll be able to maintain anything close to his current .333/.375/.600 slash line.

Gillespie has earned everyday starts in right field with the Marlins, but will get a day off Friday. Jordany Valdespin will start there in his place, batting eighth for the Marlins.

Gillespie made his second start since being called up by the Marlins last week in Friday's game against the Cubs. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk.

The Marlins lack better alternatives right now, and it seems likely that Gillespie will head back to the minors once Mike Morse is ready to return, as the Marlins may have to use Morse in the outfield to keep Justin Bour's bat in the lineup on the large side of a platoon at first base.

With Giancarlo Stanton (hand) landing on the DL, Gillespie will come up to play for his sixth different major league team. The 31-year-old has hit .291 in 247 at-bats with Triple-A New Orleans this season, but he has modest pop and his speed has dwindled in recent years. Further, he will likely see somewhat limited opportunities in a reserve role.

Gillespie signed a minor league contract with the Marlins that includes an invite to spring training.

The 30-year-old outfielder has joined Miami, his fifth different organization since the start of 2013, and will get to attend major league camp for spring training as a non-roster invitee. Considering Gillespie is just a .230/.295/.329 career hitter at the major league level, it seems likely he'll end up playing out most of 2015 as depth in the minors.

Gillespie (oblique) has been outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo.

Placed on the disabled list in early July, Gillespie will head to the minors once he's healthy. The Blue Jays are pleased with the recent performance of fellow outfielders Anthony Gose and Nolan Reimold.
