Wheeler was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Wheeler once held some promise as a prospect while coming up through the Diamondbacks' system, but it appears his promising numbers in the minors were merely a creation of the Pacific Coast League. He's never experienced much success during his time in the big leagues, producing a .233/.280/.335 line in 225 career plate appearances.

Wheeler was designated for assignment by the Angels on Monday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Orange County Register reports.

The 25-year-old third baseman hit just .232/.281/.375 with the Rockies in 31 games this season, before being designated for assignment and subsequently claimed by the Angels. He hit .326/.373/.402 over 25 games with Triple-A Salt Lake, but it wasn't enough to keep him on the Angels' 40-man roster.

Wheeler has been claimed off waivers by the Angels, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Landing in another organization with adequate depth on the corners, it's unclear how the Angels are going to make the pieces fit on their 25-man roster with the addition of Wheeler.

Though he's known as a high-average hitter, his power numbers improved at Double-A Mobile with 16 home runs in 480 at-bats. Wheeler has enough talent to potentially make an impact down the line for the Diamondbacks and may even get a chance in 2012. If he does get a look, it'll be more for his hitting than defense.
