Mon Mar 21 201118:18D-Backs option C Schmidt to minors
Diamondbacks optioned C Konrad Schmidt to Triple-A Reno; reassigned RHPs Micah Owings and Brian Sweeney and OF Wily Mo Pena to minor league camp.
Schmidt went 4-for-14 (.286) with a pair of homers during exhibition action, but he wasn't going to threaten Henry Blanco for his job. Pena actually played pretty well this spring, too, batting .341 (14-for-41) with one double and three RBI. Perhaps they can convince him to stick around at the Triple-A level.
