Two sources told Adam Rubin of ESPN New York that Kevin Mulvey decided to retire after Saturday's game with Double-A Binghamton.
Mulvey, who coincidentally turned 27 Saturday, has posted a 5.59 ERA over 13 relief appearances with Binghamton this season. The former second-round pick holds a 7.90 ERA over 10 career major league appearances.

Mulvey was released by the Diamondbacks earlier this offseason, but originally drafted by the Mets and traded to the Twins in the Johan Santana deal. The contract does not include an invite to spring training.

Updating a previous item, the Diamondbacks haven't decided who will take Kris Benson's spot in the starting rotation.
It was assumed that Kevin Mulvey, who was recalled on Thursday, would step in, but that's not necessarily the case. If the Diamondbacks decide to reach into the minors, Billy Buckner or Cesar Valdez are possibilities.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Kevin Mulvey from Triple-A Reno.
He was a logical choice to fill the vacant spot in the rotation left by the perpetually-injured Kris Benson. Mulvey, who turns 25 in May, posted a 4.05 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 20 innings with Reno. The former second-round pick has an ugly 8.14 ERA over eight career major league appearances (four starts).
