Billy Buckner gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings to take a loss to the Cubs in his season debut Saturday.
It was the 24th career major league start for Buckner, who debuted with the Royals back in 2007. He might remain in the Padres rotation for now, but even with Petco supporting him, he doesn't rate as much of an NL-only pickup.

Billy Buckner lasted three innings, allowing three runs on seven hits in a no-decision against the Tigers on Wednesday.
Buckner was recalled when Jason Vargas went on the disabled list, and the right-hander was largely ineffective in his first start since being called up. He allowed two home runs among his seven hits, and he didn't strike out a batter in his three innings. With Vargas still sidelined for the foreseeable future the Angels will need an arm to continue making starts, but it remains to be seen whether Buckner will be the one to get another turn in the rotation after Wednesday's showing.
