Mon Jan 10 201123:14Former No. 1 pick Kris Benson retires
Kris Benson told Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com that he has decided to retire.
"I'm done," said Benson. "I decided pretty much after this past season that I wasn't going to pursue anything. I've been putting way too much into it and not getting enough out of it, as far as the rehab, working out, training, and then not getting the type of results I expect from myself." Benson, now 36 years old, had a 5.14 ERA over three starts with the Diamondbacks last season, but didn't make an appearance after April due to more shoulder problems. The former 1996 No. 1 overall pick calls it a career with a 70-75 record to go along with a 4.42 ERA.

Tue Sep 7 201012:23Benson (shoulder) shut down for rest of 2010
Kris Benson (shoulder) has been shut down for the rest of the season.
Benson wasn't pitching very well at Triple-A Reno anyway. He had an opportunity to rebuild his value this season in Arizona but made only three starts before suffering a shoulder strain. The righty hit the disabled list in April with a 5.14 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. We suppose he'll try again in 2011.

Mon Aug 9 201011:33Benson looking better in outings at Triple-A
Kris Benson (shoulder) has allowed just two total runs in his last two rehab starts for Triple-A Reno.
Benson is building up his pitch count with an eye on returning to the Diamondbacks' starting rotation in late August. He has been out with a right shoulder strain since late April and had a 5.14 ERA through his first three starts before hitting the disabled list. He's not a fantasy guy.

Sat Jul 31 201010:17Benson (shoulder) transferred to 60-day DL
Diamondbacks transferred RHP Kris Benson from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
This was just a procedural move to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Benson has been out since late April with a right shoulder strain. He's nearing another rehab assignment.
Sun Jul 25 201009:18Benson throws another bullpen session
Kris Benson (shoulder) threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Saturday.
It was his second session since his rehab assignment was shut down. Manager Kirk Gibson said that Benson would need to reach 100 pitches before he would be ready to go back out on a rehab assignment. "I want to make sure he's good and healthy, he's resilient," Gibson said. "So we wouldn't want to change anything around for that unless we knew that he was going to be durable."

Kris Benson (shoulder) was given a second round of cortisone shots in his right shoulder on Friday.
Benson, who is currently on the disabled list with inflammation in the capsule of his right shoulder, made four rehab starts with Triple-A Reno before suffering a setback earlier this month. "It turns out it was a little more serious than I thought when it first happened," said Benson. He's expected to play catch on Saturday before progressing to bullpen sessions. The oft-injured right-hander will need another minor league rehab stint before being activated from the disabled list.

Fri Jun 18 201011:35Benson (shoulder) given time off
Kris Benson (shoulder) was recently given a few days off during his minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.
"I don't think he's been feeling bad," Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch said, "but I don't think he's been feeling perfect." Benson, who was placed on the disabled list last month with a right shoulder strain, is scheduled to make his next rehab start on Saturday.

Mon May 24 201023:22Benson knocked around in first rehab start
Kris Benson (shoulder) was pounded for six runs over two innings in his first minor league rehab start for Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Not the most encouraging return. He gave up seven hits -- including two home runs -- while throwing just 32 of 55 pitches for strikes. Needless to say, he'll need to show more progress before the Diamondbacks even think of bringing him back.

Fri May 21 201023:59Benson (shoulder) to make rehab start on Mon
Kris Benson (shoulder) will make a minor league rehab start with Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Benson was given the go-ahead after a 45-pitch throwing session on Wednesday. He has been on the shelf since April 28 due to a strained right shoulder. The Diamondbacks shouldn't count on him given his injury history, but it never hurt to have options.

Wed May 19 201021:33Benson tosses three innings in spring game
Kris Benson (shoulder) tossed three innings Wednesday in an extended spring training game in Tucson, Arizona.
Benson looked good and is expected to throw a lengthier simulated game in about five days. He's been sidelined since straining a muscle in his right shoulder on April 28 and is hoping to return around early June. The right-hander had a 5.14 ERA through his first three starts of the 2010 season.

Sat May 15 201016:56Benson has begun throwing bullpeners
Kris Benson (shoulder) has begun throwing bullpen sessions.
Next up will be simulated games, then he will head out on a minor league rehab assignment. If Benson avoids setbacks, he could be back with the D'Backs in very early June. Of course, that's nothing to get excited about -- the righty had a 5.14 EA through his first three starts.

Fri Apr 30 201014:16MRI negative on Benson's shoulder
An MRI on Kris Benson's injured shoulder revealed no structural damage, according to the Diamondbacks.
The plan is for Benson to resume throwing next week, so perhaps he'll have a chance of rejoining Arizona's rotation before the end of May.
Thu Apr 29 201011:52D'Backs place Benson on DL
Diamondbacks placed RHP Kris Benson on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness.
It was only a matter of when. Benson was scheduled to undergo an MRI after leaving Wednesday's game against the Rockies after just two innings because of discomfort in his shoulder. He heads to the disabled list with a 5.14 ERA through three starts.
Wed Apr 28 201019:50Benson to undergo MRI, likely headed for DL
Kris Benson is set to undergo an MRI Wednesday night on his sore shoulder.
Benson was lifted from Wednesday's start against the Rockies after complaining of shoulder discomfort. It all depends on what the MRI reveals, but MLB.com's Steve Gilbert suspects that the right-hander is headed for the 15-day disabled list. Billy Buckner, Cesar Valdez or Kevin Mulvey could fill in.

Wed Apr 28 201016:50D'Backs' Benson leaves with sore shoulder
Kris Benson came out of his start Wednesday with a sore right shoulder.
Sad news for Benson, who has been battling his shoulder for years. Expect him to land on the disabled list, with Cesar Valdez perhaps replacing him in the rotation. Billy Buckner and Kevin Mulvey are alternatives, but Valdez has been the best of Reno's starters to date.
Sat Apr 24 201001:08D'Backs' Benson earns win over Phillies
Kris Benson earned a victory Friday by allowing three runs -- two earned -- in six innings versus the Phillies.
That's a nice outing for a right-hander against the powerful Phillies lineup. Benson struck out five and walked none, allowing him to escape with acceptable damage even though he allowed eight hits. He's still not a very good bet in NL-only leagues.
Sat Apr 17 201023:42Benson allows two runs over 6 frames in loss
In his first start of the season, Kris Benson allowed two runs over six innings in a loss Saturday to the Padres.
Benson was worse than he appeared, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out only one. Still, he was as good as Arizona could have expected. The 35-year-old right-hander, after all, produced a 8.46 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 22 1/3 innings last season for the Rangers before banishment.
Sat Apr 17 201016:19Benson summoned to make start against Padres
Diamondbacks purchased the contract of RHP Kris Benson from Triple-A Reno.
He is scheduled to start Saturday against the Padres in San Diego, beating out Billy Buckner and Kevin Mulvey for the assignment. The 35-year-old right-hander produced a 8.46 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 22 1/3 innings last season for the Rangers and hasn't made 30 starts in a season since 2006. Even deep NL-only players should look elsewhere for roster reinforcement.
Thu Apr 15 201015:57Benson to start for D'Backs on Saturday
Kris Benson is scheduled to join the Diamondbacks' rotation to start Saturday against the Padres.
He beat out Billy Buckner and Kevin Mulvey for the assignment. It will be Benson's first major league appearance since last June 6 as a member of the Rangers. The 35-year-old right-hander tallied an ugly 8.46 ERA and 2.01 WHIP in 22 1/3 innings last season and hasn't made 30 starts in a season since 2006. He obviously shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.

Tue Apr 13 201016:17Benson moving closer to D'Backs' rotation?
Kris Benson allowed two unearned runs in five innings with Triple-A Reno on Monday night.
The Diamondbacks will need a fifth starter on April 17 and Benson is starting to look like the favorite for the assignment. Billy Buckner, the other likely internal option, was knocked around for seven runs in five innings with Triple-A Reno on Sunday. The one advantage that Buckner has over Benson is that he is on the 40-man roster. It's possible Brandon Webb could be placed on the 60-day disabled list in order to make room for Benson, but that would only be if the Diamondbacks feel he would not be available until June.
