Fri Feb 115:32Jazz center Rudy Gobert moved to tears by All-Star snub
Utah center and reigning NBA defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert was moved to tears Friday when discussing his disappointment about not being selected for the All-Star Game, saying his omission suggests that excelling on defense isn't valued.Gobert is fourth in the NBA in blocks per game, and fifth in the league in rebounds per game. He's also shooting a league-high 65 percent from 2-point range this season."I feel disrespected," Gobert told reporters in Salt Lake City. "Disrespectful, not only towards me but towards the team, the organization and towards the game. All the coaches preach about defense. Every day they talk about defense, they talk about how important it is to get stops in order to win basketball games. And when it's time to vote, they they're not able to reward the best defensive player in the world."Gobert was not selected by the league's coaches as an All-Star reserve; those picks were unveiled Thursday, though the vote totals were not disclosed. He also finished... [More]
Thu Jan 3122:32Davis picked as an All-Star reserve; 4 first-timers make it
New Orleans has an All-Star for the sixth straight year. That is, unless he gets traded first.Pelicans standout Anthony Davis — only three days removed from having his trade request made known publicly — was one of the 14 players announced Thursday as reserves for the All-Star Game in Charlotte. Davis wants to be swapped out of New Orleans by the Feb. 7 trade deadline, so it remains unclear if his uniform for the All-Star contest on Feb. 17 will bear a Pelicans logo or not. It's the sixth consecutive All-Star nod for Davis. The Pelicans aren't sure if he'll play for them again, though there's also no guarantee that he gets traded by next week either."That's something that will obviously have to be discussed about what's best for him and what's best for our team," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. The other Western Conference reserves were Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, Denver's Nikola Jokic, Portland's Damian Lillard, Golden State's Klay Thompson, San Antonio's LaMarcus Aldridge a... Sat Jan 2607:28Jazz mascot nets bat on court before game vs. Timberwolves
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — It took a bear — Jazz Bear — to catch a bat and leave the high-flying hijinks to the NBA players.A wayward bat flew around the court inside the Vivint Smart Home Arena about an hour before Utah's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, interrupting the pregame shooting routines of the likes of Jazz stars Donovan Mitchell and Ricky Rubio. The few thousand fans in the building took turns cheering and then groaning while watching the flying mammal zip around the arena and elude several security guards and an on-court employee armed with a net.Jazz Bear took a break from entertaining the crowd by taking a few swings himself before finally capturing it — with nothing but net.Fans then cheered wildly as the proud mascot strolled off the court with the big catch."That was scary," Mitchell said after Utah's 106-101 victory . "I was not cool with that at all. I'm glad the Bear got him because I would not have finished my warmup. I would have gone to locker room if he was still flying around out there."The whole thing quickly became a social media hit, and Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma appropriately tweeted : "Where is Manu when you need him."That, of course, is former San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobili, who famously swatted a bat to the hardwood and captured it in the middle of game against Sacramento on Halloween night in 2009.___More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Mon Dec 24 201813:03NBA's Christmas lineup headlined by LeBron vs. Warriors
There's no NBA Finals rematch this year on Christmas. Not technically, anyway. It's LeBron James vs. the Golden State Warriors for the fourth consecutive year on Dec. 25, though James will be wearing a Los Angeles Lakers uniform this time.It was a predictable matchup. It isn't, however, a break from tradition. That's one of the biggest misnomers about the NBA and the schedule. An NBA Finals rematch is not common, not the norm, not a guarantee for the last two teams that were standing the previous season. The league has crowned a champion every year since 1947, and the tradition of Christmas Day games started later that same year. (They've been an annual fixture since, with the exception of 1998, when a lockout didn't allow that season to begin until February.)But there have been only nine NBA Finals rematches on Dec. 25. The recent Golden State-Cleveland history may make it seem like more.James has been in five Finals rematches on Christmas, all since 2011: Miami vs. Dallas that year, Ok... [More]

Wed Nov 28 201823:05AP Source: Cavs send Korver to Jazz for G Burks, 2 picks
CLEVELAND (AP) — Kyle Korver is getting another shot with a contender. The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to trade Korver, one of the best deep outside shooters in NBA history, to the Utah Jazz, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday. In exchange for Korver, the Cavs will get guard Alec Burks — and his expiring contract — along with two future second-round draft picks, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the swap has to be approved by the NBA. The trade might not become official until Thursday. For Korver, Cleveland will get Utah's 2020 second-round selection along with Washington's 2021 second-rounder. The Cavs also receive an asset in Burks' expiring contract worth $11.2 million, something they might be able to use in another deal."I was surprised," Jazz star Donovan Mitchell said of the deal that was agreed to shortly before Utah's 101-91 victory in Brooklyn. Mon Oct 15 201814:16Jazz pushing to join NBA elite with familiar faces in place
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Bringing back a roster virtually unchanged from the end of last season isn't intended to be a sign that the Utah Jazz have embraced the status quo.The Jazz want to send a much different message. This is a team eager to prove last season's strong finish was simply a snapshot of a climb toward becoming an elite team. One thing is certain: Utah will not be sneaking up on anyone this time around, so an even better encore performance will be needed."That focus for me is maybe the unspoken thing when you talk about a team that has guys back and all of that," coach Quin Snyder said. "I want to see them get better. I want to see guys get better individually and I want to see us collectively get better."Donovan Mitchell lessened the blow of Gordon Hayward's departure, averaging a team-high 20.5 points per game during a breakout rookie season. He was even better in the playoffs, averaging 28.5 points on 46.2 percent shooting to help power a first-round series win over Okla... [More]
Mon Sep 24 201819:27Utah Jazz open training camp focused on internal development
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah didn't make any major offseason moves but fans shouldn't mistake that for a sign the Jazz are satisfied with the status quo. With the start of training camp, Utah players and coaches are echoing the same message: Continuity doesn't equal complacency. The Jazz are focused on maximizing potential they showed toward the end of last season — with a roster that has returned mostly intact — once the regular season starts in mid-October."I don't want to pick up where we left off," coach Quin Snyder told reporters at the team's media day Monday. "That implies it's the same group beginning to do something. This is a new journey. We can take with us the experience. We can take with us the chemistry and the things we learned. But this is a new team."Nothing encapsulates that attitude better than the work various Jazz players have put in while preparing for the season.Derrick Favors and Jae Crowder dropped weight over the summer to improve their mobility and quicknes... Mon Sep 24 201818:57Injured Thunder defensive stopper Roberson closer to return
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Thunder defensive stopper Andre Roberson is inching closer to being able to play. The Oklahoma City swingman missed the second half of last season with a ruptured left patellar tendon. He expects to be cleared for contact soon and back to full speed "around December.""There's a return to basketball and there's a return to performance, being back to my elite self on the defensive end and me just being cleared to play basketball is two different things," he said Monday at media day. "And it's going to be a process to kind of get back to where I was, just me being comfortable with my leg again and me getting back into the rhythm of basketball sitting out so long."General manager Sam Presti shied away from a timetable when asked about Roberson last week."I can't tell you exactly when that's going to be," Presti said. "We don't think we're going to be without him very long, but again, this is medicine. This is human performance. This is body. So sitting up here saying,... [More]
Mon Jul 2 201820:03AP source: Favors returns to Utah on 2-year deal
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Upon hearing that power forward Derrick Favors was returning to Utah, his Jazz teammates Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert reacted by quickly making similar requests. They want him to buy dinner.Favors surely can do that now. With the NBA still processing the ramifications of LeBron James going to the Los Angeles Lakers and more than $1 billion in new deals getting struck on the first full day of free agency, deals continued Monday — and Favors was one of the day's big winners. He agreed to a two-year, $36 million deal to return to the Jazz, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press."Let's get it!!!" Favors wrote on Twitter, not long after news of the deal broke. The Jazz went to Atlanta over the weekend to sit down with Favors, and Utah general manager Dennis Lindsey had said going into the negotiating period that the team felt good about retaining all three of their free agents — Favors, Dante Exum and Raul Neto. The biggest domino in th... Wed Jun 27 201820:02Grayson Allen ready to embrace new role with Jazz
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ongoing roster turnover from one season to the next forced Grayson Allen to become a basketball chameleon at Duke. He adapted to changes as they occurred and took on a new role each season. Those experiences helped Allen get ready for whatever role is required of him as he embarks on his rookie season with the Utah Jazz."I've never been just a single focal point of an offense since I've been in college," Allen said during his introductory news conference Wednesday. "I know how to play with other talented guys. I know how to play with other really good guys and that's what you're going to have to do in the NBA, especially coming in as a rookie and coming into a team who's already a playoff team."Allen had to adapt his game over four seasons with the Blue Devils as he adjusted to the influx of one-and-done prospects. Nine different teammates were first round NBA draft picks and four others were second-rounders.The turnover opened the door for Allen to go from being... [More]
