Nick Stavinoha (knee) struck out as a pinch-hitter Saturday.
Of course he did. Stavinoha had two fairly heroic home runs this season, but he is not ready to play a major role on a big league club and shouldn't be on the Cardinals' Opening Day roster next season. The big 28-year-old has a .258/.288/.342 batting line and 28 strikeouts in 120 at-bats this year.

Nick Stavinoha (shoulder) has begun a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis.
Stavinoha went 1-for-3 with an RBI double on Monday against rehabbing Rangers starter Rich Harden. The outfielder should be back to full health by the end of the week, if not sooner, but the Cardinals just activated Ryan Ludwick from the disabled list and Jon Jay is playing too well to be demoted. Stavinoha may be activated from the DL then quickly optioned back to Triple-A.

Stavinoha suffered the injury before the All-Star break and was not feeling well enough when he showed up to Busch Stadium on Thursday afternoon. He's hit .256/.295/.344 in 90 at-bats this year as a pinch-hitter and sometimes-fill-in for injured right fielder Ryan Ludwick.
Fri Apr 9 201023:45Stavinoha's two-run shot leads Cards to win
Nick Stavinoha blasted a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Friday to lead the Cardinals over the Brewers 5-4.
Stavinoha doesn't exactly fit on the Cards' roster, considering they have a solid trio of outfielders and a few worthy backups in Joe Mather and Felipe Lopez, but you can't deny heroics. He was 5-for-15 as a pinch-hitter last year and seems to be embracing the role already in 2010.
