Thu Apr 2 201515:10Penny reassigned to minor league camp Thursday
Penny was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
The veteran right-hander is reportedly OK with the move, saying that he understands it's better for him to start at Triple-A Charlotte and log as many innings as possible. Penny struggled in his five appearances (three starts) with the major league team this spring, giving up 12 earned run on 24 hits (.375 BAA) and four walks, with nine strikeouts over 15.2 innings.

Penny was scratched from Wednesday's spring training start due to an illness, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Penny's illness shouldn't cause him to miss extended time, but he will skip at least one start Wednesday, and his status as a member of the rotation is very tentative. While it's possible he'll take the first turn in the rotation in place of Chris Sale, it doesn't appear like he will last very long in that role.

Penny struck out four over two one-run innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday in the White Sox's Cactus League Opener.
Penny was the first reliever out of the 'pen after starter Jose Quintana threw his two frames. Although it was the first exhibition game of the spring, Penny still faced MLB-quality batters and struck out a side of Yasmani Grandal, Howie Kendrick, and Andre Ethier. Penny is in the running for a spot-starter/long relief role, so Wednesday's outing was a nice start.

Pitching coach Don Cooper said Penny should receive more looks in camp in the wake of Chris Sale's foot injury, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Penny has only made four starts since 2012, but the White Sox's rotation depth is awfully thin in the wake of Sale's downing and the hesitance to push top prospect Carlos Rodon too quickly. He could conceivably make the big league club as a spot starter if he can prove his stuff this spring.
Tue Dec 16 201417:37Penny agreed to minor league contract with White Sox on Tuesday
Penny agreed to a minor league contract with the White Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
Penny will head to Chicago after finishing last season with the Marlins. He could compete for a starting spot during spring training, but is a long shot to break camp in the White Sox's rotation.
Thu Oct 30 201413:23Penny has elected to become free agent
Penny has elected to become a free agent, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports.
The Marlins took a flyer on Penny in June, signing him to a minor league deal. He recorded a 3.05 ERA in 38.1 total minor league innings but did not translate that success to the big leagues. Though he went 2-1 in eight appearances (four starts), Penny posted a 6.58 ERA and allowed 19 earned runs on 34 hits.

Penny picked up his second win of the season Monday, hurling six innings of two-run ball against the Brewers.
Penny allowed four hits and three walks with just one strikeout, but was largely able to limit the damage as his offense teed off on Yovani Gallardo. It was a strong bounce-back performance for Penny whose rotation spot looked shaky after he lasted just three innings in his previous start; injuries have allowed him an opportunity to stay in the mix. Penny is lined up to take the hill Friday against the Phillies, but Henderson Alvarez (oblique) availability could alter the Marlins' plans.
Fri Sep 5 201409:00Penny may be out of rotation following disastrous start Tuesday
Penny may be out of the rotation following a disastrous start Tuesday, the Miami Herald reports.
Manager Mike Redmond failed to shed light on the situation when asked, saying "that's definitely a question mark." Penny tossed just 57 pitches Tuesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. The Marlins are likely in need of a starter Sunday to potentially fill Henerson Alvarez' (oblique) spot and again next Tuesday. Brad Hand, who has shuffled between the bullpen and rotation, remains an option along with recent callups Andrew Heaney and Anthony DeSclafani.

Penny lasted just three innings Tuesday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out two in a loss to the visiting Mets.
The veteran righty got the hook after only 57 pitches. This was just Penny's third start this season, and he's now the owner of an ugly 6.61 ERA and 1.96 WHIP in 2014, albeit in limited action (16.1 innings). Look for the 36-year-old to turn in a better effort in his next scheduled start against Milwaukee on Monday.
Sat Aug 30 201417:59Penny will start Tuesday against Mets
Penny will start Tuesday against the Mets, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Thursday's off day allowed the Marlins to go with a four-man rotation this week, and it will be Penny, and not Brad Hand, who steps in as the No. 5 starter Tuesday. Penny held the Reds to one run on four hits over five innings in his first start for the big club back on Aug. 9, but he's given up seven runs in 8.1 innings since.
Thu Aug 21 201409:00Penny will remain in bullpen
Penny will remain in the bullpen, the Miami Herald reports.
Manager Mike Redmond announced that Brad Hand will get the starting nod Sunday in Colorado, leaving Penny in long relief. The 36-year-old right-hander worked a pair of starts for the Marlins, his first major league action since 2012, but will need to find a new role with the team to continue his comeback. He holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 10 innings this year.

Penny will be available out of the Marlins' bullpen over the next several days as his role for the remainder of the season is decided, the Miami Herald reports.
With Henderson Alvarez and Jarred Cosart making successful returns from injury this week, the Marlins are left with one rotation spot for Penny and Brad Hand, with the other moving to the pen. Penny has gone five innings in each of his first two starts with the Fish, allowing five earned runs and a poor 6:7 K:BB ratio. Even if Penny manages to hang on to his spot, there is limited long term appeal.

Penny allowed four runs and five hits in five innings against Arizona on Thursday. He issued three walks and struck out three.
Penny has been decent in two starts for Miami, although his low strikeout rate doesn't make him very appealing. His next start isn't scheduled yet, but he's likely to face Texas at home.

Penny got the win in his 2014 debut with the Marlins on Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks over five innings, striking out three.
The Reds helped ease the baserunner pressure on Penny by getting a runner thrown out at home plate. The end result (one earned run and a win) look good, but that poor walk rate will catch up to Penny against better lineups.

The Marlins will purchase Penny's contract before Saturday's game, which he will start against the Reds, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Taking the rotation spot of the DFA'd Jacob Turner, Penny joins the Marlins after compiling a 2.28 ERA and 1.287 WHIP over 27.2 innings at Triple-A New Orleans this season.

Penny holds a 2.28 ERA in five starts for Triple-A New Orleans and the Miami Herald indicates that he could be in the mix for the rotation spot vacated by Jacob Turner.
With Brad Hand pitching well and Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) hoping to avoid an extended stay on the disabled list, the Marlins may not have a rotation vacancy for long, but they are at least in need of a starter Saturday against the Reds. Penny fizzled out as a long reliever during his last stint in the majors in 2012, notching a 6.11 ERA and 1.82 WHIP over 28 innings for the Giants. He's thrown well in the minors thus far as he attempts to get back to the big leagues and remains a name to keep on file.
Wed Jul 9 201413:25Brad Penny to make two more minors starts
Brad Penny will make at least two starts for Triple-A New Orleans before the Marlins consider promoting him.
Penny allowed two runs over six innings in his last start for High-A Jupiter, though that was after he yielded four runs over 4 2/3 frames in his first outing. The veteran righty has an opt-out date of July 31 in his contract, so he'll likely try to catch on with another organization if the Fish don't promote him by then.

Wed Jun 18 201414:24Marlins ink Brad Penny to minor league deal
Marlins signed RHP Brad Penny to a minor league contract.
Penny will receive a prorated $800,000 if he makes the big league roster with a chance for more in incentives. Penny was released by the Royals during spring training after he gave up seven runs on 13 hits and a walk over his first four innings. He posted a 6.11 ERA over 28 relief innings for the Giants in 2012 before sitting out the 2013 season.

Tue Apr 22 201409:52Penny holding showcase for teams on Thu.
Brad Penny will throw for multiple teams on Thursday in Kansas City.
Penny was released by the Royals during spring training after he gave up seven runs on 13 hits and a walk over his first four innings. He also punched a wall with his left (non-throwing) hand, though it appears that he managed to avoid a serious injury. The veteran right-hander might land a minor league deal somewhere, but he's a long way from making it back to the majors.

Fri Mar 7 201415:10Brad Penny injures hand punching wall
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Brad Penny injured his left (non-throwing) hand when he punched a wall following an appearance Thursday.
It appears that was the main reason he was released, though the fact that he gave up seven runs on thirteen hits and a walk over his first four Cactus League innings didn't help. It's not clear whether Penny's hand is injured enough to keep him from pitching. Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported previously that the righty was released so he'd have time to catch on with another club.
