RHP Kyle Lohse, who was designated for assignment by Texas on Tuesday, declined an outright assignment and is now a free agent.

RHP Kyle Lohse was designated for assignment. Lohse lost both starts with Texas after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Round Rock on July 9, allowing 13 runs in 9 1/3 innings. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Lohse to the minor leagues.

RHP Kyle Lohse gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings, getting the loss in an 8-6 setback to the Angels Tuesday. The Rangers gave Lohse leads of 3-0 and 5-4, but he surrendered two three-run homers to Angels DH Albert Pujols, spelling his demise. "It was a challenge for Kyle in a couple innings," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Three walks, all of them scored. The two home runs by Pujols. The three walks and the home runs were really the challenge for us."

RHP Kyle Lohse, who had his contract purchased before the game to make the start for Texas, allowed six runs on nine hits in his five innings. Lohse became the first Texas starter to pitch at least five innings in the last eight games. The seven-game stretch of Texas starters pitching less than five innings had matched Colorado (2012) for the longest streak in the last 20 years. Lohse said he had some tightness in the right side in the first inning but tried to pitch through it. "Obviously I didn't have a very good fastball and I tried to make do with what I had," he said. "The tough thing was I got beat several times on my fourth pitch, which was the curveball. I didn't really get into the game plan the way I wanted to."

RHP Kyle Lohse signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers on Saturday and will join Triple-A Round Rock in Alburquerque on Sunday. He'll be activated when he's ready to start, which is expected to be in the next few days. Lohse, 37, went 5-13 last year for Milwaukee with a 5.85 ERA and has 147 wins in his career.

Lohse allowed one run on one hit, walking two and striking out four over three innings to register a save in the Brewers' 10-3 win against Washington on Friday night.

It was Lohse's first save in a career that dates back to 2001. In the process, he dropped his ERA to as still abysmal 6.04 on the season - the reason he was removed from the rotation earlier this month and moved to the bullpen. If you had him in your lineup, take the save, but don't expect many more any time soon.

Lohse has been removed from the Brewers' rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports.

Lohse's 6.31 ERA ranked second worst behind only Kyle Kendrick among qualified starters this season, so the fact that he was removed from the rotation does not come as a surprise. It is a bit surprising that the Brewers did not designate Lohse for assignment, as it is difficult to see his mediocre arsenal being very effective out of the bullpen. Tyler Cravy, who was called up earlier this week, will start Friday against the Cardinals and has a chance to stick in the Brewers' rotation going forward.

Lohse owns the second-worst ERA -- 6.31 -- among qualified starters this season, and as a result, he has lost his rotation slot to rookie Tyler Cravy. A 15-year veteran, the 36-year-old Lohse may be approaching the end of his career. He has compiled a 147-141 record, 4.33 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 440 games (416 starts) with the Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and Brewers. He has given up more hits (152) and earned runs (87) than any pitcher in baseball this season, and has not allowed fewer than four runs in any of his last seven outings. Lohse will most likely be used in low-leverage, long-relief work out of the Milwaukee bullpen for the duration of this season. The Brewers entered Thursday with a 46-63 record.

Lohse's rotation spot will be discussed after taking his 13th loss of the season Sunday, allowing nine hits and four earned runs over 4.1 innings, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Another poor outing spiked Lohse's ERA to 6.31, as he's now allowed at least one home run in each of his last five starts. The 36-year-old is having one of the worst seasons of his career, as he's now tied his career-worst loss total. If the veteran allows four more home runs, he'll match his worst performance ever in that category as well. Given the recent production, it's no surprise that the team is evaluating his rotation spot, as the rebuilding Brewers may eventually look to see what they have in some of their young arms instead.

Lohse allowed four runs on five hits and three walks over 6.2 innings in his 12th loss Monday against San Francisco.

Lohse has now gone six games since his last quality start. He allowed a home run for the fourth consecutive start and the 11th time in his past 12 outings. Monday's underwhelming outing nonetheless lowered his ERA to 6.24.

The Brewers will go with six starters this week with Wily Peralta returning from the DL, but it doesn't appear to be a long-term plan. "Just for this run, we'll have six men," manager Craig Counsell said. "Then we'll see where we stand."

The Brewers are hoping to trade components of their starting rotation by Friday's deadline, Lohse included. If nobody from the rotation is dealt, Lohse could possibly lose his job on merit.

Lohse (5-11) was tagged for five runs on 10 hits and three walks over five innings Wednesday in a loss to Cleveland.

Fantasy owners have come to expect ineffective outings from Lohse, and this one was no exception -- his third consecutive five-inning start and the eighth time in his last 11 games that he's allowed four or more runs. At this point, he's practically unstartable in nearly any fantasy format, and if you play daily fantasy leagues, it's never a bad move to stack hitters against him.

Lohse took the loss Monday, allowing four runs in five innings against the Braves.

The veteran has been hit especially hard the last two games, allowing 20 hits over 11.1 innings. Lohse has had one of his worst seasons this year, posting a 6.29 ERA. His final first-half start comes this weekend against the Dodgers.

Lohse (5-9) picked up the win Wednesday in Philadelphia despite giving up four runs on nine hits and two walks in 6.1 innings. He struck out four.

That's consecutive outings now in which Lohse has given up four runs, but ridden a wave of offense to a victory. Unfortunately, his quality outings have been few and far between, and the Brewers can't always be counted on for nine- and 10-run offensive outbursts. It's hard even to stream Lohse at this point, but he does draw a Freddie Freeman-less Atlanta offense next week.

Brian Dozier homered off Lohse to open the game, and the right-hander later served up a two-run shot to Trevor Plouffe, but the Brewers' offense powered Lohse to his first win since May 15. Lohse has now given up at least one home run in seven consecutive outings and 19 long balls this season (second-most in MLB). His 6.28 ERA is the worst among qualifiers.

Lohse turned in a quality start Saturday in Coors Field but still lost his ninth game of the season, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings, striking out five.

The big blow was a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon, the 17th blast Lohse has allowed in just 85.2 innings this season. Until he finds a way to keep more balls in the park, he'll have a hard time chipping away at his ghastly 6.30 ERA. His next start will come on Friday, at home to the Twins.
