Wed Nov 20 201315:23Carpenter tells Cardinals he will retire
Chris Carpenter has officially informed the Cardinals that he will retire.
An expected decision. Carpenter attempted to make a comeback earlier this year, but had to shut things down after feeling renewed numbness in his throwing hand. The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner call it a career with a 144-94 lifetime record to go along with a 3.76 ERA. He is expected to remain with the organization in a yet-to-be announced position.

Tue Nov 5 201311:03Cardinals to offer Carpenter front office gig
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak will offer Chris Carpenter a front office role or another job elsewhere in the organization.
Carpenter will retire this offseason due to injuries. "I don't want to ... guess what he was trying to tell me or read the tea leaves," Mozeliak said. "In time, we'll all sit down and talk. ... I welcome that conversation. We touched on some things before the season ended, but obviously with everything going on in October, we never really ironed anything out." The 38-year-old right-hander won the National League Cy Young Award in 2005 and possesses two World Series rings (from 2006 and 2011).

Sun Oct 13 201316:29Carpenter, 38, planning to retire this winter
Chris Carpenter's agent, Bob LaMonte, told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that his client is retiring.
"Chris basically came back from five career-ending surgeries," said LaMonte. "I don't think you'll ever see anyone do that again. He had a sixth one and it was too many. He had a great career, a great human being." Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said this weekend that the door is open for Carpenter to assume a role in the front office. The 38-year-old right-hander won the National League Cy Young Award in 2005 and possesses two World Series rings (from 2006 and 2011). He can get a third this year if the Cards go the distance.

Mon Aug 5 201317:24Carpenter not optimistic about playing in '13
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) said Monday that he's not currently throwing and isn't optimistic about pitching this season.
Carpenter wasn't originally expected to pitch at all this season, but he managed to ramp up a throwing program and even go out on a minor league rehab assignment. However, he shut things down late last month after feeling renewed numbness in his pitching hand. It sounds like a comeback will have to wait until 2014, if at all.

Tue Jul 23 201316:26Carpenter (shoulder) halts rehab assignment
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) has halted his rehab assignment.
"Going to take a step back," the veteran right-hander told reporters on Tuesday afternoon at Busch Stadium. Carpenter was shelled for four runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings this past Saturday at Triple-A Memphis and had a familiar feeling of numbness in his pitching hand. There is no longer a timetable for his return.

Mon Jul 22 201308:45Carpenter (shoulder) has a 'long way to go'
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) acknowledged this weekend that he still has a "long way to go."
Carpenter allowed four runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings Saturday at Triple-A Memphis. It was his second minor league rehab start. "I have a long way to go before I can get outs up there," the veteran righty told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "If I can't get outs down here, never mind getting outs up there. I didn't feel like I was as sharp as I needed to be or should have been. It wasn't what I was looking for.

Sat Jul 20 201320:23Chris Carpenter gets roughed up in Triple-A
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) allowed four runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings Saturday in his rehab start for Triple-A Memphis.
He struck out two and walked two in the 74-pitch outing. It wasn't the kind of performance that's likely to get him right back into the major league rotation. At least one more rehab start is going to be necessary.

Thu Jul 18 201312:13Chris Carpenter moving rehab to AAA Memphis
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) will shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Memphis this Saturday.
Carpenter allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings in his rehab debut Monday with Double-A Springfield, but he flashed good velocity and reported no physical issues. The veteran right-hander is now just one step away from returning to the Cardinals, though he seems likely to make more than one start with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. Joe Kelly will continue to serve as St. Louis' fifth starter for the time being.

Mon Jul 15 201321:15Carpenter offers mixed bag in rehab start
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings Monday in his first rehab start with Double-A Springfield.
The good news is that he struck out five and reportedly touched 95 mph on the radar gun. Of course, the Cardinals' main concern is how Carpenter feels, and it appears that he made it through the outing with no physical issues. The veteran right-hander could rejoin the Cards' rotation later this month if all goes well.

Thu Jul 11 201309:32Shane Robinson says Carpenter 'unhittable'
Shane Robinson told reporters that Chris Carpenter's cutter was "virtually unhittable" on Wednesday.
Robinson was one of a couple hitters standing in the box for Carpenter's 100-pitch simulated game at Busch Stadium and provided rave reviews afterward. Carp has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday at Double-A Springfield and could be allowed to join the Cardinals' starting rotation around early August.

Wed Jul 10 201317:52Chris Carpenter cleared to start rehab games
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, back) will begin a rehab assignment Monday at Double-A Springfield.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was the first to pass that information along. Carpenter made it through a 100-pitch simulated game on Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium without feeling any pain or discomfort. He could join the Cardinals at some point in late July or early August, perhaps as their fifth starter.

Sun Jul 7 201308:52Chris Carpenter wants to pitch in 2014
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, back) told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he would like to pitch in 2014.
It was at the start of spring training that Carpenter seemed resigned to the fact that the nerve issue in his neck/shoulder wouldn't allow him to pitch again, but he's now thinking about extending his career indefinitely. Of course, he's yet to make it back in 2013 and is far from out of the woods, so any discussion of next season is premature. The veteran righty could be cleared for a rehab assignment before long.

Fri Jul 5 201318:06Chris Carpenter throws successful bullpen
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, back) threw five simulated innings in a successful bullpen session at Busch Stadium on Friday.
Cardinals skipper Mike Matheny was particularly encouraged by the outing, stating that it was the best he's seen from Carpenter during his lengthy rehab. The next step will be for him to face live hitters, which could happen this week. He's still got a long way to go before returning, but this is a step in the right direction.

Thu Jul 4 201309:52Carpenter (shoulder, back) set for bullpener
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday at Busch Stadium.
If the workout goes well, Carpenter could be cleared to face live batters in a simulated game. If it doesn't go all that well, he will be asked to continue throwing bullpen sessions. The veteran right-hander is aiming to contribute at some point this season, but there's no telling when he might feel 100 percent healthy.

Fri Jun 21 201319:35Chris Carpenter cleared for throwing program
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, back) has been cleared to resume a throwing program.
Carpenter has been shut down since earlier this week with lower back stiffness and will throw a light bullpen session Saturday before being reevaluated. The Cardinals originally hoped that Carpenter could be available in late June, but he likely won't be an option to return until after the All-Star break.

Thu Jun 20 201317:50Chris Carpenter having back evaluated
Chris Carpenter will undergo an examination on his back.
Carpenter felt tightness during a bullpen session Sunday which is currently limiting his ability to throw. His symptoms are related to a previous back condition. It's too soon to say how long he'll be sidelined, but there should be some clarity on his status soon.

Mon Jun 17 201317:24Carp has stiff back in bullpen session
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that Chris Carpenter felt some back stiffness during a long bullpen session Sunday.
It's not clear if Carpenter will have to scale back his throwing program, but he'll likely need a few more bullpen sessions before the Cardinals think about the possibility of a rehab assignment. While it once looked like the veteran right-hander could return in late June, sometime during the second half appears more realistic at this point.

Thu Jun 6 201318:35Chris Carpenter has 'a ways to go'
Chris Carpenter (shoulder) said he still has "a ways to go" before he returns.
Carpenter threw another 20-25 pitch live session to hitters on Thursday, but the Cardinals are understandably taking it slowly with his recovery. There had been some thought that he could return by late June, but it's looking like it will probably be July before we see him. "They're going to put me through the longer course of my throws and simulateds and all that stuff before they send me out (on a rehab assignment)," Carpenter said. "They want to make sure that I recover. And that's to be expected."

Mon Jun 3 201319:11Chris Carpenter throws live BP on Monday
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) threw 40-plus pitches of live batting practice on Monday.
"It was a good first step," said Carpenter, who has been throwing bullpens for the past six weeks. "Basically, it was the same exact thing that we've done the last two times except we threw some hitters in there." Carp indicated that he likely has a couple more live BP sessions before he'll be ready for a rehab assignment. Matt Adams, who was one of the hitters standing in on the session, was impressed with how the righty looked. "He was treating it like he was pitching in a game. Everything had movement," Adams said. "His curveball was sharp, his changeup had good fade to it and his fastball would run -- and he cut a couple, too."

Wed May 29 201318:20Chris Carpenter feels good during pen session
Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) felt good during a 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday.
The Cardinals decided to slow down Carpenter's throwing program after a throwing session last week didn't go well, but the club is viewing it only as a minor speed bump. It's not clear when Carp will be cleared to face hitters.
