Sun Jan 2812:31Charlie Morton Healthy Heading Into 2024 Season
Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton (finger) said that his finger is fine and that he's fully healthy heading into the 2024 season. The Braves were a bit uncertain about bringing back Morton for his age-40 season, but they still went ahead and picked up his $20 million option for 2024 this offseason. Morton had a career-worst 11.6 percent walk rate in his third year with Atlanta in 2023, but he still managed to strike out 183 batters and had a decent 3.64 ERA (3.87 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP in 163 1/3 total innings over his 30 starts. Morton might have just one season left in him, but he makes for a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm for the Braves and carries more fantasy appeal while being backed by one of the best offenses in the league. He's been reliable, making at least 30 starts in each season since 2018, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.

Mon Nov 6 202318:02Braves Exercise Charlie Morton's 2024 Option
The Atlanta Braves exercised right-hander Charlie Morton's $20 million option for the 2024 season on Monday. Morton will turn 40 years old next week, but he had a 3.64 ERA (3.87 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP with 83 walks and 183 strikeouts in 163 1/3 innings over 30 starts for Atlanta in 2023 and has a 3.77 ERA with 604 strikeouts in 521 innings over the last three seasons with the Braves, including two 14-win campaigns. Morton could be playing in his final big-league season in 2024, and there were some signs of regression, as expected, last year. He had a bloated 11.6 percent walk rate. However, he was able to keep the ball in the park for the most park and had a strong 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. Injuries will be a concern, but Morton will continue to have fantasy appeal in fantasy leagues because of strikeout ability and the fact that he pitches for one of the best teams in baseball.

Fri Oct 6 202322:58Charlie Morton Throws Bullpen Friday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton (finger) threw a bullpen session on Friday and he seemed to get through it just fine. Morton is trying to get himself ready in case the Braves advance past the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series and get to the Championship Series. The 39-year-old veteran landed on the injured list with inflammation in his right index finger on Sept. 24. It's unclear if he'd return in a relief role, but Morton was a significant part of Atlanta's starting rotation all year, going 14-12 with a 3.64 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 183 strikeouts in 163 1/3 innings over his 30 starts. Morton brings plenty of postseason experience, too, having posted a 3.60 ERA with 92 strikeouts in 80 innings over 18 playoff appearances since 2013.

Fri Sep 22 202321:22Charlie Morton Pulled With Finger Injury
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton was removed from Friday's game due to an injury in his right index finger. It was first thought Morton had a blister, but he felt something on a pitch and was replaced soon after. X-rays were negative but he'll go for an MRI on Saturday. Look for an update with what the testing provides and if it'll be an issue going forward for Morton.

Wed Aug 30 202300:09Charlie Morton Pitches Well Again, Earns Win Tuesday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton continued his hot stretch in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Rockies. The veteran pitched six innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Morton has had an up-and-down season but has now allowed just one run over his last four starts, bringing his season stats to a 14-10 record with a 3.29 ERA in 26 starts. Morton's next start will be a tough test at the Dodgers, but his recent success should hopefully instill a bit of confidence in fantasy managers who are not in a position to sit him.

Wed Jul 26 202318:28Charlie Morton To Start On Monday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton will receive an extra day of rest and be pushed back in the rotation. The 39-year-old will now take the ball against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. The Braves will go with Yonny Chirinos and Bryce Elder on Friday and Saturday. It's uncertain who will pitch on Sunday, but the Braves might go with a bullpen game. That being said, fantasy managers should be prepared to be without Morton for this weekend's series.

Tue Jul 25 202314:21Charlie Morton In Search Of Bounce-Back Effort Tuesday
Atlanta Braves pitcher Charlie Morton will be in search of improved results on Tuesday when he gets the ball for a road start against the Boston Red Sox. His previous outing wasn't a complete disaster but Morton did yield four earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out just four across 5 2/3 innings in a losing effort against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The outing snapped a stretch of six straight starts in which Morton yielded three earned runs or fewer while he had surrendered just a single earned run across his previous three starts. Nonetheless, he will carry a strong 3.36 ERA into Tuesday's start against a Red Sox offense that sits eighth with a .331 wOBA against right-handed pitching on the season.

Tue Jun 13 202300:23Charlie Morton's Potential Win Spoiled Monday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton pitched well but had a win bid dashed in Monday's 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Tigers. The 39-year-old pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. However, Raisel Iglesias could not close things out with a three-run lead, ending in an eventual loss. While his 3.60 ERA and 10.20 K/9 rate look solid overall, Morton has been inconsistent at times throughout the season. He will have the opportunity to build off of this strong start in his next scheduled start at home against the Rockies.

Sat Jun 3 202314:28Charlie Morton Saddled With Third Straight Loss
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton withstood seven innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. The 39-year-old struck out nine batters and surrendered three runs for a quality start, but took a loss after Atlanta was beaten 3-2. Morton has fanned nine batters or more on four occasions in his 11 starts this year. The two-time All-Star has been fairly dependable overall, registering a 3.62 ERA with 72 punchouts in 64 2/3 innings. A 1.44 WHIP, however, remains a bit suspect. Morton tentatively faces the New York Mets next on Thursday, when he'll be seeking his first win since May 15.

Sat Apr 29 202313:43Charlie Morton Will Start On Monday Against NYM
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton has had his start pushed to Monday versus the New York Mets. The veteran hurler was scheduled to pitch Sunday's contest against the Mets but due to Saturday's rainout, Spencer Strider will get that assignment instead. The 39-year-old right-hander owns a solid 3-2 record, 2.76 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 26:12 K/BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings (five starts) to begin the season

Wed Mar 29 202300:46Charlie Morton Wraps Up Uninspiring Spring Tuesday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton turned in one final lackluster start in Tuesday's 7-5 Grapefruit League win over the Red Sox. The 39-year-old pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits (including two home runs) and two walks with no strikeouts. It is of course small sample size, but Morton compiled a 6.00 ERA in 12 IP this spring. This follows a middling 2022 season in which Morton went 9-6 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 28.2% strikeout rate in 31 starts. Age is a concern, but Morton still seems like a worthwhile fantasy pick given his history and strikeout upside.

Tue Feb 14 202315:49Charlie Morton Throws Bullpen Tuesday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton (elbow) threw a touch-and-feel bullpen on Tuesday with new catcher Sean Murphy. Morton exited his final start of last season after taking a comebacker off his elbow in Game 4 of the National League Division series against the Philadelphia Phillies, but it looks as though he'll be fine for spring training and the star of the 2023 season. He's entering his age-39 season this year after going 9-6 with a 4.34 ERA (4.26 FIP), 1.23 WHIP and 28.2 strikeout rate in 172 innings over 31 starts. Morton is no longer in his prime and could be in his last season before retirement, but he can still miss bats (10th in strikeouts in 2022).

Sun Oct 16 202212:16Charlie Morton Removed During Saturday's Start
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton (arm) was removed early during Saturday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran right-hander exited with the training staff after finishing the third inning. The 38-year-old was struck by a comebacker on the arm in the second inning. The team hasn't given an update on his status, but there should be more news soon. The Braves have been eliminated from the postseason, so Morton will get the entire offseason to rest and recover.

Fri Oct 14 202211:12Charlie Morton Going In Game 4 For Atlanta
Atlanta Braves right-hander Charlie Morton will make the start in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. With rookie Spencer Strider (oblique) getting the nod in Game 3 on Friday, Morton will be pushed back a day in the series. The 38-year-old veteran had a rough finish to the regular season and finished the year 9-6 with a 4.34 ERA (4.26 FIP), a 1.23 WHIP and a 205:63 K:BB in 172 innings over his 31 starts for Atlanta. The two-time All-Star has extensive playoff experience and faced the Phillies for five starts this year, allowing 17 runs (16 earned) on 31 hits while walking 11 and striking out 26 in 26 1/3 innings of work. Morton went 0-1 against them with a 5.47 ERA.

Fri Sep 30 202218:53Charlie Morton Agrees To Contract Extension With Braves
The Atlanta Braves and starting pitcher Charlie Morton have agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract extension for the 2023 season, with a $20 million club option for 2024. The 38-year-old righty will be back in the Braves rotation for at least another year, and maybe two, with the new deal. Morton hasn't quite lived up to expectations this season, but he has been solid and has shown the occasional glimpse of dominance. He has a 9-6 record, 4.29 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 200:62 K:BB ratio over 167 IP. He will likely be drafted in the mid-late rounds of next year's draft and could provide good value that late.

Wed Sep 21 202200:59Charlie Morton Earns Ninth Win Of Season Tuesday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton helped clinch the team's fifth straight playoff appearance in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Nationals. Morton pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. The veteran has had a frustrating season, going 9-6 with a 4.09 ERA and a 10.82 K/9 rate over 29 starts and 163 IP. Morton has allowed four runs in two of his September starts and one each in his other two. His next matchup will be a tough one at the Phillies. Fantasy managers can hope they get the good version of Morton, but with so much on the line they could also play it safe and sit him if they have other strong pitching options.

Sat Jul 9 202214:11Charlie Morton Picks Up Fifth Win Over Nationals
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton continued his recent stretch of strong performances Friday night, capitalizing on a favorable matchup against the Washington Nationals. Morton allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. After a dismal April and a mediocre May, Morton has shown great improvement, with only six earned runs allowed total over his last five starts. Fantasy managers who were patient or bought low are reaping the rewards.

Morton also surrendered seven hits and four walks while striking out five hitters. He threw 102 pitches on the day. Additionally, the veteran logged a 25% CSW rate and registered nine swinging strikes. So far this season, Morton has pitched to a 4.73 ERA and a 4.15 FIP in 80 innings while striking out 91 batters and allowing 30 walks. He's been much better lately, though, with a 2.81 ERA, a 3.21 FIP, and 37 strikeouts compared to five walks allowed in 25.2 innings over his last four starts.

Sat Jun 18 202210:00Charlie Morton Pitches Seven Strong Innings Friday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton had arguably his best start of the season on Friday, pitching seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts, three hits, and no walks. However, he didn't earn the win, and the Braves ultimately lost the game 1-0. Morton hasn't been himself this year, pitching to a 5.08 ERA, 25.3 K%, and 1.37 WHIP over 13 starts. Fantasy managers shouldn't start the 38-year-old against good lineups, but hopefully, this is the beginning of a turnaround.

Tue May 24 202214:20Charlie Morton Off To Uneven Start
Atlanta Braves starter Charlie Morton has had an uneven start to the 2022 season. In 40 innings spanning eight starts this year, Morton has pitched to a 4.95 ERA, a 4.36 FIP, 37 strikeouts, and 19 walks. The veteran had a 6.85 ERA and a 5.39 FIP in 23.2 innings in his first five starts but has been much more effective lately. In his last three starts, Morton has allowed just five walks and four earned runs in 16.1 innings while striking out 19 batters. His next start will come Wednesday at home against the Philadelphia Phillies.
