Mon Mar 30 201513:45Maholm released by Reds on Monday
Maholm was released by the Reds on Monday.
He was competing for a spot in the Reds' bullpen, and will now look to catch on with another team, likely on a minor league deal. Maholm's career as a starter appears to be over, and he carries little fantasy intrigue as a middle reliever.
Wed Mar 18 201511:42Maholm told that he now competing for spot in Reds' bullpen
Maholm has been told that he is now competing for a spot in the Reds' bullpen, the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reports.
This removes him from the running for one of the team's final rotation spots, as those will now belong to Raisel Iglesias and Jason Marquis until Homer Bailey (forearm) is ready to reclaim a spot. Maholm is not the kind of pitcher who profiles as a potentially dominant reliever, so this significantly deflates any potential fantasy value he may have offered when he was still in the hunt for a rotation spot.

The Reds moved Tony Cingrani to the bullpen, giving Maholm a better chance to win a rotation spot, the Cincinnati Enquirer suggests.
The original supposition was that Cingrani and Anthony DeSclafani would fill two open rotation spots, and then either Maholm or Jason Marquis would be the favorite to land the spot vacated by Homer Bailey's season-opening DL stint. Now there's room for both veterans. "The thing is we've got veteran guys like Marquis and Maholm and we don't want to use them one start," Price said. "If they're going to be on our team, the hope is they're on our team for the entire season if not longer. That's how we have to look at it. You can back-and-forth a young guy. He can start a game or two, go down to the minor leagues or go into the bullpen and help as a long guy. Marquis and Maholm are looking more like long-term, start-to-finish options for us."

Maholm threw three scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring training game against the Royals. Eight of his nine outs were recorded on the ground.
Maholm continues to vie for the final Reds rotation spot. Both he and veteran Jason Marquis are considered favorites for the spot open while Homer Bailey is out to begin the season. Marquis has pitched well this spring, too.
Mon Mar 2 201516:08If Homer Bailey not ready to begin season
If Homer Bailey is not ready to begin the season, there's a good chance that Maholm or Jason Marquis could temporarily fill his spot in the rotation, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Reds manager Bryan Price cited the desire to have an experienced starter fill that slot. "An example would be if Homer is not able to go. If we're healthy, that means Cueto and Leake and three spots in the rotation two that we think could potentially be filled by young pitchers in Cingrani and DeSclafani. That to me suggests that a veteran guy in that other spot would be fairly important, someone who knows how to manage a game and has pitched in the league and has had success in the league."

Maholm (knee) signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Sunday that includes an invite to spring training.
Maholm is rehabbing his way back from ACL surgery in August. The veteran pitched in 30 games with the Dodgers last season, mixing in eight starts and finishing with a 4.84 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 70.2 innings. If Maholm were to make the roster, it would likely be in a bullpen role rather than in the starting rotation.

Maholm (knee) said his recovery from ACL surgery is going "great," Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports.
Maholm, who underwent surgery in mid-August, said he's been on a normal offseason schedule since Dec. 1, which would seem to bode well for his status heading into the spring. Still, he's a free agent, so he'll need to prove to teams he's healthy and worth a flyer as a potential rotational arm.
Fri Aug 15 201418:28Maholm (knee) underwent reconstructive surgery Friday
Maholm (knee) underwent reconstructive surgery Friday, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Maholm was placed on the 60-day disabled list on Aug. 4 because of the injury, and will soon begin on his road to recovery from a torn ACL. He will become a free agent in the offseason, so he will need to prove himself in spring training if he wants to find himself in a rotation at the start of the 2015 regular season.

Maholm (knee) was placed on the 60-day DL Monday.
He will miss the rest of the season with season-ending knee surgery, and will then be a free agent after the season, so he will likely struggle to make a starting rotation out of spring. He has no further fantasy value in 2014.

Maholm (knee) will meet with team doctors on Tuesday and looks likely to undergo season-ending knee reconstruction, the team's official site reports.
Maholm is a free agent after this season and will likely be looking at a minor league contract with some team next spring.

Maholm suffered a torn right ACL in Friday's game, effectively ending his 2014 season.
The Dodgers are becoming woefully thin with regards to organizational depth capable of helping in the rotation. As a result, trade before the August 31 waiver deadline appears to be a certainty. The Dodgers will almost certainly place Maholm on the 15-day DL prior to Saturday's game against the Cubs.

Maholm appeared to suffer a right knee injury while covering first base on a play during Friday's game, Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Brian Wilson replaced Maholm to begin the eighth inning, while the Dodgers will likely provide further details regarding the extent of Maholm's injury following Friday's game.
Sun Jul 13 201401:14Paul Maholm combines on shutout of Padres
Filling in for Josh Beckett, Paul Maholm held the Padres scoreless for six innings on Saturday.
Maholm entered with a 5.18 ERA and he hadn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in an outing in two months, so of course he combined on a shutout of the Padres. He allowed just two hits, walked none and struck out four while throwing 65 pitches in his six innings. It's the first time since April 14, 2013 that he's escaped a start without allowing a run.

Thu Jul 10 201421:49Paul Maholm likely to start on Saturday
Paul Maholm is likely to start on Saturday against the Padres in place of the injured Josh Beckett (hip).
He's expected to take the ball unless he's needed relief on Thursday or Friday. Red Patterson will be on standby at Triple-A Albuquerque in case Maholm does have to pitch in relief over the next couple days. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Thu May 15 201401:33Maholm gets whacked around for 10 R by Fish
Paul Maholm was pummeled for 10 runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a blowout loss to the Marlins.
It wasn't pretty. Maholm failed to strike out a batter, he walked three, and he was kicked all around the park for 11 hits. Two of those hits were home runs off the bats of Ed Lucas and Reed Johnson. Indeed, this was a Miami lineup batting Jeff Baker cleanup, Johnson No. 5, and started Jeff Mathis so Jarrod Saltalamacchia could have a day off. It's no certainty that the Dodgers will keep Maholm's 5.40 ERA and 1.73 ERA in the rotation, but if they do, he'll square off against the Mets in New York next week.

Sat May 10 201402:04Paul Maholm gives up three runs in loss
Paul Maholm gave up three runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Giants on Friday.
Maholm helped the Dodgers' cause by breaking Brandon Belt's thumb, though we hope he wouldn't chalk that up as a positive. He's 1-3 with a 4.71 ERA, and the Dodgers would happily bounce him from the rotation if they could get healthy.

Sun Apr 27 201401:10Paul Maholm picks up first win of year
Paul Maholm put himself into the win column with seven innings of two-run ball Saturday against the Rockies.
The only extra-base hit against Maholm tonight was a routine fly that Matt Kemp lost in the twilight, giving Wilin Rosario a double. Maholm is likely looking at getting one more start before Clayton Kershaw rejoins the Dodgers rotation. That will probably result in Maholm getting demoted to the pen.

Tue Apr 22 201401:13Maholm gets whacked around by the Phillies
Paul Maholm was chased for five runs -- four earned -- over five innings Monday in a 7-0 loss to the Phillies.
The veteran southpaw surrendered eight hits and three walks while striking out only two. He also gave up a two-run homer to Ryan Howard, who, well, doesn't generally pound lefties. He'll make an exception for Mr. Maholm, who the Dodgers must tolerate in the rotation until Clayton Kershaw returns. Maholm (0-2, 5.60 ERA) welcomes the Rockies to Hollywood on Saturday.

Thu Apr 17 201401:28Maholm works six quality innings in ND vs. SF
Paul Maholm surrendered only one run on five hits over six innings of a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.
He whiffed two and walked three in his best start since August 28. The left-hander entered this game with an 8.10 ERA, but that was mostly because he got bombed by the Giants in his only other start of the year back on April 5. His rotation spot is safe until Clayton Kershaw comes back. Maholm will toe the Chavez Ravine rubber with his shiny new 4.97 ERA against Philadelphia next week.

Wed Apr 2 201418:25Maholm throws bullpen, on track to start Sat.
Paul Maholm threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is on track to make his first start with the Dodgers on Saturday, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.
The team hasn't announced its rotation for the upcoming series against the Giants, so it's still just speculation that Maholm will get the start. The bullpen session lines him up to do just that, though, and the team is still searching for another starter in the wake of Clayton Kershaw's injury. The southpaw was signed to a one-year deal by the Dodgers in February as depth for these types of situations, and he's working his way back after being sidelined by some elbow soreness early in camp.
