Fri May 13 201110:00Tim Alderson thriving in relief role
Pirates pitching prospect Tim Alderson has been thriving in a relief role at Double-A Altoona this season, posting a 1.04 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 9.4 K/9 rate over 17 1/3 innings.
The Pirates decided to move the formerly highly thought of prospect to the bullpen this season after he suffered a precipitous drop in velocity and confidence last year. So far, so good. "There are some mechanical things that he's starting to take hold of and own," Pirates director of player development Kyle Stark said. "He's having fun again competing, which always helps. As far as has there been a noticeable change in 'stuff'? No. But it is playing better because he's believing in it and having fun doing it." Alderson could be promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis shortly.

Mon Apr 4 201109:49Pirates move prospect Alderson to bullpen
The Pirates have moved prospect Tim Alderson from the rotation to the bullpen at Double-A.
Alderson has struggled mightily since the Pirates acquired him from the Giants in 2009 for second baseman Freddy Sanchez. A former first round pick, he posted a rough 6.03 ERA and 84/40 K/BB ratio across 128 1/3 minor league innings last year. The 22-year-old will open the season as a long man at Double-A Altoona.

Tue Jul 13 201011:48Aldreson demoted from Double-A to Single-A
The Pirates have demoted right-handed pitching prospect Tim Alderson from Double-A Altoona to Single-A Bradenton.
Another failed prospect for the Pirates? Alderson, 21, posted a 5.62 ERA in 17 starts for Altoona while opposing batters hit .307 against him. The tall right-hander will try to right the ship against a lower level of competition. He has youth on his side, but Alderson has been a disappointment thus far.
