Thu Oct 13 201600:04Giants season-ending report: Looking for relief, power
SAN FRANCISCO -- The spotlight that was shined on the club's shaky bullpen in the season-ending loss to the Chicago Cubs blinded Giants fans to a greater truth.A team that finished the second half of the season with the fourth-worst record in baseball (30-42) had many more issues than only the guys who saw 32 late-inning leads slip away in 2016.A tale of two seasons, Giants manager Bruce Bochy labeled it.Bochy might as well have called it: The end of an era.Oh, the Giants, who appeared to be the best team in baseball at the All-Star break, proudly showing off their best-in-baseball 57-33 record, have every reason to believe they will be a serious contender for a fourth title in eight seasons in 2017.They will probably just have to make that trek without several guys who earned one, two or even all three of those previous championship rings."Great season," Bochy noted after the crushing defeat in Game 4 of the National League Division Series, which ended his team's year. "I'm very proud... [More]

LHP Javier Lopez was the only Giants reliever not used in Monday's 14-inning marathon. That made five straight days without an appearance for Lopez, who finally got in the game on Tuesday, pitching 1/3 of an inning. Lopez, 39, has not allowed a run in 41 of his 43 appearances. He has inherited 38 runners -- third most in the NL -- and allowed only four to score.

Lopez could be a candidate to close games while Santiago Casilla (fatigue) is rested, Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area reports.
Lopez will likely close games if the opposition has several lefties lined up in the ninth inning, while Sergio Romo would get the call with right-handers scheduled to bat. Lopez has much better numbers on the season, however, posting a 1.59 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. Although Lopez should continue to be a relatively reliable source for holds, this boost in value will likely be temporary.

Lopez retired all four batters he faced Thursday, striking out two in the loss to the Reds.
Lopez has a sparkling 1.93 ERA and 0.54 WHIP on the season. Thursday's 1.1 inning appearance was a rare one, as manager Bruce Bochy usually uses Lopez for just one or two batters per outing. His lack of innings logged is what keeps him from being middle reliever to target.

Lopez (biceps) made his spring training debut Tuesday, recording two outs while walking one and allowing one hit against the Padres.
Lopez has been dealing with biceps tendinitis this spring, but he made his debut and felt fine after the outing. At the age of 37, the Giants will probably focus on getting him rest during spring training. Lopez will resume his role as a left-handed specialist once the season gets under way.
