INF Ramiro Pena, who was removed in the fifth inning of a Wednesday game against Oakland with a sprained ankle, hit in the batting cages before the game Saturday and was unavailable to pinch-hit. "He's doing better," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He did some jogging out there earlier today."

INF Ramiro Pena had an MRI exam Thursday that confirmed the initial diagnosis of a sprained left ankle. Pena was injured during a collision with RF Mac Williamson in the third inning Wednesday against the A's. Pena is expected to be out of the lineup for five to seven days but might be available to pinch-hit this weekend. According to Giants manager Bruce Bochy, Pena's injury wasn't serious enough to warrant a stay on the 15-day disabled list. "We just felt this was a better way to go instead of missing him for 15 days, if something else happened," Bochy said.

2B Ramiro Pena sprained his left ankle during a collision with RF Mac Williamson in the third inning of the Giants' 7-1 loss to Oakland on Wednesday. Pena and Williamson were both pursuing SS Marcus Semien's pop fly to shallow right field when they collided. The ball hit the ground, and Semien ran to third. Pena was charged with an error and stayed on the ground while he was examined by a trainer. He stayed in the game until being replaced for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. "He's pretty sore," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "X-rays were negative. We'll get an MRI tomorrow. He's looking at (missing) five to seven days. I think it's pretty evident we're going to have to get somebody to help out here."

SS Ramiro Pena took advantage of SS Brandon Crawford's night off to record two hits and an RBI in the Giants' loss Monday night to the Oakland Athletics. The start was his sixth (three at third base, two at shortstop, one at second base) for the Giants since he was promoted from Triple-A on June 10. His .414 average (12-for-29) is tops among Giants with more than one at-bat.

INF Ramiro Pena was promoted from Triple-A Sacramento to the Giants on Friday to take the roster spot created when INF/OF Kelby Tomlinson was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The switch-hitter was batting .304 at the time of his promotion, and had been especially strong against right-handed pitchers (.326) for Sacramento. Pena has previous major league playing experienced with the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves. He did not play in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wed Apr 1 201515:57Pena reassigned to Minor League camp Wednesday
Pena was reassigned to Minor League camp Wednesday, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
Pena agreed to a minor league deal with the Padres in January and was a non-roster invitee to camp. He batted .267 with nine strikeouts and two walks over 30 at-bats this spring.
Mon Jan 26 201516:54Pena signed minor league deal with Padres on Monday
Pena signed a minor league deal with the Padres on Monday, which includes an invite to spring training, the Union-Tribune's Dennis Lin reports.
After being designated for assignment by the Braves, Pena chose to become a free agent, and he will now try to catch on with the Padres with a strong spring training. Capable of playing all over the infield, Pena's best shot at cracking the Padres' Opening Day roster would be as a utility man, and would then need an injury to befall someone ahead of him on the depth chart to become fantasy relevant in most formats.
Sun Dec 7 201410:38Pena has elected free agency
Pena has elected free agency, CBS Sports reports.
Pena was designated for assignment by the Braves in November after hitting .245/.304/.347 in 2014, but will test his luck on the free agent market instead. He'll likely draw interest from some teams as a utility infielder for next season.
Wed Nov 19 201420:34Pena designated for assignment by Braves
Pena has been designated for assignment by the Braves, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports.
Pena hit .245/.304/.347 over 81 games with the Braves in 2014, but with Tommy La Stella likely in line to resume full-time second base duties in 2015, Pena was deemed expendable when a spot was needed on the 40-man roster.
Tue May 6 201400:03Ramiro Pena homers against Cardinals
Ramiro Pena went 2-for-4 with a homer as the Braves' No. 9 hitter on Monday.
If the Braves decide to replace Dan Uggla, it's expected to be with Triple-A Gwinnett's Tommy La Stella. Pena, though, is probably a better defender than both of those guys, and he's been a reasonable enough hitter in 129 at-bats over the last two years. He likely earned himself another start on Tuesday anyway.

Sun Mar 9 201417:22Ramiro Pena doubles twice
Ramiro Pena doubled twice and drove in a run against the Mets on Sunday.
Pena was a nice surprise for the Braves last year, hitting .278/.330/.443 in 97 at-bats, before going down with a torn labrum. He's healthy now and ready to serve as a backup throughout the infield. He probably won't hit so well again, but if he does, he should steal time away from Dan Uggla at second. He is the better defender of the two, after all.

No word on the terms involved. Pena, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, hit .278/.330/.443 in 107 plate appearances this year to undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery in June. However, the Braves are apparently confident that he'll be fine for 2014.

Fri Aug 2 201308:50Braves may look to waivers for bench help
The Braves may look to trade for a backup infielder and left-handed bench bat via a waivers trade this month.
Ramiro Pena's season ended due to a torn right labrum in June. Earlier this week, Braves general manager Frank Wren was able to pull off a trade for Angels' reliever Scott Downs, who filled perhaps Atlanta's most pressing hole, but couldn't consummate a swap to fortify his bench. "I think there's a good chance (of another trade), once we have a better sense, get guys healthy, get the team functioning the way we see it functioning going forward - that's short of other injuries," Wren said. "I think we'll probably have some other activity, but all in all we're pretty happy. The club is playing as well as we've played all year long. There're a lot of positives."

Wed Jun 26 201323:45Ramiro Pena to undergo shoulder surgery
Ramiro Pena will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a torn right labrum.
No timetable for his return has been given, but it would presumably be season-ending. Pena originally hurt the shoulder on June 9 and was finally placed on the DL late last week.
