Gamel (knee) signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees earlier this week, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Gamel has seen his career bottom out since emerging as a top prospect in the Brewers' system following a massive 2011 campaign at Triple-A Nashville, during which he slashed .310/.372/.540 with 28 homers. However, he never received much of a chance to test his game in the majors, as he lost back-to-back seasons due to ACL tears and was released by the Braves last spring after suffering a setback in his recovery. At this point, the 29-year-old's hopes of reaching the majors again appear to be slim, but he could provide the Yankees with some quality organizational depth at the Triple-A level.

Gamel signed a minor league contract with the Braves in December, but he reinjured his surgically-repaired right knee while working out on his own last week and was given his release as a result. The 28-year-old continues to have awful luck on the health front.

Fri Dec 13 201312:35Braves ink Mat Gamel to minor league deal
Braves signed INF Mat Gamel to a minor league contract.
The deal presumably contains an invitation to spring training. Gamel is coming back from a pair of ACL tears but is expected to be healthy for spring training. It's a bit of an odd landing spot for him, as he has no chance to win a starting job. Gamel, 28, is a career .229/.305/.367 hitter but potentially could be a nice bench bat for the Braves.

Mon Feb 18 201312:11Mat Gamel (knee) ruled out for 2013 season
Mat Gamel (knee) has been ruled out for the season.
Gamel re-injured his surgically-repaired right knee on Saturday in camp. It's another tough development for the Brewers, who were going to rely on Gamel as their starter at first base this season until Corey Hart recovered from his own recent knee procedure. The Milwaukee front office will have to reconsider outside options to fill the hole at a premium offensive position.

Sun Feb 17 201312:55Mat Gamel could return Monday
Mat Gamel (knee) was held out of drills Sunday but could return to action Monday on a limited basis.
"It won't be full go, we'll just get him out there and acclimate him to the different things going on," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. Gamel experienced a setback with his surgically-repaired right knee Saturday, and while Milwaukee's skipper said he doesn't view it as a red flag yet, the club will obviously keep a close eye on him.

Sat Feb 16 201316:03Gamel aggravates knee injury in workout
Mat Gamel had to cut Saturday's workout short after aggravating his surgically-repaired right knee.
The Brewers are being extremely cautious with Gamel's recovery this early in camp, so if he felt any type of pain at all, it's likely he would've been shut down. Look for the team to release an update on his status shortly. If healthy, Gamel is expected to serve as the Brewers primary first baseman while Corey Hart is on the disabled list.

Sun Jan 27 201313:46Mat Gamel 'ready to go'
Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Mat Gamel is "ready to go" after having his surgically-repaired right knee examined Sunday.
Gamel had ACL surgery in May but hasn't encountered any hiccups during his rehab. The 27-year-old is expected to serve as the club's regular first baseman for the first couple months of the season while Corey Hart recovers from a knee surgery of his own. After that, Gamel will slide into a roving backup role at first and third base, as well as the corner outfield spots.

Tue Dec 4 201215:55Gamel (knee) to work in outfield in spring
Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that Mat Gamel (knee) will get extensive work in the outfield during spring training.
Gamel was the starter at first base prior to tearing his ACL in May, but the Brewers now plan to use him in a utility role now that Corey Hart has found a home there. "We're trying to get him more versatile," said Roenicke. "He'll play some outfield (in camp). Probably more in right field but some in left field today because 'Braunie' doesn't play every game. And he wants to do it." Gamel will also likely get work at third base as a backup to Aramis Ramirez.

Tue Sep 18 201220:07Brewers hope Mat Gamel will play winter ball
The Brewers hope Mat Gamel (knee) will be ready to play winter ball this offseason.
The Brews were hoping he'd be ready to play in the Arizona Fall League, but his rehab simply isn't far enough along. Gamel played for Estrellas in the Dominican Winter League last year, but their roster is full, so he'll have to find another team. Barring a setback, Gamel is expected to be healthy for the start of spring training.

Thu Aug 30 201209:18Gamel could head to Arizona Fall League
The Brewers are considering sending Mat Gamel (ACL surgery) to the Arizona Fall League.
