Wed Feb 19 202014:59Choo relishing 2020, the last year of big Rangers contract
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo wants to enjoy baseball even more this season, all of those times in the clubhouse and on the field while still at the top of the Texas Rangers lineup."I don't know what's going to happen at the end of the year," said Choo, the 37-year-old leadoff hitter going into the final season of his $130 million, seven-year contract.Choo has genuine confidence that he can play at a high level for another couple of years, or more, after 2020. There is just no way to know if he will be re-signed by the Rangers, maybe go to another team or decide it's time to be at home full-time with his wife and three growing children. Those are all questions he said are too early to consider. “I still love this game," Choo said. "I'm still lucky to play major league level, and then it's very special, major league uniform, wearing my number on it, my name on it on the back. That's very special, very lucky. I still feel that way, so we'll see.”His oldest kid is a 14-year-old son... [More]

Sat Mar 2 201916:07Ilitch says Tigers building the right way
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — As the Detroit Tigers prepare for what could be another tough season, Chris Ilitch can look back on a couple success stories from the Motor City's recent past."I've had a wonderful opportunity, having lived through building a four-time Stanley Cup champion in the Detroit Red Wings, and championship teams with the Detroit Tigers, and World Series participants," Ilitch said. "I think as you look back on how those clubs were built, they were built in large part, exactly the way we're building this club."Ilitch, the CEO of both the Tigers and Red Wings, was at spring training Saturday and took some questions from reporters in the dugout. Detroit lost 98 games in each of the past two seasons and remains in a rebuilding mode, but Ilitch said he's optimistic about the future. He also said he understands that fans want this process to pay dividends as quickly as possible."I'm a fan, first and foremost. I want to see our team be a great team, a playoff team, and ultimately... [More]
Wed Dec 19 201810:24Mercer the latest quiet addition for busy Detroit Tigers
DETROIT (AP) — Jordy Mercer found out quickly that the Tigers had him on their radar."They were one of the first clubs that we had talks with," Detroit's new shortstop said Tuesday. "It was early on in the process, so I know they were interested. They didn't back down."The rebuilding Tigers aren't a team likely to turn many heads this offseason, but they've wasted little time in pursuing their objectives, making three quiet free agent signings already. Mercer reached a one-year deal with Detroit, and so did pitchers Matt Moore and Tyson Ross. Those moves don't figure to shift the balance of power in the AL Central, but after two straight 98-loss seasons, the Tigers have been content to give out short-term contracts while waiting for some of their top prospects to reach the majors. While other teams have proceeded more slowly this offseason — perhaps waiting to see how the bidding goes for stars like Bryce Harper and Manny Machado — the Tigers have moved fast. So have the Texas Rangers, who... [More]

DH Prince Fielder formally announced his retirement from baseball before the Rangers' win over Colorado on Wednesday, heeding the advice of two doctors who recommended he not play again after a neck injury that has required surgery two of the past three years. "This is actually the most fun I've ever had and best I ever felt mentally about baseball," said Fielder, a six-time All-Star in the midst of a career-worst season. He left the game hitting just .212 with eight homers and 44 RBIs this season. "That's the thing that really hurts. My brain was good; my body, now ... my body, it just gave out." The Rangers, who owe Fielder a guaranteed $20 million a season for the next four seasons, have disability insurance that should protect them from eating all of the guaranteed contract. The Tigers pay $4 million a year as part of the trade that sent Fielder to Texas in 2013 for Ian Kinsler.

Wed Aug 10 201623:21Emotional Fielder announces his retirement
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Rather than the tears that streamed down his face, it was Prince Fielder's words that best exemplified the bitter heartbreak of a once-brilliant career cut short."This is actually the most fun I've ever had and best I ever felt mentally about baseball," Fielder said Wednesday. "That's the thing that really hurts. My brain was good; my body, now ... my body, it just gave out."An emotional Fielder, with his two young sons by his side and teammates flanking the dais, formally announced what he and Texas Rangers had known since a doctor's diagnosis last month: A chronic neck injury that has necessitated two spinal fusion surgeries would force the six-time All-Star to retire from baseball at the age of 32.Fielder, in a neck brace, was placed on the 60-day disabled list on July 20 after surgeon Robert Watkins of California recommended that the Texas designated hitter have surgery and not play again, a diagnosis team physician Drew Dossett confirmed days later."It's highly...
