Gregg Zaun has retired from baseball.

"The stamina just isn't there," Zaun told MLB.com's Corey Brock on Monday morning. "The arm strength came back ... but it wouldn't last. After three innings yesterday, I was totally gassed. The amount of time for me to get ready to play at a high level ... it just saps the fun out of it." The 39-year-old will retire with a .252/.344/.388 career batting line and 878 career hits.

Sportsnet expects Gregg Zaun to announce his retirement on Monday.

This news is somewhat surprising, as Zaun has been recovering nicely from shoulder surgery while pursuing the Padres' back-up catcher's job. He has been a serviceable performer for most of his career, compiling a .252/.344/.388 batting line and 88 home runs in 4,042 plate appearances.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears that the Cardinals are moving on from Gregg Zaun.

The Cardinals are in the market for a backup to Yadier Molina, but they have apparently expanded their search beyond Zaun. We know that the team has discussed signing Bengie Molina to back up his younger brother, but it's not known if he is interested.

According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Cardinals and Mariners are interested in free agent Gregg Zaun.

Zaun would be in line for more playing time in Seattle, where he would likely share time with Adam Moore. The Cardinals are looking for a veteran backup that would give them a little more offense than the Jason LaRues and Gary Bennetts have provided, and Zaun would be a fit. Yadier Molina catches more innings than anyone, though, so he'd be riding the bench most of the time.

Zaun, who turns 40 next April, previously played with the Rays down the stretch during the 2009 season. The Rays already have Dioner Navarro (a likely non-tender candidate), John Jaso and Kelly Shoppach under team control for next season, so Zaun will probably have to look elsewhere.

Prince Fielder also homered for the Brewers, and Ryan Braun had a three-run double and a triple. Zaun got off to a lousy start lasst month, going hitless in his first five starts, but he's been fine ever since. Those hoping George Kottaras would overtake him are probably going to be disappointed.

Both tied career-highs. Interestingly, he entered the night with just eight hits over his first 51 at-bats (.157) and three RBI. It's a great night for the veteran backstop, but he obviously shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.

The Brewers are going to find more time for George Kottaras if this keeps up. Kottaras was very good offensively this spring, and he's driven in three runs in his two regular-season starts, both of which were Brewers victories.

Zaun is currently bothered by a nagging quadriceps injury, though it's not believed to be serious. George Kottaras will start in his place, batting seventh against Aaron Cook.
