Mon Mar 7 201111:34Gregg Zaun officially retires from baseball
Gregg Zaun has retired from baseball.
"The stamina just isn't there," Zaun told MLB.com's Corey Brock on Monday morning. "The arm strength came back ... but it wouldn't last. After three innings yesterday, I was totally gassed. The amount of time for me to get ready to play at a high level ... it just saps the fun out of it." The 39-year-old will retire with a .252/.344/.388 career batting line and 878 career hits.

Mon Mar 7 201104:01Zaun expected to announcement retirement
Sportsnet expects Gregg Zaun to announce his retirement on Monday.
This news is somewhat surprising, as Zaun has been recovering nicely from shoulder surgery while pursuing the Padres' back-up catcher's job. He has been a serviceable performer for most of his career, compiling a .252/.344/.388 batting line and 88 home runs in 4,042 plate appearances.

Gregg Zaun (shoulder) is aiming to play in a spring game within the next 10 days.

Tue Feb 15 201122:58Zaun says shoulder feels great
Gregg Zaun said Tuesday that his surgically-repaired shoulder felt "great" in his first full day of camp.
Zaun considered retirement after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum last June, but signed a minor league deal with the Padres last month. "I've got a lot of work ahead of me in the next month," said Zaun. "The last thing I want to worry about is babysitting. I'm not trying to be selfish, but I've got a lot on my plate right now. I have to worry about keeping my arm healthy and getting my shoulder ready." The veteran backstop still has to prove he's healthy, but he projects to be the backup catcher to Gregg Zaun this season. He batted .265/.350/.392 with two home runs and 14 RBI over 117 plate appearances with the Brewers last season.

Tue Jan 18 201115:27Padres sign C Zaun to minors deal
Padres signed C Gregg Zaun to a minor league contract.
As expected. Zaun, who turns 40 in April, was batting .265/.350/.392 with two home runs and 14 RBI over 102 at-bats with the Brewers last season before undergoing shoulder surgery in June. Rob Johnson and Guillermo Quiroz will also compete for the backup catcher job behind Nick Hundley, but if healthy, the job should belong to Zaun.
Thu Jan 13 201118:16Padres close to agreement with Gregg Zaun
Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres are close to signing free agent catcher Gregg Zaun.
Zaun will have to battle Rob Johnson and Guillermo Quiroz this spring for the No. 2 job behind starting catcher Nick Hundley. It's not the most ideal situation for the 39-year-old veteran, but he will take what he can get after making just 102 at-bats last season for the Brewers and posting a .265/.350/.392 batting line, two home runs and 14 RBI while healthy.

Thu Dec 9 201012:48Cards moving on from Gregg Zaun
Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears that the Cardinals are moving on from Gregg Zaun.
The Cardinals are in the market for a backup to Yadier Molina, but they have apparently expanded their search beyond Zaun. We know that the team has discussed signing Bengie Molina to back up his younger brother, but it's not known if he is interested.

Mon Dec 6 201016:21Cardinals, Mariners interested in Zaun
According to Yahoo's Tim Brown, the Cardinals and Mariners are interested in free agent Gregg Zaun.
Zaun would be in line for more playing time in Seattle, where he would likely share time with Adam Moore. The Cardinals are looking for a veteran backup that would give them a little more offense than the Jason LaRues and Gary Bennetts have provided, and Zaun would be a fit. Yadier Molina catches more innings than anyone, though, so he'd be riding the bench most of the time.

Tue Nov 9 201017:12Zaun would like to return to Rays
During an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM, Gregg Zaun told Jim Bowden that his first choice is to sign with the Rays.
Zaun, who turns 40 next April, previously played with the Rays down the stretch during the 2009 season. He .265/.350/.392 with two home runs and 14 RBI in just 102 at-bats with the Brewers this past season and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in June. The Rays already have Dioner Navarro (a likely non-tender candidate), John Jaso and Kelly Shoppach under team control for next season, so Zaun will probably have to look elsewhere.

Tue Nov 2 201017:23Brewers decline option on Zaun
Brewers declined C Gregg Zaun's $2.25 million option for 2011.
Nothing surprising here, as Zaun is working his way back from season-ending shoulder surgery. He receives a $250,000 buyout from the club. The 39-year-old backstop batted .265/.350/.392 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 102 at-bats this past season.

Zaun underwent season-ending surgery on his shoulder in mid-June and will turn 40 at the beginning of next season, but he has not lost his drive. "I had my doubts when the injury occurred," the veteran catcher said Thursday. "Based on conversations with friends who'd had the same procedure, I was skeptical. Wed Jun 9 201017:07Zaun to have season-ending surgery Tuesday
Gregg Zaun is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
Zaun was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder in late May and was promptly placed on the 15-day disabled list. The Brewers might as well place him on the 60-day disabled list now, because he won't be back for quite a while. George Kottaras is Milwaukee's starting catcher.

Brewers placed C Gregg Zaun on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.
Zaun originally injured the shoulder last month, but has tried to play through it. Interestingly, he is batting .325/.413/.550 in May compared to .226/.310/.290 in April. Zaun will return to Milwaukee on Friday to be examined by team doctors. "I'm going to get it looked out and figure out what's going on," said Zaun. He injured the shoulder during a series against the Nationals last month. In turn, prospect catcher Jonathan Lucroy is expected to be called up from the minors.

Wed May 5 201001:36Brewers' Zaun hits two-run homer in win
Gregg Zaun went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double as the Brewers topped the Dodgers 11-6 on Tuesday.
Prince Fielder also homered for the Brewers, and Ryan Braun had a three-run double and a triple. Zaun got off to a lousy start lasst month, going hitless in his first five starts, but he's been fine ever since. Those hoping George Kottaras would overtake him are probably going to be disappointed.
Mon Apr 26 201023:56Zaun has four hits, five RBI in win
Gregg Zaun was 4-for-4 with five RBI in a blowout win over the Pirates on Monday night.
Both tied career-highs. Interestingly, he entered the night with just eight hits over his first 51 at-bats (.157) and three RBI. It's a great night for the veteran backstop, but he obviously shouldn't be on your fantasy radar.
Mon Apr 12 201017:27Brewers' Zaun now 0-for-18
Gregg Zaun went 0-for-4 on Monday and is 0-for-18 to open the season.
The Brewers are going to find more time for George Kottaras if this keeps up. Kottaras was very good offensively this spring, and he's driven in three runs in his two regular-season starts, both of which were Brewers victories.
Wed Apr 7 201010:25Zaun out of lineup on Wednesday
Gregg Zaun is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Rockies.
Zaun is currently bothered by a nagging quadriceps injury, though it's not believed to be serious. George Kottaras will start in his place, batting seventh against Aaron Cook.
