Diamondbacks signed INF Tommy Manzella to a minor league contract.
The deal does not include an invitation to spring training. The 30-year-old shortstop hasn't appeared in the big leagues since he was a member of the Astros in 2010. He'll serve as nothing more than organizational depth for the D'Backs.

Thu Mar 24 201109:05Astros make four cuts from camp
Astros optioned INF Tommy Manzella, LHP Wesley Wright and OF Brian Bogusevic to Triple-A Oklahoma City; reassigned C Brian Esposito to minor league camp.
What a difference a year makes. Manzella opened last season as the starting shortstop, though the Astros understandably soured on him after he batted just .225 with one home run, 21 RBI and a 71/13 K/BB ratio over 282 plate appearances. Bogusevic was competing for a reserve outfielder spot, which will likely go to either Jason Bourgeois or non-roster invitee J.B. Shuck.

Tue Sep 7 201013:04Astros sharing time in the middle infield
Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle expects the Astros to use a carousel of middle infielders through the end of this season.
Platoons are never good for fantasy purposes and the Astros have quite the crowded one. Tommy Manzella, Geoff Blum, Anderson Hernandez, Angel Sanchez and September call-up Matt Downs will all share time at second base and shortstop because, as Levine says, there is such "little distinction" between their skill sets. Chris Johnson should start most nights at third and Brett Wallace will continue to work his way toward becoming the everyday first baseman.
