Chris Sampson and Brad Hand are candidates to replace the recently demoted Chris Volstad as the Marlins' No. 5 starter.
Hand is the obvious candidate because he's been up a couple times already and has pitched well. Sampson, though, has posted a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts at Triple-A New Orleans and might be worth a look. The Marlins won't need to promote either until next weekend.

Inked to a minor league contract late last month, Sampson has been in extended spring training getting his arm in shape. He'll provide depth as a swing man at Triple-A.

Sampson, 32, posted an ugly 5.93 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 35 appearances for the Astros last season before they outrighted him off their 40-man roster in September. The Rockies' bullpen is full, but Sampson can try to make a good impression this spring with the hope of being called up in an emergency situation down the road.

Chris Sampson (biceps) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment by the end of the week.
Sampson threw a side session on Thursday and reported no pain or discomfort in his once-sore throwing arm. The right-hander hit the disabled list on June 1 with a with a 6.30 ERA and a 10/7 K/BB ratio over 20 innings. He's probably about a week from being activated.

Sampson has been dealing with the biceps discomfort for a few weeks, and it's shown in his stat line. The right-hander started the year off strong, but has allowed a total of 12 hits and 11 earned runs in his last three outings. The rest should do everyone some good.
