Sat Dec 4 201010:18Astros hoping to re-sign Gervacio
Astros GM Ed Wade said his team would like to bring back Sammy Gervacio but that they couldn't risk him being stuck on the major league disabled list.
Gervacio was shut down in early May with shoulder issues, and MLB rules state that if he continued to be affected by the injury in spring training and didn't make the team, he would have to be placed on the major league DL and thus earn a major league contract. If Gervacio signs a split minor league contract, he can be kept on the minor league DL, saving the Astros money.
