Phillies designated OF Laynce Nix for assignment.
The move clears a spot for Domonic Brown's return from the 7-day disabled list. Nix joined the Phillies on a two-year, $2.5 million contract prior to the 2012 season, but he has a lousy .211/.270/.331 batting line over 263 plate appearances with the club.

Thu Jul 25 201322:18Laynce Nix goes hitless in loss
Laynce Nix made his second straight start Thursday and went 0-for-4 against the Cardinals.
Because someone has to play the outfield with Ben Revere and Domonic Brown out. More than just being a waste of money, Nix has been a waste of a roster spot for the Phillies this year, hitting .188 with a total of six RBI in 112 at-bats. A less stubborn GM would have released him months ago. Ruben Amaro, though, signed him for two years and, by golly, is going to keep him the whole time.

Thu Mar 28 201316:18Laynce Nix hits three-run homer for Phils
Laynce Nix hit a three-run homer Thursday as part of the Phillies' 7-2 win over the Blue Jays.
Neither John Mayberry Jr. nor the demoted Darin Ruf joined Domonic Brown in stepping up this spring, so it looks like Nix will probably start against most right-handers until Delmon Young returns. Don't expect him to have any long-term fantasy value, but he could make for a decent early stopgap in NL-only leagues.
