Wed Jan 18 2012 | 19:10 | Orlando Cabrera, 37, announces retirement |
According to ESPN's Enrique Rojas, Orlando Cabrera has announced his retirement from baseball. |
O-Cabs struggled to find suitors on the open market this winter after batting just .238/.267/.307 in 477 plate appearances last season between the Indians and Giants. The 37-year-old native of Colombia was a .272/.317/.390 lifetime hitter in over 1,900 major league games. He slugged 123 career home runs and tallied 2,055 career hits. |

Sat Sep 24 2011 | 01:31 | Orlando Cabrera hits first homer for Giants |
Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-4 and hit his first homer as a Giant on Friday. |
Cabrera was hitting just .213/.233/.238 in 122 at-bats for his new team. It seems doubtful that he'll find a starting job this winter, though he could continue his career as a utilityman if he so chooses. |

Fri Aug 19 2011 | 18:34 | Orlando Cabrera out with strained groin |
Orlando Cabrera is out of Friday's lineup against the Astros with a strained groin. |
Ok, it's just getting funny at this point. Miguel Tejada will start in his place at shortstop Friday night and bat sixth against left-hander Wandy Rodriguez. |

Sat Jul 30 2011 | 23:06 | Giants land Orlando Cabrera from Cleveland |
Giants acquired INF Orlando Cabrera from the Indians for OF Thomas Neal. |
Cabrera has not enjoyed his finest offensive season and has lost a step or two defensively, but the Giants were low on quality middle infield depth and GM Brian Sabean loves his veterans. "O-Cabs" is expected to draw regular starts at shortstop and could also play a bit of second base. |

Wed Jun 29 2011 | 18:57 | Orlando Cabrera goes 4-for-6 in victory |
Orlando Cabrera went 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI as the Indians topped the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. |
Cabrera has started two games in a row after hitting a go-ahead homer off the bench in the ninth inning Monday, and he's come through both games. In Tuesday's loss, he doubled, walked and stole a base. If Cabrera is back as the Indians' second baseman, it's bad news for those who picked up Cord Phelps. |

Tue Jun 28 2011 | 01:25 | Orlando Cabrera hits go-ahead homer in win |
Orlando Cabrera hit a go-ahead homer off J.J. Putz in the top of the ninth to help the Indians beat the Diamondbacks 5-4 on Monday. |
Cabrera started all three games in San Francisco over the weekend, going 2-for-10 as the Indians were swept. He came off the bench to deliver the big blow in this one. Given his poor performance, it might be for the best if he keeps coming off the bench going forward. |

Thu Jun 23 2011 | 09:18 | O-Cab starts at hot corner again |
Orlando Cabrera started at third base Wednesday for the second time in three days. |
"I don't even know how I feel about playing third," said Cabrera, who had never played third prior to Monday's game. "I'm not sure how I can put it in words. I did feel a little uncomfortable, of course, because it's a new position." Jack Hannahan is batting just .184 since the start of May, so Indians manager Manny Acta is trying to keep both Cabrera and Cord Phelps in the starting lineup. |

Mon Jun 20 2011 | 14:54 | O-Cabs making first-ever start at 3B |
Orlando Cabrera will make his first career start at third base on Monday night against the Rockies. |
It's also his first-ever appearance at the position. Cord Phelps is playing second base with Asdrubal Cabrera manning shortstop. O-Cabs is batting just .248/.270/.326 this season but has 32 RBI in 63 games. |

Wed Jun 15 2011 | 23:06 | Orlando Cabrera finally has nice night |
Orlando Cabrera went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBI in Cleveland's 6-4 win over the Tigers on Wednesday evening. |
Both the multi-hit and multi-RBI efforts were Cabrera's first of the month. Now splitting time with Cord Phelps at second base while Jason Kipnis continues to produce in the minor leagues, Cabrera may not be long for AL-only league value. |

Wed May 25 2011 | 10:02 | O-Cab not in Wednesday's lineup |
Orlando Cabrera is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's matinee against the Red Sox. |
Cabrera was OK after being hit in the helmet by a breaking ball thrown by Josh Beckett on Tuesday night, so we're assuming he's just getting the day off. Adam Everett will make the start at second base Wednesday and bat ninth against left-hander Jon Lester. |

Orlando Cabrera hit a walkoff RBI single in the 13th inning Saturday as the Indians grabbed a 3-2 win over Detroit. |
Cabrera finished the game 3-for-6 and also played a role in turning two double plays. The Indians' starting second baseman is now batting .283/.308/.374 with two home runs and 16 RBI through 25 games this season. |

Sun Apr 24 2011 | 17:15 | Cabrera picks up two hits in loss |
Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Cleveland's loss to the Twins on Sunday. |
The two-hit day was Cabrera's first in six games, though he has now hit safely in six of his past seven starts. Cabrera still isn't likely to be a long-term option in mixed leagues this season, but it's clear there's still at least a little bit left in his 36-year-old bat. |

Sat Apr 16 2011 | 17:53 | Cabrera homers, drives in four in win |
Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI in an 8-3 win over the Orioles on Saturday. |
Cabrera hadn't driven in four runs in a game since May 12, 2009. The Indians took some criticism for the signing, but the 36-year-old is batting .288 (15-for-52) with two homers and 11 RBI to begin the season. He's worth a look if you're missing Rafael Furcal right now. |

Tue Mar 1 2011 | 19:07 | O-Cab has RBI double in win Tuesday |
Orlando Cabrera delivered an RBI double in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday. |
Cabrera waited around all winter for a starting gig and somehow how found one with the Indians at the last minute, albeit at second base. The 36-year-old batted just .263/.303/.354 with the Reds last season and makes for a poor option in most fantasy leagues. We wouldn't be surprised if he was replaced by prospect second baseman Jason Kipnis before the season is over. |
Tue Feb 22 2011 | 15:46 | O-Cabs misquoted, not planning retirement |
Contrary to a previous report, Orlando Cabrera is not planning to retire after the 2011 season. |
A Colombian newspaper quoted the infielder as saying that he wanted to go out "under his own terms" after his new one-year, $1 million contract with the Indians runs out. But Cabrera told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com in Indians camp Tuesday that he was misquoted. The 36-year-old wants to continue playing for as long as teams are willing to hand him big league contracts. |

Tue Feb 22 2011 | 12:08 | O-Cabs planning to retire after this season |
Orlando Cabrera told a Colombian newspaper that he doesn't intend to play beyond the 2011 season. |
Cabrera inked a one-year, $1 million contract with the Indians this winter and is projected to serve as the club's full-time second baseman. He plans to hang it up after his short tenure in Cleveland. "I've always said my retirement would be under my own terms, and this is a great opportunity for me," said the 36-year-old veteran. "I'm leaving without them telling me, `We don't want to see you anymore around here.'" |

Wed Feb 16 2011 | 13:46 | Indians finalize 1-yr deal with INF Cabrera |
Indians signed INF Orlando Cabrera to a one-year contract. |
No word on the exact terms, but the deal became official after Cabrera passed a physical on Wednesday. The 36-year-old is projected to be a full-time second baseman for the first time in his career due to the presence of Asdrubal Cabrera at shortstop. While this pushes Luis Valbuena into a backup role, Jason Donald will be in the mix to start at third base. |
Tue Feb 15 2011 | 17:41 | Cabrera needs to take physical with Indians |
According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, Orlando Cabrera still needs to pass a physical before his contract with the Indians becomes official. |
He should take the physical in the next few days. With Asdrubal Cabrera firmly entrenched as the shortstop, Cabrera will likely be the regular second baseman for the Tribe this season. The 36-year-old has only played 33 games at the position during his 14-year major league career. |

Thu Feb 10 2011 | 15:38 | Indians sign Orlando Cabrera |
Jordan Bastian of MLB.com confirms that the Indians have agreed to sign Orlando Cabrera. |
No word on the exact terms, but Cabrera is expected to compete for the starting second base job with Jason Donald and Luis Valbuena. It's an odd fit, to say the least. The Indians aren't winning anytime soon and Cabrera is 36 years old and clearly on the decline. Let's just hope this signing doesn't give the Indians a reason to delay Jason Kipnis' arrival to the major leagues. |
