Smith has allowed three runs over two innings of work this spring. The 26-year-old right-hander had a 7.20 ERA over 17 relief appearances at the major league level in 2011 and is likely to open the season with Triple-A Louisville.

Smith has a 3.67 ERA in 34 1/3 innings for the Reds last season, but he struggled before being sent down last month and wasn't very effective after returning to Louisville. He'll probably be a mop-up man for now.
