Ondrusek signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal to play in Japan with the Yakult Swallows, the Japan Times reports.

Ondrusek struggled with a 5.49 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 40 appearances in 2014. At age 29, he could return to MLB if he revives his career overseas.

The Reds declined to tender Ondrusek a contract, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Cincinnati got very little out of the $1.35 million it paid Ondrusek in his first year of arbitration, as he posted a dismal 5.49 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 40 appearances in 2014, making this relatively easy decision. Ondrusek battled shoulder issues throughout the second half, limiting him to just 9.2 innings after the All-Star break.

Ondrusek was pounded for five runs on five hits, including one homer, while retiring just two batters in the Reds' loss to the Brewers on Sunday.

Since returning from the DL in August, Ondrusek has allowed 10 runs over 9.2 innings. His performance has been emblematic of the Reds' struggles in middle relief this season.

Ondrusek gave up two runs in the ninth inning against the Braves on Sunday on two hits, one of which was a homer by Evan Gattis.

The second run was sort of cheesy and a bit unfair to Ondrusek. He allowed an infield hit and was pulled with two outs and a three-run lead. Jonathan Broxton then allowed the baserunner to advance (it was ruled defensive indifference) and then allowed him to score on a single. Arguably Broxton had more to do with the runner scoring than Ondrusek, but those are the rules.

He rejoined the team Saturday, and was activated in advance of the Reds' series this week against St. Louis. He will offer depth out of the big-league bullpen, but doesn't figure to be in line to steal any saves from Aroldis Chapman.

Ondrusek indicated he felt strong after the session, putting him on track to throw an inning in a minor league rehab assignment Friday. If the outing goes well, the Reds would likely activate him from the DL on Saturday, with Ondrusek slotting back into a setup role in the Reds' bullpen.

It was the first bullpen session for Ondrusek since going on the DL on Friday. "He was very impressive," manager Bryan Price said. "I imagine he'll probably throw another bullpen here probably on Friday or Saturday and reassess. He's not so far removed from competition that he'd need an extended rehab or anything like that. We'll have to decide if he needs a rehab outing or two, or not."

Ondrusek has been out for a couple weeks with a strained right shoulder but is obviously feeling better. He should rejoin the Reds' bullpen before long if all goes well.

He was sent down in order to make room for Dioner Navarro on the roster. Ondrusek has a solid 3.50 ERA in 53 appearances this year, but he has allowed five runs over 6 2/3 innings this month. He should return when rosters expand in September.

Logan Ondrusek has been nursing a sore back but was able to appear in Saturday's game.

He recorded one out and walked a batter in the appearance. "He's getting better daily," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We tried to stay away from him (Thursday), which we were able to do. I haven't heard from my trainers. No news is good news."
