RHP Sam LeCure, who had a 7.88 ERA this spring, was released by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. LeCure, 31, went 0-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 19 relief appearances for Cincinnati last year.

LeCure gave up two runs to allow the Brewers to extend their lead Sunday, the first two runs he has allowed since getting called up on August 19.

LeCure was attempting to get through a second clean inning, but instead allowed two extra-base hits to do most of the damage.

LeCure was called up for Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

After making 60-plus appearances in 2013 and 2014, and 40-plus appearances in each of the last four seasons, LeCure failed to make the Reds' roster out of spring training. His velocity was down in camp, and he's struggled to get on track with Louisville, posting a 5.25 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 41 appearances. He figures to work exclusively in low-leverage spots.

LeCure's velocity dropped along with his performance this year, but it was still a bit of a surprise to see. But something had to give with the Reds adding four non-roster players. "The LeCure thing, I never could have seen that coming when we began Spring Training," manager Bryan Price said. "I think it breaks all of our hearts that he's not on this ball club right now. We anticipate him being back. I think we feel he's not at his best where he needs to be to help us right now .... I'm very confident that he will be back with us."

LeCure is among the relievers being considered for the primary set-up role, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

LeCure regressed last year and isn't overpowering, but the team also doesn't have much in the way of established relievers standing out for the job.

LeCure got the loss Saturday night against the Marlins, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while recording two outs.

LeCure hasn't been terrible this year, but he also hasn't been as good as the previous two years. He's putting more balls in play and allowing more hits when they do get in play, and in the process has seen his WHIP spike over 1.47.

The financials of the deal are not yet known. LeCure, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time, has been an underrated reliever the last three seasons for the Reds, posting a 3.21 ERA while striking out over a batter per frame.

The difference in the ballgame was a wild pitch from Eury De La Rosa in the bottom of the eighth inning which allowed Shin-Soo Choo to score from third base.

Six of LeCure's seven holds have come since May 3, as Dusty Baker has grown increasingly more confident in the 29-year-old. LeCure had a 3.14 ERA as a long reliever in the Reds' bullpen last season and owns a sparkling 1.29 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 23/9 K/BB ratio over 21 innings in 2013.

It was likely just a veteran courtesy, as LeCure hasn't started a game in the majors since 2011. Look for him to continue to serve as a long reliever in the Reds' bullpen.

LeCure hasn't pitched in a couple of days because of shoulder soreness, but he is expected to avoid the disabled list. The right-hander has a 3.02 ERA this season.

LeCure was slated to test out the shoulder prior to Wednesday's game, though it's not clear how that went. "He said he feels better. He's going to test it today and see where he is," Reds manager Dusty Baker said of LeCure. Baker did not rule out a disabled list stint for the righty. He could conceivably be replaced by Nick Masset, who appears ready to return soon from a shoulder injury of his own.

LeCure struck out three while earning a save for the Louisville Bats. He has a 1.35 ERA now in four minor league appearances and should be nearing a return from the disabled list. The versatile right-hander has been out since late May with a forearm strain.

LeCure reported feeling better this weekend on his personal Twitter account, but he's had trouble getting loose when called upon and will sit out for a couple of weeks as a precautionary measure. The 27-year-old has posted a 3.18 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 34 innings this season for the Redlegs.

It's possible LeCure, who hasn't pitched since last Sunday, could wind up on the DL, as the pitching-thin Reds can't afford to carry him on their roster right now. Jordan Smith or Daryl Thompson, who was just sent down Saturday, are options to be recalled.

"They told me before the game they would try to stay away from me," said LeCure, who pitched 3 1/3 innings on Sunday. "I knew that, but I tried to get loose later. I don't know if it was a combination that I was still sore or that I was sitting out there for 4 1/2 hours. I felt terrible because Carlos went out there and threw almost 100 pitches. I felt more bad he had to lose the game than anything. I could have gone out there. I wouldn't have looked like my normal self. I wish I could have done something." He should be available again in the next few days.

Sam LeCure will move to the bullpen now that Homer Bailey is set to return from the disabled list.

LeCure was a pleasant surprise in early April, but gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 15 hits over his last two starts. And while Travis Wood has struggled early in the season, his secondary numbers point to better days ahead. It's the right move.
